Van Vista Looks To Keep Justify On a Roll in Japan

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend–all fillies–running at Hanshin and Nakayama Racecourses. The third of the JRA track hosting racing this weekend is Chuyko, which stages the Champions Cup (formerly Japan Cup Dirt), one of just three Group 1 races on the dirt in Japan each season:

LAPIS PYRITE (f, 2, American Pharoah–Asscher, by Harlan's Holiday) is the first foal to the races for her winning dam, a half-sister to the late three-time Grade I-winning sprinter Lord Nelson (Pulpit). Purchased for $90,000 out of last year's Keeneland September Sale, the Mar. 27 foal is a great-granddaughter of Miss Linda (Arg) (Southern Halo), the 2000 G1 Argentine Oaks winner and that year's champion 3-year-old filly and later the upset winner in this country of the GI Overbrook Spinster S. VAN VISTA (f, 2, Justify–Vanquished, by Empire Maker) was bought back on a bid of $285,000 when offered at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale, but was hammered down to J S Company for $525,000 at KEESEP last fall. The March foal is a half-sister to treble turf graded winner Takeover Target (Harlan's Holiday) and SW Ladies' Privilege (Harlan's Holiday) and her dam is a half-sister to two-time Grade I winner Critical Eye (Dynaformer). Forging Oaks Farm acquired Vanquished for $475,000 in foal to Candy Ride (Arg) at KEENOV in 2017, sold four foals from her that brought over $1.9 million combined and parted ways with the mare for $450,000 carrying to Into Mischief at the 2021 KEENOV sale. Lovely Day Sires First Stakes Winner At Hanshin

Gruner Green (Jpn), by Japanese champion and G1 Tenno Sho (Autumn)/G1 Takarazuka Kinen victor Lovely Day (Jpn), turned in a pillar-to-post effort to win the G3 Radio Nikkei Hai Kyoto Nisai S. by a head at Hanshin on Saturday. He is his sire's first stakes winner from three crops to race.

Fifth choice on the board at 13-1, the Ikuo Aizawa trainee strode out to an early lead and covered a first quarter in :24 flat, while hard-pressed by Bikini Boy (Jpn) (Beach Patrol {Jpn}). That pair raced in tandem from three furlongs into the race, before Gruner Green edged away to lead on the backstretch. The chestnut reached the half-way point in 1:00.40, and showed no signs of weakening several furlongs later, as the field fanned into the home straight.

Held together superbly by Mirco Demuro, as 8-1 shot Top Knife (Jpn) (Declaration Of War) rallied in determined fashion up the inner, Gruner Green just lasted for a narrow score. Wurttemberg (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) made up some late ground to take third, another 1 1/4 lengths back.

Third at first asking over 2000 metres at Tokyo on Oct. 9, Gruner Green graduated there with a stalking trip after cutting back to 1800 metres on Oct. 29.

Pedigree Notes

With his eldest foals just 4-year-olds, Lovely Day's first stakes winner and group winner is Gruner Green. He also has the two-time listed-placed Praelude (Jpn) to his name.

The Special Week (Jpn) mare Lady Derby (Jpn) placed three times at two and three, and hit black-type pay dirt with only her second foal, the Jungle Pocket (Jpn) colt Verde Green (Jpn), who would go on to win a pair of Japanese group races. Now with a dozen foals to her credit, with 11 runners and eight winners, Lady Derby was covered by Cheval Grand (Jpn), but no foal was reported for this year. Second dam Umeno Fiber (Jpn) (Sakura Yutaka O {Jpn}), a champion in her native land and the 1999 Japanese Oaks heroine, is the granddam of the stakes winner and G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas runner-up Sans Rival (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn})

There is pedigree to boot, as the colt's second dam is European Group 3 winner and U.S. listed winner Freefourracing (French Deputy), herself responsible for a pair of black-type winners as well as the dam of SW/GSP Dance Code (Honor Code). AWESOME RESULT (f, 2, Justify–Blossomed, by Deputy Minister) looks to become the eighth winner from nine to the races for her dam, whose daughter Sippican Harbor (Orb) upset the 2018 GI Spinaway S. at Saratoga and was sold to Springhouse Farm for $425,000 in foal to Honor Code at the Keeneland November Sale a couple of months later. Blossomed is also the dam of Grade III-placed Bodacious Babe (Mineshaft), who is responsible for the talented Japanese-based Ju Taro (Arrogate), winner of three of his seven starts and a latest five-length allowance scorer over this dirt track Nov. 13. Among Gun Runner's three Japanese winners from five to race to date is the US-conceived, but Japanese-foaled 3-year-old filly Dreyse (Jpn), who also hails from Argentinian bloodlines.
