Zelzal’s Zelda A Stakes First For Her Freshman Sire at Chantilly

Jean-Claude Rouget trainee Zelda (Fr) (Zaelzal {Fr}) became the first black-type winner for her Haras de Bouquetot-based freshman sire (by Sea the Stars {Ire}) with a pillar-to-post victory by two lengths in Saturday's Listed Prix Saraca at Chantilly.

Zelda bagged a July 9 debut score going six furlongs in a Saint-Cloud newcomers' heat and doubled up over seven in an Aug. 4 conditions heat at Clairefontaine, but finished last of six tackling the latter trip in ParisLongchamp's Sept. 5 G3 Prix La Rochette last time. Breaking sharply from the outside gate to seize an immediate lead, she held sway throughout and maintained a high tempo under late urging to collect a first black-type rosette in ultimately comfortable fashion.

“She didn't appreciate the seven-furlong track at Longchamp last time and travelled the whole way on the wrong lead,” explained Jean-Bernard Roth, assistant to Jean-Claude Rouget. “The more her jockey tried to get her to relax, the more she contracted herself and never took a breath. She has put that behind her in very good style today. She remains a very nice prospect for next year and she is done for this season.”

Zelda is the latest of four foals and one of three scorers from as many runners out of a half-sister to three stakes performers headed by GIII Buena Vista H. victrix Uraib (Ire) (Mark of Esteem {Ire}). Her dam Hortensia (Ity) (Orpen) is also a half-sister to the dam of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile-winning sire Vale of York (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Zelda's third dam Steel Habit (Ire) (Habitat) produced G2 Prince of Wales's S.-winning sire Batshoof (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and Listed Hong Kong Derby winner Sound Print (Ire) (Be My Guest). Descendants of her G3 Cherry Hinton S.-winning fourth dam Ampulla (Crowned Prince), herself a half-sister to G1 Phoenix S. heroine Smokey Lady (Ire) (Habitat), include G1 2000 Guineas-winning sire King of Kings (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).

Ectot’s Good Too A New Rising Star at Deauville

Following on from a flurry of Rising Star awards in Ireland and Stateside overnight, Al Shaqab Racing's 2-year-old colt Good Too (Fr) (Ectot {GB}) joined the esteemed ranks with an impressive performance in Sunday's Prix de Montaigu at Deauville. Steadied off the pace in fifth after a sharp getaway in this one-mile newcomers' test, the 17-10 favourite made eyecatching headway on the bridle in the straight to challenge out wide with 300 metres remaining and displayed an impressive turn of foot once taking control at the furlong marker to easily outclass Yoozuna (Ire) (Kizuna {Jpn}) by 2 1/2 lengths in taking fashion, becoming the second winner for his freshman sire (by Hurricane Run {Ire}).

“We've been thinking, for quite some time, that this is a very nice horse,” said trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. “He had been working extremely well and he won that very nicely indeed. I feel he has great potential and, as I usually do, he will be lightly raced this year. He may have one or two more starts this year to give him some additional experience.”

Good Too, a half-brother to Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles runner-up Nunzia (Fr) (Epaulette {Aus}), is the second of two foals produced by Netsuke (Ire) (Aragorn {Ire}), herself a dual-winning full-sister to G2 Duque de Caxias victrix and G1 Organizacao Sulamericana de Fomento ao Puro Sangue de Corrida runner-up Notting Tomorrow. Notting Tomorrow, in turn, is the dam of G1 Matias Machline hero Jackson Pollock (Brz) (Kodiak Cowboy). The April-foaled bay's second dam is MGSW GI John C. Mabee H. and G1 Grande Premio Linneo de Paula Machado placegetter Notting Hill (Brz) (Jules), herself kin to G3 Grande Premio Adhemar de Faria e Roberto Gabizo de Faria victor Prince of Wales (Brz) (Ghadeer {Fr}) and Listed Octavio du Pont winner L'Escapade (Brz) (Aksar). The latter has four black-type winners to her credit, headed by G3 Grande Premio Prefeitura da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro victor and G1 Gran Premio Latinoamericano runner-up Leao de Prata (Brz) (Crimson Tide {Ire}).

Bouquetot’s Zelzal Off The Mark

Haras de Bouquetot's first-season sire Zelzal (Fr) (by Sea the Stars {Ire}) had his first winner at Le Mans on Monday as the Ludovic Gadbin-trained filly Blushing (Fr) dominated the finish of the 5 1/2-furlong Prix Mont Blanc. Always travelling comfortably close to the pace set by Marrante (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the 6-1 shot powered by that rival with 100 metres remaining en route to a four-length success. This was an impressive beginning for the G1 Prix Jean Prat-winning freshman, who stands for a fee of €6,000. The dam, who also has a yearling full-brother to the winner, is a daughter of the G3 Prix des Reservoirs scorer Good Example (Fr) (Crystal Glitters) who produced the GI Lane's End Breeders' Futurity-winning sire Consolidator (Storm Cat). Among her descendants is the talented Gentlemen's Bet (Half Ours) who was third in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint and GI Alfred G. Vanderbilt H.
