Belmont Turf Takes Center Stage Saturday

by Stefanie Grimm & Patrycja Szpyra

With the Fourth of July holiday weekend in the rear-view mirror, the summer turf season kicks into high gear starting with a pair of Grade I's at Belmont Park Saturday. The home team takes on a new wave of European challengers in the 1 1/4-mile GI Caesars Belmont Derby Invitational S., the first leg of the Caesars Turf Triple Series.

Tiz the Bomb (Hit It a Bomb), last seen finishing ninth behind longshot GI Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice), finally gets back to the surface that he's shown plenty of success on previously. Tiz the Bomb scored back-to-back victories on the grass in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile S. Sept. 6 and Keeneland's GII Castle & Key Bourbon S. Oct. 10. He ended his 2-year-old campaign with just a half-length defeat to Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar Nov. 5, his most recent try on grass.

After an unsuccessful 3-year-old debut in the GIII Holy Bull S., Tiz the Bomb returned to form with two wins on the all-weather surface at Turfway Park, taking both the John Battaglia Memorial S. Mar. 5 and GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks S. Apr. 2. He defeated eventual Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice) in the latter.

“We gave him a Kentucky Derby chance,” trainer Ken McPeek said. “He ran respectable, but he's certainly not as good on the dirt as he is on the grass.”

McPeek will also saddle Kentucky Derby 11th Classic Causeway (Giant's Causeway), who will be making his first start on the turf. The GIII Sam F. Davis S. and the GII Tampa Bay Derby winner, previously trained by Brian Lynch, was third in Thistledown's GIII Ohio Derby June 25.

Topping the European contenders is Godolphin homebred Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who, barring his poor effort most recently in the G1 Cazoo Derby at Epsom June 4, previously won four straight, including a seven-length win in the Newmarket S. Apr. 29 over the same 1 1/4-mile distance he'll try Saturday.

Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), drawn wide in post 13, also exits a disappointing showing like his aforementioned rival in the Cazoo Derby. Prior to that, he showed good form in taking the G3 Derby Trial S. at Leopardstown May 8 and also when finishing second in the 2021 G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud.

Also on tap over Belmont's turf course Saturday is the 1 1/4- mile GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S., which features a similar combination of American and European-bred contenders. Chad Brown brings a trio of options starting with 'TDN Rising Star' Haughty (Empire Maker), who ended her juvenile season with only a three-quarter length defeat to Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Nov. 5 at Del Mar.

McKulick (GB) (Frankel {GB}) enters for Brown off a second- place finish in the 1 1/8-mile GIII Regret S. at Churchill Downs June 4. She was also second behind fellow Oaks rival New Year's Eve (Kitten's Joy) in the GII Edgewood S. May 6.

Rounding out Brown's entries is Consumer Spending (More Than Ready), who enters having won four of her last five starts. While no match for Pizza Bianca in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, she began her 3-year-old season with back-to-back wins. She turned the tables on Pizza Bianca in Aqueduct's Memories of Silver S. Apr. 24, then added the GII Wonder Again S. at Belmont June 9.

Hailing from the barn of Aidan O'Brien, Concert Hall (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is listed as the 3-1 morning-line favorite. The 2021 G3 Weld Park S. winner was stretched out in distance as a 3-year-old. Her form this season includes a third-place finish in the G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas May 22, a fourth-place finish in the G1 Cazoo Oaks June 3, and a fifth-place finish in the G1 Pretty Polly S. at Curragh June 26.

Five Line Up for Suburban

The Belmont dirt will showcase older horses going 1 1/4 miles in the GII Suburban S. Shug McGaughey brings in 'TDN Rising Star' First Captain (Curlin), who enters off a career-best performance in the GIII Pimlico Special S. May 20. Dynamic One (Union Rags) is listed as the 7-5 morning-line favorite in the field of five. After getting seven months off following his seventh-place effort in the GI Travers S. Aug. 28, he returned as a 4-year-old with increasingly positive results. He checked in third off the layoff in the GIII Challenger S. at Tampa Mar. 12, was second in the GIII Ben Ali S. Apr. 23, and most recently won the Blame S. June 4 at Churchill. The field also includes defending Suburban champion Max Player (Honor Code).

The Belmont card also includes the GIII Victory Ride S. for 3-year-old fillies. Marylou Whitney Stables's Pretty Birdie (Bird Song) was second in her last two, completing the exacta behind Matareya (Pioneerof the Nile) in the GII Eight Belles S. May 6 and Wicked Halo (Gun Runner) in the Leslie's Lady Overnight S. June 12. The field also includes Happy Soul (Runhappy), second last time in Pimlico's GIII Miss Preakness S. May 20.

Smaller Circuit Graded Stakes Attract Big Names

Horseshoe Indianapolis–formerly Indiana Grand–may've changed its name, but the industry's heavy hitters came with their runners just the same for the GIII Indiana Derby and GIII Indiana Oaks, scheduled to go as the last two races on the card.

In the nightcap contest for the colts, 75-1 longshot GII Rebel S. conqueror Un Ojo (Laoban) returns off a three-month layoff in his first attempt for trainer Robertino Diodoro. Conditioner Kenny McPeek's GISW Rattle N Roll (Connect) is cross-entered here and in the Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows after ending his five-race losing streak last weekend in the July 2 American Derby at Churchill Downs. Texas Derby winner King Ottoman (Curlin), trained by Steve Asmussen, and the Brad Cox-trained Best Actor (Flatter)–a $330,000 KEESEP purchase for Gary and Mary West–round a talented, if lightly raced, field.

The Indiana Oaks is shaping up to be a battle of the trainers as McPeek and Cox send out a pair each. Juddmonte homebred Patna (Into Mischief) and GI Ashland S. third Interstatedaydream (Classic Empire) will fly the flag of the latter. Nine-length maiden winner Silverleaf (Speightster) and the rapidly improving Runaway Wife (Gun Runner) will look to cap a potentially big day for McPeek.

Shifting to Prairie Meadows for the evening, the GIII Prairie Meadows Cornhusker H. attracted the evergreen gelding Rated R Superstar (Kodiak Kowboy), looking to rebound from a pair of disappointing efforts, including in Lone Star's May 30 GIII Steve Sexton Mile S. That race was won by the horse to his inside, the re-opposing Silver Prospector (Declaration of War). Warrant (Constitution), second last out in the GII Brooklyn H. June 11 and second Mar. 5 in the GI Santa Anita H., aims to secure his first win of the season.

A field of eight fillies will do battle for the GIII Iowa Oaks crown, led by the Todd Pletcher-trained Falconet (Uncle Mo) and local Panther S. victress Butterbean (Klimt). Candy Raid (Candy Ride {Arg}), a surprise winner of the Apr. 2 Bourbonette Oaks, is cross-entered in the Indiana Oaks.

Marathon Runners Chime In From Delaware

A big weekend of racing will also be rolling at Delaware Park as a field of 10 lines up to contest the grassy GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial S., featuring over half of the Keertana S. field, including first and second-place finishers Temple City Terror (Temple City) and Stand Tall (Uncle Mo).

The main track filly and mare marathoners will also have their day in the (most likely not present) Delaware sun in the GII Delaware Handicap, with the streaking Serena's Song S. and Obeah S. heroine Miss Leslie (Paynter) leading the charge.

Haughty Dusts Rivals in Penn Oaks

Having been scratched from the GIII Soaring Softly S. last weekend, 'TDN Rising Star' HAUGHTY (f, 3, Empire Maker–Soaring Emotions, by Kingmambo) was re-routed for Friday's $150,000 Penn Oaks at Penn National and may have been a touch ring-rusty, but proved far too classy for her four overmatched rivals. A bit hesitant to load and on edge waiting for the gates to spring, the 2-5 chalk was tugging for her head as they raced under the wire with a circuit of the soft-rated turf course to travel as 60-1 outsider and turf debutante Irie Empress (Shackleford) went along at a snail's pace. Flavien Prat had the favored settled better entering the turn and cut the ribbons approaching the quarter pole, and though she drifted wide into the stretch and took enough time to gather in the front-runner, Haughty never felt the stick and waltzed under the line the handiest of winners. Somewhat controversially disqualified and placed third from an apparent debut victory at Belmont last September, the $70,000 Keeneland September buyback turned $310,000 OBS April breezer earned the 'Rising Star' designation on the strength of a four-length romp at Keeneland the following month. Despite a 16-day turnaround and some uncertainty as to whether she would make the race, Haughty gave an outstanding account of herself in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf when third and beaten three-parts of a length. Siblings and Dams of Friday BC Runners Entered at KEENOV

Nine more supplements have been added to the Keeneland November Sale's Horses of Racing Age portion. The sale begins Wednesday, Nov. 10 with HRA offerings selling on the final day, Nov. 19. Keeneland will continue to accept Book 1 supplements until the auction begins and will accept HRA supplements through mid-November. The latest round of supplements, which include a half-sister to Friday's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf contender Bubble Rock (More Than Ready), are as follo   There's no pedigree update quite like a Breeders' Cup update, and Friday's Stars of Tomorrow card has the potential to provide such a boost to a number of entrants in the upcoming Keeneland November sale. The following is a list of dams and weanling siblings of Friday's Breeders' Cup entrants who will be on offer KEENOV.

Hip 224 – Eight-year-old mare Secret Garden (Per) (Flanders Fields) annexed the 2016 G1 Polla de Potrancas in her native country, but RNA'd for $80,000 at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed Sale. She subsequently visited Nyquist that season, and the resulting filly, bred by Clearsky Farm, eventually sold to West Point Thoroughbreds and trainer Dallas Stewart for $100,000 as a KEESEP yearling.

Now named Sequist (Nyquist), the dark bay won on debut at Colonial Downs in July before finishing fourth in the GI Spinaway S. and rallying for third from far back in Keeneland's GI Darley Alcibiades S. Oct. 8. The confirmed closer will have to have her running shoes on against a few formidable foes in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, but she figures to be finishing late.

Secret Garden, who was supplemented to the November catalog, has a Cairo Prince filly foal and will be offered in foal to in-demand Munnings, whose stud fee was more than doubled for 2022. She hails from the extended female family of Bernardini, et al.

Secret Garden is consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent CLXX.

Hip 235 – This May 10 foal, already named Mad Dash (Candy Ride {Arg}), is a half to Stolen Base (Bodemeister), who flew home from very far back to finish a close second in Keeneland's GII Castle & Key Bourbon S. Stolen Base will be aiming to provide trainer Mike Maker with back-to-back GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf trophies. Stolen Base was a $45,000 OBSAPR grad.

Consigned by Lane's End, hip 235 was bred by Peter Blum Thoroughbreds and W.S. Farish on what appears to be a foal share. A full-sister to the colt brought $50,000 at this year's Keeneland September sale.

Mad Dash and Stolen Base are grandsons of GSW Race Artist (Mr. Prospector), dam of MSW/MGSP Cherokee Artist (Cherokee Run) and SW/GSP Cherokee Girl (Cherokee Run), as well as the dam of a couple of other stakes horses.

Hip 251 – This Mar. 28 foal by Hard Spun is a half-brother to 'TDN Rising Star' Haughty (Empire Maker), who will bid to increase trainer Chad Brown's record winning tally in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf to six. DQ'd from a clear-cut first-out win at Belmont Sept. 17, Haughty was unable to draw in off the also-eligible list for Keeneland's GII JPMorgan Jessamine S., but confirmed her debut outing was no fluke with an easy victory in Lexington Oct. 17. She just narrowly got into the JFT, but the $70,000 KEESEP RNA and $310,000 OBSAPR grad figures to be on plenty of tickets.

Dam Soaring Emotions (Kingmambo) is already responsible for precocious MSW/MGSP Souper Colossal (War Front), and was carrying hip 251 when she sold for $57,000 at last year's November sale. Hidden Brook signed the ticket and John Gardiner is listed as the colt's breeder.

Hip 578 – Bred in Virginia by consignor Morgan's Ford Farm, this Kantharos colt is a half to GI TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance longshot Oviatt Class (Bernardini). A $60,000 KEESEP acquisition himself, Oviatt Class broke through by 4 1/4 lengths over the Del Mar surface Aug. 27 and most recently went last to third in the Oct. 1 GI American Pharoah S. The colts' dam was produced by a half-sister to GSW Tizahit (Tiznow), who in turn was responsible for GISW Come Dancing (Malibu Moon). Her yearling colt by Malibu Moon was puchased for $90,000 at Fasig-Tipton July by Country Life Farm after selling for $62,000 here 12 months ago

Hips 650 & 651Selima S. winner Consumer Spending (More Than Ready) will join aforementioned stablemate Haughty in the Juvenile Fillies Turf starting gate, where she has the potential to provide updates for back-to-back KEENOV entries. The $200,000 FTKSEL yearling's dam Siempre Mia (Scat Daddy) sells as hip 650, while Consumer Spending's full sister sells as hip 651–both with Eaton Sales.

Reiley McDonald's Eaton acted on behalf of Gail and the late James Peyton's Forging Oaks Farm to secure Ellis allowance winner Siempre Mia while she was carrying a first foal by Malibu Moon at the 2017 Keeneland November sale. The daughter of MGSW Shaconage (El Prado {Ire}) had a $120,000 Empire Maker colt sell to Donato Lanni this Keeneland September, and is offered back in foal to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Hip 1707 – Nick Drion Thoroughbreds offers this Upstart half-brother to Prairie Gold Juvenile and Sapling S. runner-up and GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity fourth American Sanctuary (American Freedom), who will look to pull a Storm the Court-type upset in the Juvenile. Bred by Ben and Beck Henley and Sebastien Murat, the Apr. 22 foal is out of now 16-year-old MSP mare Haven's Honey (E Dubai). This is the family of last year's GII San Pasqual S. winner Midcourt (Midnight Lute).

Hip 1801 – Taylor Made Sales Agency consigns this filly from the first crop of GISW Audible (Into Mischief). Former Breeders' Cup chairman Fred W. Hertrich III bred the half-sister to GI Darley Alcibiades S. heroine Juju's Map (Liam's Map), one of the prime contenders for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Hetrich acquired the maiden mare Nagambie (Flatter) for just $14,000 at FTKFEB '16. Her first foal by Gemologist was a minor two-time winner, but her Juju's Map was her second foal. Nagambie's half-sister Fault (Blame) annexed the 2018 GI Santa Margarita S. as part of a three-race graded win streak, and Juju's Map sold for $190,000 as a KEEJAN short yearling and then $300,000 that September.

Hip 3427 – The GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint could have implications back in Book 5 for Party Smart (Smart Strike), who is the dam of Peter Miller-trained Speakeasy S. runner-up Time to Party (Kantharos). The partnership of Gainesway and Bridlewood acquired Party Smart for $35,000 here three years ago with Time to Party in utero and with an eye towards breeding the unraced George Strawbridge, Jr. product back to their young stallion Tapwrit. They sold Time to Party for $12,000 a year later and he subsequently brought $72,000 at OBSWIN before RNA'ing for $45,000 this OBS March. Party Smart, meanwhile, who is a half to GSWs Lucky Lindy (Harlan's Holiday) and Occasional View (Silver Deputy), produced a Tapwrit filly in 2020 and is offered back in foal to the 2017 GI Belmont S. hero.

Haughty Could Provide Big Update for Hidden Brook Consignment

A year ago, the Hidden Brook team was shopping for breeder John Gardiner when it acquired the then-16-year-old mare Soaring Emotions (Kingmambo), in foal to Hard Spun, for $57,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale. The mare's Hard Spun weanling (hip 251) will go through the ring during the second session of this year's Keeneland November sale next Thursday and between now and then the foal's 2-year-old half-sister Haughty (Empire Maker) could provide the colt with a timely update. The filly goes postward in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar Friday.

“We've bought mares like that for him. Mares that have a little bit of age on them that are stakes producers,” Hidden Brook's Dan Hall said of the purchase. “That's kind of what he likes to do.”

Soaring Emotion was already the dam of multiple stakes winner and multiple graded stakes placed Souper Colossal (War Front) when she went through the November ring in 2020.

“Obviously, we didn't know she would be in the Breeders' Cup–I wish we were that smart,” Hall said with a laugh when asked if Haughty was at all on the team's radar last November. “We saw her at the 2-year-old sale [where she sold for $310,000 to Bradley Thoroughbreds at OBS April]. I'd been communicating with Pete Bradley about the filly and they had been high on her all along.”

Haughty appeared to graduate on debut at Belmont Park in September, but was disqualified for interference and placed third. After failing to draw into the field for the GII JPMorgan Chase Jessamine S., she graduated by an emphatic four lengths at Keeneland Oct. 17 and was promptly tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star.' She is 10-1 on the morning-line for the Juvenile Fillies Turf.

“The mare is already a proven graded stakes producer, but honestly having a current Breeders' Cup 2-year-old filly would be a huge boost,” Hall said. “He is a nice foal and we figured we were going to do well with that, but then the filly came along as well.”

Of Haughty's half-brother, Hall said, “He is very nice. Not to knock Hard Spun, but he's prettier than most Hard Spuns. He's a well-balanced colt with good size and a good walk to him. He should sell well.”

The November breeding stock sales come on the heels of an ultra-competitive yearling sales season.

Asked if he expected that type of market to continue for bloodstock, Hall said, “Especially for weanlings, it will still be a strong market. I think the better mares will continue to sell well. The breeding side of it, we will see, I wouldn't necessarily be feeling that it's definitely going to be the same as the yearling market. People seem to be more interested in racing and pinhooking than actually being breeders right now. But that should cycle back, I hope.”

The Keeneland November sale opens with a single-session Book 1 section next Wednesday with bidding beginning at 1 p.m. The auction continues through Nov. 19 with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.
