More Than Ready Represented By First Japanese Stakes Winner

Jean Gros (More Than Ready) became the 214th worldwide black-type winner–and first in Japan–for his legendary sire with a spectacular performance in Sunday's $333,992 Listed Marguerite S. at Hanshin Racecourse.

The 6-5 favorite was away alertly, but was checked hard off heels prior to the entry to the turn, perhaps having caused his own problems. The full-brother to Tom's Ready, MGSW & GISP, $1,036,267, soon recovered from that bit of trouble and traveled strongly on the turn before easing off heels and into the four path on the swing for home. The dark bay swooped in front with about a furlong to race and edged clear to score by a widening 1 1/2 lengths with ears pricked (see below, SC 7). The final time of 1:08 flat was about 0.2 seconds faster than the six-furlong split in the 1400-meter G3 Hankyu Hai for older horses in the following race. Jean Gros is one of 18 winners from 20 to race in Japan for the now 25-year-old More Than Ready.

“He has tremendous speed and was very easy to ride today. He is a very talented colt,” commented winning jockey Yutaka Take.

A $130,000 buyback out of the 2020 Keeneland September sale, Jean Gros was knocked down to this trainer for $265,000 at OBS March the following spring after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat.

Barren to Arrogate for 2020, Goodbye Stranger foaled an Audible filly last March and was bred back to Horse of the Year Authentic.

HE SAID SHE SAID (f, 3, Blame–Divine Escapade, by Madcap Escapade) was acquired by Sun Valley Farm for $52K in utero at Keeneland November in 2018 and was hammered down to Paca Paca Farm on behalf of Godolphin for $55K at KEENOV 12 months later. A half-sister to SW King Of the Court (Speightstown), the January foal is out of a daughter of GI Ashland S. heroine Madcap Escapade (Hennessy), whose own GI Darley Debutante S.-winning daughter Mi Sueno (Pulpit) is the dam of Japanese Group 3 winner Mi Suerte (Jpn) (Frankel {GB}). Madcap Escapade is a half-sister to Dubai Escapade (Awesome Again), a $2-million Barretts March juvenile who carried the Darley maroon-and-white to a romping victory in the 2006 GI Ballerina Breeders' Cup S. BEAT EMOTION (c, 3, Quality Road–J. Quirk, by Unbridled's Song) was hammered into 3-5 favoritism for his seven-furlong debut at Tokyo Feb. 12, but could not quite overcome the widest post and settled for a close runner-up effort (see below, SC 16). A half-brother to last year's GIII Remington Park Oaks winner Lady Mystify (Bernardini), the gray made $190K at KEESEP in 2020 and improved into a $600K Fasig-Tipton Florida breezer. A $150K Keeneland September purchase by the Maeda family's North Hills, the bay–who celebrates her calendar birthday Saturday–is out of the 2016 G1 Cheveley Park Stud S. heroine Brave Anna, one of two $3-million purchases by Masahiro Miki at Fasig-Tipton November last fall when offered in foal to Quality Road. Quirk, by Unbridled's Song), a half-brother to 2021 GIII Remington Park Oaks victress Lady Mystify (Bernardnini), fetched $190K at KEESEP in 2021 and was resold to prominent owner Yuji Hasegawa for $600K at FTFMAR last year after breezing a furlong in :10 2/5 (see below). The colt's third dam is Cee's Song (Seattle Song), whose produce include Horse of the Year/MGISW Tiznow, MGSW & MGISP Budroyale and GSW Tizdubai. J. AIR SAGE (c, 4, Point of Entry–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) won three of his first four starts at three, including a tough front-running score in a 13-furlong allowance at Sapporo in August (see below, SC 4) that led to a respectable eighth in the G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) in October. The half-brother to GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior) was produced by a half-sister to the dam of GSP Yuugiri (Shackleford), who is gearing up for her sophomore debut in the near future. Sunday's Boxing Day program at Nakayama features the world's biggest betting race annually, the G1 Arima Kinen, in which Chrono Genesis (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) will look close her career on a winning note in defense of her title:

DREAM AGENDA (f, 2, Curlin–Gender Agenda {GB}, by Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was sent off the 8-5 favorite for her Sept. 18 bow over a sloppy local course and distance and gave a strong account of herself with a runner-up effort. A $200K buyback at Keeneland September last fall, the bay is the first foal from her Grade III-winning dam, herself a half-sister to the dam of champion and G1SW Pretty Pollyanna (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). The third dam includes European Horse of the Year User Friendly (GB) (Slip Anchor {GB}). Gender Agenda was sold on for $55K in foal to More Than Ready at KEENOV last month. FREUD SENSE (c, 2, Street Sense–Fenwick Hall, by Freud) made light work of his debut assignment Dec. 5, easily accounting for a field of newcomers over this track and trip by five lengths as the 9-10 chalk (see below, SC 7) and figures tough right back. A $110K KEESEP RNA last year, the New York-bred, produced by a stakes-placed full-sister to MSW Miss Narcissist, fetched $160K at this year's OBS March Sale. B-Final Furlong Racing Stable (NY)

 

 

9th-HSN, ¥19,110,000 ($167k), Allowance, 2yo, 1400mT
SEA VIXEN (f, 2, Into Mischief–Sly Warrior, by First Samurai) placed twice from three starts on the turf to begin her career, but most recently switched to the dirt and galloped to a seven-length graduation at Tokyo Nov. 28 (see below, SC 2). That success notwithstanding, the $130K KEESEP yearling turned $500K OBSMAR breezer gets back on the grass this weekend. In addition to the ability she has already demonstrated, she has some pedigree for it, as her is a half-sister to SP Pull Dancer (Alywow), whose son Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday) was a two-time graded winner on dirt, but also took the GII Summer S. on the turf. GONE QUEST (c, 2, Quality Road–Gone Callin, by Proud Citizen) is out of an unraced half-sister to champion Caledonia Road (Quality Road), who was purchased by Nathan McCauley for $55K at KEEJAN in 2018. Put in foal to the Lane's End star, Gone Callin was reoffered at KEENOV that fall, hammering for $280K. The mare's first foal, Gone Quest was RNA'd for $225K at KEESEP last fall and again for $145K at FTKOCT. Caledonia Road, whose half-brother Officiating (Blame) recently took out the GIII Mr. Prospector S., also resides in Japan, where her filly foal by Justify fetched $1.22m at this year's JRHA Select Sale.
