Happy Romance Eyeing The Duke Of York S.

Fresh off running second in the Mar. 26 G1 Al Quoz Sprint over the Meydan turf in Dubai, Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire})'s connections are considering a start in the G2 Duke Of York S. on May 11 for the 4-year-old filly. The McMurray Family colourbearer won the G3 Hackwood S. last July and ran fourth in the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup S. on Sept. 4. She tired to 11th in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. on Oct. 16 and was third in the G3 1351 Turf Sprint in Saudi Arabia on Feb. 26.

“Happy Romance ran a lovely race in Dubai. I was very happy,” said trainer Richard Hannon. “It was just a shame she was not drawn closer to the rail, as it seemed they had a bit of an advantage over there, but we were delighted with her.

“I put her in the Duke of York the other day, but I have put her in the two races at Ascot, the five and the six [G1 King's Stand S. and G1 Platinum Jubilee S.], and we will work back from there, really.

“She will have a run beforehand, there is that one at York perhaps–there are options–but she will have a little break now and keep her ticking over.”

Group winner Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) has exited his victory in the Listed Doncaster Mile in good order. Hannon is mulling either the G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury on May 14 or the G3 bet365 Mile on Apr. 22 for the 4-year-old colt.

He added “Chindit has options. There is the Lockinge or that race at Sandown [the Group Two bet365 Mile] as well, so that is probably the next stop–one of those two, probably.

“I don't want to run him on soft ground, though.”

Al Quoz Next For Happy Romance

The McMurray Family's Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), who ran third in the 1400-metre G3 1351 Turf Sprint in Riyadh on Feb. 26, is pointing to the 1200-metre G1 Al Quoz Sprint on Mar. 26, according to trainer Richard Hannon. A winner of the G3 Hackwood S. last July, the bay filly ran fourth in the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup S. on Sept. 4 and tired to 11th in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. on Oct. 16.

Hannon said, “Happy Romance ran a blinder in Riyadh. She has come back and is in good form and she will go for the Al Quoz.

“I don't really know what the plan is after that. We'll get her back and plot races from there. We'll see how she gets on in Dubai and once she is right, we'll look for the next one.

“I always thought she would get seven furlongs. She is extremely capable over both six and seven furlongs and that will give her plenty of options again this season. She is a smashing filly.”

Group 1 Winner Starman One of 14 in Sprint Cup

Haydock hosts the G1 Betfair Sprint Cup S. on Sept. 4, and Group 1 winner Starman (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) is one of 14 signed on in the six-furlong affair. A winner of the G1 Darley July Cup S. ahead of Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) on July 10, the David Ward colourbearer ran third, one better than Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in the G1 LARC Prix Maurice de Gheest to Marianafoot (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) at Deauville on Aug. 8 for trainer Ed Walker.

Fellow Group 1 winner Glen Shiel (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) is also in the lineup. Successful in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. last autumn, the Hambleton Racing Xxxvi & Partner-owned 7-year-old gelding's best performance this season has been a second in the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot in June, one better than King Power Racing's Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) for Tim Easterby. Another entrant in the King Power colours is G3 Chipchase S. heroine Chil Chil (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}), who was fifth in the G1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe S.

Godolphin fields G3 Jersey S. hero and G2 Unibet Lennox S. second Creative Force (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). Nunthorpe runner-up Emaraaty Ana (GB) (Shamardal) is also entered for Kevin Ryan. A trio of last out group winners are also in the field at this stage-Gustavus Weston (Ire) (Equiano {Fr}) for Joseph Murphy, Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) for Richard Hannon, and Sunday's G3 Prix de Meautry hero Garrus (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) for Charlie Hills.

Clive Cox has a pair stepping out in the Sprint Cup-2020's G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. hero Supremacy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) and group winner and dual Group 1-placed Nando Parrado (GB) (Kodiac {GB}).

“The drier autumn has given us a chance to include Supremacy, while Nando Parrado ran a blinder at Newbury in the Hungerford and this is an opportunity to run back over six,” said trainer Clive Cox.

“Supremacy is showing me the right signs and with the dry forecast we're keen to have a look. We'll assess the situation as the week goes by.”

Rounding out the 14 are Aug. 28 listed winner Summerghand (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) for David O'Meara and Vadream (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}) from the yard of Charlie Fellowes.

Chindit in Good Nick, Guineas Next

Sunday's G3 Watership Down Too Darn Hot Greenham S. hero Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) has emerged from his Newbury effort in good form and will contest the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas, trainer Richard Hannon has revealed. A winner of the Listed Pat Eddery S. on July 25 and G2 Champagne S. in September, the bay was ninth in the G1 Dewhurst S. at Newmarket in his 2-year-old finale.

“Chindit came out of the race brilliantly, he was in the pen most of the next day and has cantered this morning and he's fine,” said Hannon on Tuesday.

“His form is solid and it looks like he's going to be suited by the test of the Guineas. To me it looked as if he was crying out for a mile.”

His twice-raced stablemate Snow Lantern (GB) (Frankel {GB}) graduated impressively on the Newbury card and earned 'TDN Rising Star' status, but she will not contest the G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas.

Hannon said on his website, “Following a discussion with connections, Snow Lantern will not be taking up her engagement in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket and will instead be aimed for either the G3 Musidora S. or the Listed Michael Seeley S. at York's May meeting.

“With the Michael Seeley being run over a mile and the Musidora over a mile and a quarter, both of these races will give us options and gives her an extra couple of weeks.

“Either race will give us a good guide on where we stand for the rest of the season with her too. She holds entries in the Epsom Oaks and Prix de Diane, and these engagements will be dependant on her York performance.

“There are plenty of options coming up for her. She is a special filly, with a beautiful pedigree and has already proved an exciting prospect for her owner-breeders, Rockcliffe Stud.”

Happy Romance (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}), successful in the G3 Dick Poole Fillies' S., will be kept at sprint distances after running 10th in the G3 Fred Darling S.

“She just didn't stay, so we'll go sprinting,” said Hannon. “I must admit I thought she was sure to stay, but she clearly didn't.

“I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong, it happens often enough. There are still plenty of races she can go for and she's already won a Super Sprint, a Group 3 and a sales race at York already and the owners have had a ball. There are many good days left in her yet.”
