MG1SW Deirdre In Foal to Wootton Bassett

Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}), who won two races at the highest level, has been pronounced in foal to Coolmore's Wootton Bassett (GB), trainer Mitsuru Hashida has told the Japanese press. The Toji Morita-owned 7-year-old, a half-sister to Japanese listed-placed Odysseus (Jpn) (Falbrav {Ire}), won the G1 Shuka Sho in 2017, as well as the G1 Nassau S. at Goodwood in 2019. She was also runner-up in the 2018 G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup and third in both the G1 Dubai Turf and G1 QIPCO Champion S. while earning north of $5.4 million in 33 starts.

The mare's dam, a half-sister to Japanese group winners Renforcer (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S.), Northern River (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon {Jpn}) and stakes winner Not Alone (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon {Jpn}), is herself a granddaughter of G1 Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Prix du Moulin and G1 Sussex S. victress Sonic Lady (Nureyev), who was named a champion in France in 1986.

Bahrain Likely Swan Song For Deirdre

MG1SW Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) will make what is likely her final start in the £500,000 Bahrain International Trophy on Friday, Nov. 20. The 2019 G1 Nassau S. heroine is the first Japanese horse to campaign in Bahrain. The Toji Morita-owned bay was eighth in the G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 4. Post positions will be drawn for the 14-horse field on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

“Her two Group 1 wins came on right-handed tracks at Kyoto and Goodwood,” said assistant trainer Yoshi Hashida to the Bahrain notes team. “The long straight at Sakhir will suit her. The track looks very fair and we like the firm ground that we will get. We are very excited to take part in the race.

“We’ve seen that Hollie Doyle is one of the best jockeys in Britain this season. Deirdre is now six and she is a very clever horse, we need something fresh to energise her and that is why we feel that Hollie is an ideal jockey for her. We have found that when a female work rider rides her, that suits her better. Mitsuru has said that this will likely be Deirdre’s last race. We are emotional that this journey is almost over.

“We are very excited to be the first Japanese runner in Bahrain. We hope this will be a good start of a good relationship between the two countries. “

Hollie Doyle to Ride Deirdre in Bahrain

Jockey Hollie Doyle has picked up the ride on Group 1 winner Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) in the Nov. 20 £500,000 International Trophy in Bahrain, Racing Post reported. Doyle, who earned her first Group 1 win aboard Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) on British Champions Day last month, has ridden 129 winners through Saturday and will ride Mighty Gurkha (Ire) (Sepoy {Aus}) in the GII Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint on Nov. 6. Deirdre, winner of the G1 Nassau S. in the UK in 2019, was also successful in the 2017 G1 Shuka Sho at the highest level.

“I was delighted to get the call-up to ride Deirdre and had a first sit on her in Newmarket on Saturday morning,” Doyle told Racing Post. “She’s a pretty popular horse in Japan and on her day she’s very good. I’ve never ridden in Bahrain before and it’s great to get the international recognition. The owner, Mr. [Toji] Morita, contacted my agent direct and hopefully this will open other doors. She felt great on Saturday and connections seemed delighted with her, which is the main thing.”
