Partnership Off To Flying Start With No Nay Never Rising Star In France

Craig Bernick and Haras d'Etreham's hitherto untested 2-year-old filly Les Pavots (Ire) (No Nay Never–Sparrow {Ire}, by Oasis Dream {GB}) was hammered down to 5-2 favouritism at the tills for Thursday's €30,000 Prix des Closeaux at Chantilly and returned home with a 'TDN Rising Star' badge after making all for an impressive success in the straight six-furlong newcomers' test. Breaking smartly to seize an immediate lead, she was in command throughout and kept on powerfully under pressure inside the final quarter-mile to easily outclass Freville (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}) by 3 1/2 lengths in taking fashion. Les Pavots becomes the seventh 'TDN Rising Star' for No Nay Never (Scat Daddy) and joins an honour roll which includes Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and Little Big Bear (Ire).

Nicolas de Chambure told TDN Europe that the partnership (Haras D'Etreham and Craig Bernick) had privately purchased three yearling fillies from Coolmore last year, one of which was Les Pavots.

“We do all these deals through Hubie De Burgh and it was a big team effort with Hubie and Craig to buy those fillies from Coolmore,” de Chambure said. “It's the first one of the three to race, and it's a great start to that partnership.”

The other fillies were also by No Nay Never, one out of Believe'N'Succeed (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) making her a half-sister to Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and the other is out of G1 Irish Oaks winner Bracelet (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

“Coolmore breed such brilliant horses, and it was great to be able to buy some of those well-bred fillies with long-term plans,” he added. “The filly out of Believe'N'Succeed is with Fabrice Chappet and the Bracelet filly is with Christophe Ferland.”

Les Pavots is the fifth of six foals and fourth scorer from as many runners produced by G3 Ballyogan S. third Sparrow (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}), herself out of G3 Middleton S. victrix and G1 Oaks second All Too Beautiful (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). All Too Beautiful, in turn, is a daughter of storied matriarch Urban Sea (Miswaki). The March-foaled chestnut is a half-sister to G1 Cox Plate and G1 Tancred S. hero Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), dual stakes-winning G3 Gordon S. and G3 N E Manion Cup placegetter Sir Lucan (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and a yearling colt by Camelot (GB).

French ‘TDN Rising Star’ Bound For Maher and Eustace Barn In Oz

Listed winner, Group 2-placed and 'TDN Rising Star' Lassaut (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}) has been acquired privately by a syndicate led by Ozzie Kheir, and has entered quarantine prior to joining the Ciaron Maher/David Eustace barn Down Under.

“He will arrive here later this month,” Kheir told Racing.com. “He will not be targeted for the Autumn Carnivals at all, he will be aimed for the spring.”

Bred by Haras d'Etreham–which stands his sire who shuttles to New Zealand's Cambridge Stud–and Riviera Equine, SRL, Lassaut raced in their colours for trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. Named a 'Rising Star' at second asking in a Chantilly Polytrack maiden in March of 2022, the colt took an April conditions event at ParisLongchamp, but was only fifth in Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire})'s G1 French 2000 Guineas a month later. Lassaut claimed the Listed Prix Nureyev at Deauville in August two starts later and was a close second in the G2 Prix Niel on Sept. 11, before running unplaced in the G2 Prix Dollar on Arc weekend.

Godolphin’s Quickstep Lives Up To Her Name For Wootton Bassett In Deauville Debut

QUICKSTEP (FR) (f, 2, Wootton Bassett {GB}–Dance Toupie {Fr}, by Dansili {GB}) was well away from the inside stall to race in a handy third after the opening quarter of this debutantes' heat. Making smooth headway on the bridle in the straight and sent with 300 metres remaining, the even-money pick took a slender advantage into the final furlong and kept on powerfully under whipless coaxing in the closing stages to defeat Sunlike (Fr) (De Treville {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths. Quickstep is the seventh of eight foals and sixth scorer from as many runners produced by a half-sister to four black-type performers out of G3 Prix d'Arenberg victrix and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches runner-up Toupie (GB) (Intikhab). The May-foaled dark bay, who joined the Godolphin fold for 350,000gns from the Haras d'Etreham draft at the Tattersalls October Sale Book 2, is a full-sister to G3 Prix Daphnis second Dave (Fr) and a half to GIII Daytona S. third Commander (Fr) (War Command) and a weanling filly by Persian King (Ire). Almanzor and Persian King Head Etreham Roster

Almanzor (Fr), who was recently represented by his first Group 1 winner in Australia, will stand at the reduced fee of €25,000 for 2023. Among his potential top-class 3-year-olds for next season are the Aga Khan's unbeaten Rajapour (Fr), winner of the Listed Prix Isonomy at Deauville last month, and Ecurie Billon's Around Midnight (Fr), who was beaten a short-head for second in the G3 Prix des Reservoirs.

Also commanding a fee of €25,000 for next season is the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains winner Persian King (Ire), who has his first foals on the ground this year. Like Almanzor, his fee has been clipped from €30,000. The son of Kingman (GB) remained in training at four to take the G1 Prix d'Ispahan and G1 Prix du Moulin, and also finished third in the Arc.

His fellow Etreham resident Hello Youmzain (Fr) has also been represented by his first crop of foals this year from a debut book of 128 mares, and the dual Group 1-winning sprinter will stand next season at €22,500, trimmed slightly from €25,000.

Completing the stud's Flat roster is City Light (Fr), a son of French champion sire Siyouni (Fr) who will have his first runners on the track next year. His fee has remained at €7,000.

“I would like to take the opportunity of this announcement to thank breeders once again for their loyalty and continuing support in 2022,” said Haras d'Etreham's Nicolas de Chambure. 

“With the aim of optimising the value of the investment of breeders who place their trust in us and support our stallions, we reaffirm our conviction to limit each of our sires to 140 mares per year. This limit ensures a certain rarity appeal and guarantees value for their progeny.”

The fees for Haras d'Etreham's National Hunt stallions will be announced soon.
