Gamble For Grayson Handicapping Challenge Between Little Red Feather Racing, Equibase

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation announced today that it has partnered with Little Red Feather Racing and Equibase Company for the Gamble for Grayson Handicapping Challenge.

The handicapping contest will take place November 28-29 and span five graded stakes races that are scheduled to be held that weekend at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif. Representatives from Little Red Feather and Equibase will have a $500 bankroll, of which $100 must be played on each of the specified races on win, place, show, exacta, trifecta, or superfecta wagers. At the end of the weekend, all remaining bankroll and winnings will be donated to Grayson.

“We thank Little Red Feather and Equibase for recognizing the importance of equine veterinary research,” said Jamie Haydon, president of Grayson. “Grayson's previous handicapping challenges for charity at Indiana Grand and with The Stronach Group were rousing successes, and we appreciate the interest from other organizations to participate in similar contests to benefit our foundation.”

The team representing Little Red Feather is Gary Fenton, managing partner of Little Red Feather; and Kenny Mayne, sports journalist for ESPN. The Equibase team is composed of Christina Blacker, TVG host, reporter, and analyst; and Ellis Star, national racing analyst for Equibase.

“Little Red Feather prioritizes the health and wellness of our racehorses, and Grayson-funded research enables us and all horse owners to ensure that our horses are receiving the best care at all stages of their lives,” said Fenton. “Along with Kenny Mayne, I am excited to put my handicapping skills to the test on behalf of Little Red Feather to raise money for such an important cause.”

“Our team at Equibase is poised for the Grayson gambling challenge and supporting the foundation's work,” said Jason Wilson, president and chief operating officer of Equibase. “I am confident that Christina's and Ellis' handicapping prowess combined with Equibase's handicapping tools will make for an exciting competition with Little Red Feather, and, most importantly, a successful weekend for Grayson and their important work.”

The races that have been selected for the Gamble for Grayson Handicapping Challenge are the grade 1 Hollywood Derby and Matriarch Stakes, the grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap, and the grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes and Cecil B. Demille Stakes.

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation is traditionally the nation's leading source of private funding for equine medical research that benefits all breeds of horses. Since 1983, the foundation has provided more than $29.1 million to fund 384 projects at 45 universities in North America and overseas. Gulfstream West: Millions Preview Program Features Rainbow 6 Pool Guaranteed At $175,000

Five Stakes on Saturday's Millions Preview program at Gulfstream Park West will highlight the six-race sequence of the 20-cent Rainbow 6.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $175,000 Saturday after the popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the eighth consecutive racing day Friday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $702.74.

The $60,000 Millions Classic Preview, the first of five consecutive stakes, will kick off the Rainbow 6 sequence in Race 4. Noble Drama, a multiple-stakes winner with nearly $600,000 in career earnings has been installed as the even-money favorite for the mile stakes for Florida-bred 3-year-olds and up. The David Fawkes trainee will seek his third-straight stakes victory after capturing the Wildcat Heir and Benny The Bull in his two most recent starts. Garter and Tie, a multiple-stakes winner who finished second in the Wildcat Heir, is among the most serious threats to Noble Drama.

Briella is scheduled to chase her third straight victory in the $60,000 Juvenile Fillies Sprint in Race 5, a 6 ½-furlong sprint for Florida-bred 2-year-old fillies. Trainer Michael Yates' homebred daughter of Cajun Breeze defeated open company in a first-level optional claiming allowance over the Gulfstream Park West track. Carlos David-trained Shea D Summer was installed as the 9-5 favorite off an impressive debut victory at Gulfstream Park West Oct. 7.

Shivaree, the 2020 Curlin Florida Derby (G1) runner-up, is ready to make his first start since finishing off the board in the Aug. 7 Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga in the $60,000 Millions Sprint Preview, a six-furlong dash for Florida-bred 3-year-olds and up carded as Race 7. The Ralph Nicks trainee is 1-for-1 at Gulfstream Park West, where he broke his maiden by nearly 10 lengths nearly a year ago. Larry Bates-trained With Verve, who defeated Shivaree by a neck while winning the Hutcheson at Gulfstream in February. Kelly Breen-trained As Seen On Tv, who finished third in the Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream in February, returns to Gulfstream Park West, where he won the Juvenile Sprint last year.

Real Talk, a sharp debut winner at Gulfstream, has been installed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the $60,000 Juvenile Sprint, a 6 ½-furlong sprint for Florida-bred 2-year-olds. Nicks-trained Real Talk romped by six lengths in his Sept. 6 debut despite running into traffic in the stretch. Yates-trained Poppy's Pride will seek his third-straight win after capturing the off-the-turn Armed Forces Stakes last time out.

Peter Walder-trained Cory Gal, a six-length optional claiming allowance winner last time out, has been installed as the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the $60,000 Millions Distaff Preview, a seven-furlong event for Florida-bred fillies and mares carded as Race 8. Cory Gal was claimed for $25,000 out of a victory in her previous start. Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained Sound Machine, an open-stakes winner, is scheduled to make her first start at Gulfstream Park West after finishing third in the Miss Preakness (G3) at Pimlico in her most recent start. Terri Pompay-trained Heiressall, who finished second in last year's Millions Distaff Preview, enters this year's running off a victory in the seven-furlong Sheer Drama at Gulfstream.

A mile maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds will wrap up the Rainbow 6 sequence in Race 9.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Economics Professor Marshall Gramm Wins 2020 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge

Making the biggest wagering score of his life, Marshall Gramm, an economics professor at Rhodes College and a racehorse owner from Memphis, Tenn., nailed a cold exacta with Authentic and Improbable for $170,250 in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) to propel him to victory last Saturday in the 2020 Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge.

The 12th annual Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge, Thoroughbred racing's biggest live-money tournament, held Nov. 6-7, featured 430 top horseplayers wagering on the two-day card of the 37th Breeders' Cup World Championships at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington.

Gramm, 47, finished with a total score of 170,250 points. Combined with his first-place prize of $322,500, Gramm had total winnings of $492,750. That put him ahead of second-place finisher Jonathon Kinchen, NYRA/Fox Sports television handicapper and analyst. Kinchen compiled 161,025.20 points, and combined with his second-place prize of $215,000, he had total winnings of $376,025.20. Dylan Donnelly, from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., finished third with 136,200 points and $118,250 in prize money, for total winnings of $254,450.

In this year's BCBC, each player was required to fund a $2,500 buy-in and a $7,500 betting bankroll ($10,000 total).  All buy-in monies were applied to the prize pool, making the total prize pool $1,075,000. Players made real wagers (win, place, show, exacta, trifecta and daily double) with their $7,500 bankroll on 22 races over the two days and kept all monies earned from their wagering.

A big sports fan who grew up in Washington, D.C., Gramm loved “numbers and statistics,” and learned the handicapping game by reading books from noted racing journalist and author Andrew Beyer.

Gramm has played in the BCBC five of the last six years, registering his best finish in 2018, taking fifth place. He has been teaching economics at Rhodes College since 2000 and currently chairs the department. Gramm has taught a course at Rhodes called Economics of Racetrack Wagering Markets, which he describes as a class on “decision making, price discovery and probability.” Along with Clay Sanders, he is also co-managing partner of Ten Strike Racing, a stable that has won 338 races, including stakes winners Dot Matrix, Long On Value and Warrior's Charge.

Gramm experienced a range of emotions when he learned that he had won the tournament. “When I hit (the exacta), I was thrilled, my biggest score ever. You know you've had a great day, but it was nerve-racking, and a relief, and I will always be able to say that I am a BCBC Champion.”

In this year's BCBC, Gramm was in contention throughout. On Friday, he cashed a $600 daily-double wager on Vequist in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), followed by Aunt Pearl (IRE) capturing the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1). Those bets earned him $17,350 and he closed out the first day of competition in seventh place.

On Saturday, Gramm went “all in” on Monomoy Girl winning the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), wagering his $18,165 bankroll and more than doubling his money. After hitting on a minimum show bet in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1), Gramm went into the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic in 11th place with $36,930. In the climactic race of the World Championships, he made six individual exacta wagers using Authentic, Improbable and Tom's d'Etat. Gramm wagered $7,500 on the Authentic-Improbable combination and won the  tournament.

Runner-up Kinchen had nothing but praise for Gramm. “Marshall is a dear friend and I am  very happy for him. The BCBC is the Masters of handicapping contests. It's not all about the money, it's about the title. I wanted to win, but there are about three people in the world I am ok running second to, and Marshall is one of them.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions at Keeneland, most of the BCBC tournament play was conducted online at TVG.com, the official Breeders' Cup wagering partner, Xpressbet.com and NYRA Bets. The BCBC was also conducted at designated satellite locations at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, Calif., and at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

A list of the top 15 BCBC finishers appears below.  Complete tournament results are available here.
