Arqana €2M Sensation Snags TDN Rising Star In Haydock Debut

Godolphin's Ancient Wisdom (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}–Golden Valentine {Fr}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) turned heads when selling for €2-million at last year's Arqana August fixture, and he was back in the limelight with a highly polished debut display in Friday's GPW Recruitment Carl Foster Memorial EBF Novice S. at Haydock. The well-supported 6-5 favourite hit the line powerfully and finished clear of Under The Sun (GB) (Golden Horn {GB}), attaining 'TDN Rising Star' status in the seven-furlong heat with an impressive five-length triumph.

Ancient Wisdom settled into a comfortable rhythm behind the leaders in fourth after a sharp exit from an outer stall. Bounding forward in the straight to launch his bid on the bridle passing the quarter-mile marker, he quickened in style to settle the contest in a matter of strides approaching the final furlong and surged clear in taking fashion to rout his rivals by daylight. The April-foaled bay took several furlongs to gear down and was halfway along the backstraight before doing so.

Ancient Wisdom, half to a yearling colt by Lope De Vega (Ire), is the third of four reported foals and second scorer produced by G3 Prix Minerve winner Golden Valentine (Fr) (Dalakhani {Ire}), herself one of seven stakes performers out of G3 Prix Cleopatre victrix Gold Round (Ire) (Caerleon). Golden Valentine's siblings include her G3 Prix du Lys-winning full-brother Goldwaki (Ger), GIII Robert J Frankel S. victrix and GI Rodeo Drive S. runner-up Luck (Kitten's Joy) and the dam of G3 Prix Vanteaux winner and GI E P Taylor S. third Platane (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}). Gold Round, in turn, is a half-sister to storied multiple champion and three-time GI Breeders' Cup Mile heroine Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), G1 Prix Vermeille victrix Galikova (Fr) (Galileo {Ire}) and multiple Group 1-placed sire Anodin (Ire) (Anabaa).

Freshman Sire Too Darn Hot Off The Mark At Haydock

Dalham Hall Stud resident Too Darn Hot (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) became Europe's latest first-crop sire to get off the mark when Karl Burke trainee Fallen Angel (GB) (Too Darn Hot {GB}–Agnes Stewart {Ire}, by Lawman {Fr}) made a winning debut going just under seven furlongs in Friday's Oakmere Homes Supporting Macmillan Fillies' Novice S. at Haydock.

Tracking the leaders in third for the most part, the 9-4 favourite was angled into a clear lane approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly once launching her challenge entering the final furlong to assert by 1 3/4 lengths from Lady Of Leisure (GB) (Masar {Ire}).

4th-Haydock, £9,999, Nov, 5-26, 2yo, f, 6f 212yT, 1:29.32, g/f.
FALLEN ANGEL (GB) (f, 2, Too Darn Hot {GB}–Agnes Stewart {Ire} {GSW & G1SP-Eng, GSP-Ire, $176,586}, by Lawman {Fr}) was alert from the gates and stalked the leaders in third for most of this unveiling. Angled into a clear lane approaching the two pole, the 9-4 favourite launched her challenge entering the final furlong and kept on strongly under urging in the closing stages to assert by 1 3/4 lengths from Lady Of Leisure (GB) (Masar {Ire}), becoming the first winner for her freshman sire (by Dubawi {Ire}). “If we were going to go for Royal Ascot it would be the [G3] Albany, but that would mean dropping back [in trip],” explained trainer Karl Burke. “After watching that, and speaking to [jockey] Clifford Lee, I don't think we'll do that as I think she'll stay a mile. I was half hoping she'd show a little bit more speed, but she'll have learnt a lot today. I do think she'll sharpen up, but dropping her back to six [furlongs] might be a mistake. I think that's Too Darn Hot's first winner as a stallion and I've got another couple of fillies by him as well. I think he's going to be a very good sire. She's useful and is certainly going to be up there.” Fallen Angel is the latest of four foals and third scorer produced by G2 May Hill S. victrix and G1 Fillies' Mile runner-up Agnes Stewart (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), herself a half-sister to MGSP Listed River Eden Fillies' S. winner Sorrel (Ire) (Dansili {GB}). The march-foaled homebred grey is a half-sister to Listed Prix Joubert runner-up Divine Jewel (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $6,652.

Zoffany’s Sakheer Impresses With TDN Rising Star Display

KHK Racing's once-raced 2-year-old colt Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}–Shortmile Lady {Ire}, by Arcano {Ire}), who shaped with a deal of promise when posting a debut second going six furlongs at Windsor last month, was a class above his rivals in Thursday's Auction Finance EBF Novice S. over the same trip at Haydock and attained 'TDN Rising Star' status with a mightily impressive display of raw power. Swiftly into stride for an early advantage, the 1-2 favourite was untroubled from halfway and extended clear in hand to easily rout Acai (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) by six lengths. The Roger Varian trainee is engaged in Newbury's Sept. 17 G2 Mill Reef S. and the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket one week later.

“He ran a great race first time out, he picked up and finished well clear of the third,” commented winning rider David Egan. “We wanted him to have a nice debut, he learnt a lot and came from behind. I expected him to take a step forward and, from halfway, I knew he was a class above the rest. It's been a great job by everyone at home to get him here and to get his win. To do it like that was impressive and the feel he gave me was even more impressive. I don't think I've had an easier race, in any sort of race, since I've been riding. He has a big price tag, he's got some big entries coming up and there is a lot more in the tank. Horses like this make our jobs easier, he's a classy individual and very exciting.”

Sakheer, who was the highest-priced lot when knocked down for €550,000 at this year's Arqana Breeze-Up sale, is the fifth of seven foals and third scorer out of a half-sister to G3 Prix de Meautry winner Indian Maiden (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), herself the dam of G3 World Trophy victrix Maid In India (Ire) (Bated Breath {GB}) and the dual stakes-winning G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis runner-up Love Spirit (GB) (Elusive City). The February-foaled bay is a half-brother to multiple Group-winning GI Beverly D. S. third Lemista (Ire) (Raven's Pass), a yearling colt by Exceed And Excel (Aus) and a weanling filly by Sea The Stars (Ire).

Galileo’s Free Wind Overcomes Traffic To Plunder Haydock Feature

George Strawbridge's 4-year-old filly Free Wind (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Alive Alive Oh {GB}, by Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) prevailed in three out of four starts last term and closed her sophomore campaign with a seven-length rout in September's G3 Park Hill S. at Doncaster. She was sent postward as the 11-4 joint-favourite for Saturday's G2 bet365 Lancashire Oaks, her seasonal return, and overcame severe traffic problems in the closing stages of the 12-furlong test to register a career high in taking fashion. The eventual winner settled into a smooth rhythm behind the leading duo in third from flagfall, but was badly hampered and made heavy contact with the far-side rail for several strides when launching her bid soon after passing the quarter-mile marker. Finding a clear passage and returned on an even keel entering the final furlong, she displayed an impressive array of gears to hunt down Sea La Rosa (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) with 100 yards remaining en route to a 2 1/4-length triumph.

“She's done well to pick up again after that,” reflected rider Rab Havlin. “The gap was there and my filly was going well. We just got tight, but credit to the filly as she organised herself and picked up. We always thought she was a proper filly last year and she did it today. She doesn't show a great deal at home and never has, but on the track she's been really progressive and looks like a Group 1 filly. I'd say we'd probably aim her a bit higher than the [G2] Lillie Langtry, that's an obvious race to consider at Goodwood, but I'd imagine connections will want to go for a Group 1.”

There was a sting in the tail for Havlin, who picked up a five-day suspension for being the one deemed to have initiated his own interference. “Sometimes horses will lean off the rail and I thought I gave Jim [Crowley on Eshaada] half a furlong to see if he was going to go back on,” he explained. “The gap was there and my filly was going well, but we just got tight. Normally, if it opens straight away, you would just wait as they can roll on and off the rail. I felt he was off the rail for long enough and his filly looked as if she was leaning into the Haggas filly [Sea La Rose], so I thought I was going to take the opportunity as I was going well. When I got halfway there it got tight.”

Free Wind, full-sister to a yearling colt, is the second of four foals and one of two scorers for MSW G3 Dance Design S. third Alive Alive Oh (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}), herself half to G3 Fukushima Kinen and G3 Tanabata Sho victor Crescendo Love (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}). Alive Alive Oh is also kin to the dam of the dual stakes-placed Soldier's Minute (GB) (Raven's Pass). The April-foaled bay's second dam Higher Love (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), who was runner-up in the Listed Cheshire Oaks, is out of Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial runner-up Dollar Bird (Ire) (Kris {GB}), herself a half-sister to GSW sire Amfortas (Ire) (Caerleon) and to the dam of G1 1000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters (Kingmambo) and G1SP sires Chevalier (Ire) (Danehill) and Alexander of Hales (Danehill).
