Mozu Akabosu Going For Two Straight at Tokyo

AIR ANEMOI (c, 4, Point of Entry–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) broke his maiden on debut over this course and distance in December 2021 (video, SC 9) and went missing after finishing down the field in Group 3 company early last season. The homebred is one of five winners from five to race from his ultra-productive dam, who also boasts GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), SW Air Fanditha (Hat Trick {Jpn}), three-time winner Air Sage (Point of Entry) and the promising 3-year-old colt Air Meteora (Goldencents). KISS ON THE CHEEK (JPN) (f, 3, Curlin–Eskimo Kisses, by To Honor and Serve), whose GI Alabama S.-winning dam was sold to Shadai Farm for $2.3 million with this filly in utero at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale, got her career off on a high note with a two-length victory in a nine-furlong newcomers' event at Chukyo Jan. 15 (video, SC 4). Eskimo Kisses, who was also second in the GI Central Bank Ashland S. and GII Fair Grounds Oaks in 2018, is a granddaughter of GI Kentucky Derby heroine Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}). MOZU AKABOSU (c, 3, Quality Road–India, by Hennessy), a half-brother to connections' February S. and G1 Yasuda Kinen winner Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}), broke his maiden at first asking going this distance at Chukyo Jan. 28 (video, SC 5) and was given an entry for Sunday's Listed Hyacinth S., but opts for this one-win allowance test. A $200,000 Keeneland September purchase, Mozu Akabosu is out of a half-sister to the dam of MGISW To Honor and Serve (Bernardini) and GISW Angela Renee (Bernardini). 5th-TOK, ¥11,850,000, Newcomers, 3yo, 1600m
GIUOCO PIANO (c, 3, Justify–Haddie Be Good, by Silver Deputy), a $400,000 OBS March acquisition by Katsumi Yoshida, is the latest foal to make the races out of a two-time stakes-winning dam who has already accounted for SW Story To Tell (Bluegrass Cat) and was bought back on a bid of $290,000 with this colt in utero at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The Feb. 17 foal, whose female family also includes GI La Brea S. winner Sam's Sister (Brother Derek), will carry the silks of Kazumi Yoshida and is to be ridden by the visiting Theo Bachelot. Champion Do Deuce Punches Ticket to Dubai

Despite running a forgettable 19th when last seen in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe last October, last season's G1 Japanese Derby scorer Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) launched the 2023 season the right way, coming from far off the pace to take Sunday's G2 Kyoto Kinen at Hanshin. Named Japan's 2021 juvenile champion following an undefeated season that included a victory in Hanshin's G1 Futurity S., the 4-year-old is expected to make his next start in the G1 Dubai Turf at Meydan Mar. 25.

Unhurried near the back early, the bay gradually closed the gap from his outside perch through the opening mile, began to narrow the gap on front-running Pradaria (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) rounding the final turn and blew by that rival midstretch en route to a geared-down 3 1/2-length victory over Mantenro Leo (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}). Japanese Horse of the Year Efforia (Jpn) (Epiphaneia {Jpn}) was pulled up and was later determined to have suffered from atrial fibrillation.

Pedigree Notes:
A winner of six starts, including the GII Gallant Bloom H. and GIII Sugar Swirl S. and runner up in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, Dust and Diamonds realized $1 million when offered at the 2016 Keeneland November sale after producing black-type performer Much Better (Pioneerof the Nile) earlier that season. In Japan, she dropped full-brother named Fulleren (Jpn), an earner of $699,654, before producing a 2018 Deep Impact colt of modest success. A May foal in 2019, Do Deuce is the sole black-type winner for his dam.

Justify Colt Yuttitham Posts Another Impressive Win at Hanshin

6th-Hanshin, ¥14,250,000 ($106,284), Allowance, 2yo, 1800m, 1:53.9, ft.
YUTTITHAM (JPN) (c, 2, Justify–Zipessa {GISW, $783,550}, by City Zip) improved for a debut second at Sapporo Aug. 27 to graduate by eight lengths when last seen over this course and distance Dec. 3 and was a warm item to put them back-to-back in this seasonal finale. Beaten for speed, the flashy chestnut was content to punch the breeze three wide and was poised to strike from the position as they neared the straight. Asked for his best by premiership-winning jockey Yuga Kawada with a furlong and a half to run, Yuttitham opened up with fluid strides and went on to score by three lengths as the 1-2 chalk. Upset winner of the 2017 GI First Lady S. at Keeneland for Empyrean Stables and trainer Michael Stidham, Zipessa was hammered down to Shadai for $1.25 million at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale and was bred to this Triple Crown winner before heading to Japan.  The investment was immediately recouped when Makoto Kaneko–in whose silks the legendary Deep Impact (Jpn) was campaigned–paid ¥200 million for the colt at last year's JRHA Select Sales. Yuttitham has a yearling half-brother by Isla Bonita (Jpn) that fetched ¥76 million ($558,835) at this year's Select Sale and a weanling half-sister by Deep Impact's son Kizuna (Jpn). The late January foal is out of a multiple stakes-placed daughter of MSW & MGSP Coolwind (Forest Wildcat), also the dam of GIII Iowa Derby winner Looking Cool (Candy Ride {Arg}). YUTTITHAM (JPN) (c, 2, Justify–Zipessa, by City Zip) cost connections ¥220 million as a yearling at last year's JRHA Select Sale and the chestnut made a small, but not insignificant repayment on that investment with a smart eight-length romp in his second trip to the races over course and distance Dec. 3 (video, SC 1). Shadai Farm acquired the colt's GSW & MGISP dam for $1.25 million at KEENOV in 2018 and put her in foal to the Triple Crown winner before being exported. Yuttitham is the 1-2 favorite overnight and has the services of champion jockey Yuga Kawada. B-Shadai Farm
