Rivara Shocks Fantasy S.

Rivara (Jpn) (Kinshasa no Kiseki {Aus}) surprised her 11 rivals in the G3 KBS Kyoto Sho Fantasy S. when she parlayed her 69-1 odds into a 1 1/4-length victory at Hanshin on Saturday.

In charge from the bell, she doled out splits of :22.90 for the first quarter and rolled through a half-mile in :46.30. Still under only mild pressure from Ballerina (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}), she turned into the home straight with her ears pricked. Sent hard by Shu Ishibashi at that point, she stole a march on her rivals and had built up enough cushion to withstand the surging 5-2 second choice Bouton d'Or (Jpn) (Big Arthur {Jpn}) and Red Hill Shoes (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) who appeared from out of the clouds with their rallies. A length separated the chasing pair.

Third at first asking in a Fukushima newcomers' heat in July, Rivara rebounded to win a Niigata maiden over 1200 metres on Aug. 14. The Fantasy was her first attempt at 1400 metres.

Pedigree Notes

Rivara's G3 Fantasy S. triumph makes her the 12th stakes winner and seventh group winner for Japanese Champion Sprinter/Miler Kinshasa No Kiseki. The winner of the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen in 2010 and 2011, the 19-year-old's best progeny are the G2 Hanshin Cup hero Shuji (Jpn) and group winners and Group 1-placed duo of Monde Can Know (Jpn) and Galore Creek (Jpn).

Out of the Brazilian Group 3 heroine Indriya who was also Group 1-placed there, Rivara is the second foal, runner and winner for her dam. She is followed by a Cheval Grand (Jpn) yearling colt already named Good Vibes (Jpn) and an Epoca d'Oro (Jpn) weanling filly. Indriya's Kitten's Joy half-sister Khaleesi (Brz) played the bridesmaid in the G1 Grand Premio Immensity, while two other half-siblings were also stakes placed in Brazil.

Seven-Figure Into Mischief Colt Kicks Off at Hanshin

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this Sunday entered to run on Tenno Sho day at Tokyo and at Hanshin Racecourse:

Sunday, October 30, 2022
4th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($91k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
META MAX (c, 2, Into Mischief–Zapara, by Not For Love) was purchased by Eddie Woods's Quarter Pole Enterprises for $180,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale and was one of four seven-figure sellers at this year's OBS March Sale, hammering to trainer Hideyuki Mori for $1.1 million after breezing an eighth of a mile in :9 4/5. A half-brother to the stakes-placed Basso (Cairo Prince), Meta Max is out of a half-sister to GSW Seeking Daylight (Seeking the Gold), GISW Hedonist (Alydeed) and SW Zaha (Kingmambo). B-Brookstone Farm & Lee Mauberret (KY)

4th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($91k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600m
PARAIBA TOURMALINE (f, 2, Malibu Moon–Private Jet, by Smart Strike) was led out unsold at last year's Keeneland September sale on a bid of $70,000 and made that decision look shrewd when fetching $450,000 from Katsumi Yoshida at OBS March (:9 4/5). The Mar. 1 foal is out of a full-sister to dual Eclipse Award winner and Coolmore stallion Lookin At Lucky and a half-sister to MGSW Kensei (Mr. Greeley) and MGSW 'TDN Rising Star' Shahama (Munnings). This is also the family of champion Wait a While (Maria's Mon). B-Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings (KY)

6th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($91k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
MALEFICENT LOVE (f, 2, Arrogate–Highway Mary, by U S Ranger), a half-sister to Grade I-winning turf miler Hit The Road (More Than Ready), is out of an unraced daughter of GII E.P. Taylor S. winner Wandering Star (Red Ransom), also the dam of G1SW War Command (War Front) and GSW Naval Officer (Tale of the Cat). Maleficent Love was a $110,000 KEESEP buyback last fall. Also debuting is Godolphin homebred CACCIUCCO (f, 2, Nyquist–Livorno, by Bernardini), the first foal out of a half-sister to SW & GISP Arethusa (A.P. Indy) and to the dam of this year's GIII Prairie Meadows Cornhusker H. runner-up Fleetridge (Ghostzapper). B-Fred W Hertrich III (KY)

Classy Lotus Land Resumes In Japan

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. The weekend's racing is highlighted by a high-class renewal of the G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn) at Toyko, and with plenty of U.S.-bred activity, here are the horses of interest for Saturday running at Tokyo and Hanshin Racecourses. Sunday's runners of note will appear in Saturday's TDN:

Saturday, October 29, 2022
1st-TOK, ¥9,900,000 ($68k), Maiden, 2yo, 1600m
MODERNIZE QUEEN (f, 2, Distorted Humor–Never Grow Old, by Scat Daddy), a $180,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase, is the first foal to the races for her dam, sold for $100,000 in foal to California Chrome at Keeneland November in 2018. Never Grow Old is a winning daughter of Chilean Group 1 winner Noches de Rosa (Chi) (Stagecraft {GB}), who defeated fan favorite Megahertz (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in the 2004 GI Gamely Breeders' Cup H. when trained by Richard Mandella for Gerald Ford's Diamond A Racing Corp. Breeders' Cup-winning jockey Yuga Kawada takes the ride on the chestnut, whose lone start resulted in distant fourth-place effort over nine furlongs at Niigata Aug. 7. B-Grantley Acres (KY)

11th-HSN, Swan S.-G2, ¥113m ($772k), 3yo/up, 1400mT
LOTUS LAND (m, 5, Point of Entry–Little Miss Muffet, by Freud) kicks off her autumn preparation in this spot which connections could use as a springboard to loftier targets at home and/or abroad. Victorious in six of her 15 lifetime appearances, the bay was a winner in Group 3 company last season over a mile and has proven her versatility this season with success in the G3 Kyoto Himba S. (video, SC 7) in February at this intermediate trip ahead of a fast-closing second in the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen (1200m) (video, SC 9). She was last seen finishing 10th, but not beaten far, in the G1 Yasuda Kinen back over a mile in June and holds entries for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Mile and G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint in December. A start in next month's G1 Mile Championship could also be on the cards. B-Dr Aaron Sones & Dr Naoya Yoshida (KY)

Pair Can Add To Deep Impact’s Kikuka Sho Grab

With the winners of the first two legs of the Japanese Triple Crown–G1 Satsuki Sho hero Geoglyph (Jpn) (Drefong) and G1 Tokyo Yushun victor Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn})–targeting upcoming spots versus open rivals, Sunday's G1 Kikuka Sho (Japanese St Leger) looms a competitive affair, with a pair of colts from the penultimate crop of the last Deep Impact (Jpn)–who completed his own Triple Crown here in 2005–looming especially large. Deep Impact is already the sire of four Kikuka Sho winners.

Justin Palace (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) was Group 1-placed over 10 furlongs as a juvenile, but did not make a serious impact in the first two legs of the Triple Crown, finishing ninth in the Guineas and in the Derby. Given a four-month break, the half-brother to the GI Belmont S. hero Palace Malice (Curlin) made a smashing return to action in the G2 Kobe Shimbun Hai Sept. 25, defeating Yaminin Zest (Jpn) (Symboli Kris S) by a resounding 3 1/2 lengths, with Boldog Hos (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) another half-length back in third.

“They did a good job with him at the farm before the Kobe Shimbun Hai,” said trainer Haruki Sugiyama, who will also saddle the well-fancied Gaia Force (Jpn), a son of 2015 Kikuka Sho hero Kitasan Black (Jpn). “The jockey also had some good contact with the horse before the race. In his last run, he easily got into a good position, and getting a good start does seem to be one of the keys with him.”

A ¥190 million (about $1.77 million) purchase out of the 2020 JRHA Select Yearling Sale, Justin Palace will need to be on his best gate behaviour from barrier 17.

Gaia Force is one of the fresh faces in the Kikuka Sho and is drawn at the other end of the stalls. Narrowly second to the Derby winner on debut last September, the gray has since won three of his last four, a track record-setting conditions success at Kokura (2000m in 1:56.80 July 3) and a head defeat of Ask Victor More (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in one of the Leger trials, the G2 Asahi Hai St Lite Kinen (2200m) at Nakayama Sept. 19.

“After winning in record time at Kokura, the switch to Nakayama with the extra distance and strong opposition was never going to be easy, but he ran above my expectations,” Sugiyama said. “We gave him a break at the farm afterwards, as it must have taken a lot out of him, but he seems fine on his return to the stable.”

Ask Victor More got the better of Do Deuce in the G2 Deep Impact Kinen in March before finishing a respectable fifth in the Satsuki Sho and third in the Tokyo Yushun. He was just held by Gaia Force last time, but can certainly improve for that first-up run.
