Woodbine: Mandatory Payout Of Power Pick-6 Scheduled For Thursday

Woodbine Entertainment has announced a mandatory payout for the Power Pick-6 will be held this Thursday (July 17) at Woodbine Racetrack.

The Power Pick-6 carryover sits at $171,620.82 heading into Thursday's mandatory payout.

A jackpot-style wager, the Power Pick-6 requires a horseplayer to select the winners of six consecutive races and only pays out the entire jackpot when there is just one winning ticket sold, except for a mandatory payout.

Horseplayers will have an opportunity at a share of the entire Jackpot this Thursday, as the Power Pick-6 mandatory payout starts on Race 3 and continues through the balance of the eight-race program. The total pool is expected to exceed $500,000.

Thursday's mandatory payout marks the first-time Woodbine will offer a mandatory payout on the Power Pick-6. The multi-leg jackpot-style wager debuted in October 2019. The Power Pick-6 has a $0.20 minimum and 15 per cent takeout.

Post time for Thursday's card is 1:10 p.m.

Belmont: Saturday’s Pick 6 Features Carryover Of $54,191

Saturday's Pick 6 will be bolstered by a $54,191 carryover as the multi-race wager went unsolved on Friday at Belmont Park.

The $1 Pick 6, implemented at the current 48-day Belmont spring/summer meet, returned $433 to bettors who selected 5-of-6 winners correctly.

Friday's Pick 6 sequence kicked off in Race 4 as Bourbon's Hope [No. 1, $11.60] graduated at first asking in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight for New York-bred juveniles. Joel Rosario engineered the winning trip for trainer Charlton Baker.

Jose Lezcano captured the next two legs with April Antics [No. 9, $6] scoring in Race 5 in a state-bred maiden claiming sprint for conditioner James Ryerson and Dreams of Tomorrow [No. 8, $4.60] proving to be much the best for Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey in an off-the-turf optional-claiming mile in Race 6.

Three Jokers [No. 2, $7.30], with Jose Ortiz up, captured a 1 1/16-mile state-bred optional-claiming event in Race 7 ahead of the day's biggest upset when Dancingwthdaffodls [No. 7, $46.20] rallied down the center of the track under Dylan Davis in Race 8 to win an off-the-turf optional claiming event for conditioner Eduardo Jones.

With the Pick 6 carryover already secured, Giggle Factory [No. 9, $9.90] took command past the furlong marker to win the off-the-turf nightcap by open lengths in a one-turn mile claimer for jockey Junior Alvarado and trainer Tom Albertrani.

Featuring a $1 bet minimum and 15 percent takeout, the Pick 6 wager requires bettors to select the first-place finisher of six designated races on the card. A total of 75 percent of the full pool, minus takeout, will be distributed to bettors who select the first-place finisher of all six races. A consolation payout of 25 percent of the net pool will be distributed to tickets selecting 5-of-6 winners.

In the event there are no tickets with six winners, there will be a carryover of 75 percent of the net pool into the next day of the meet with the remaining 25 percent of the net pool distributed as a consolation payout to tickets selecting the first-place finisher in the greatest number of races on the card. On carryover days, the Pick 6 is offered with a 24 percent takeout.

The $1 Pick 6 replaced the Empire 6, a jackpot style wager featuring a $0.20 bet minimum first offered in August 2019 at Saratoga Race Course.

Saturday's Pick 6 kicks off in Race 6 at 3:34 p.m. Eastern and includes the Grade 1, $700,000 Belmont Oaks Invitational in Race 7; the Grade 3, $150,000 Victory Ride in Race 8; and the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Derby Invitational in Race 9. First post on Saturday's 11-race card is 1 p.m. Eastern.

Equibase Analysis: Tokyo Gold, Not Bolshoi Ballet, The Horse To Beat In Belmont Derby

This Saturday's Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Derby Invitational drew a field of nine horses, six which are stakes winners with five of those entering the race off victories. Leading the field in earnings is Tokyo Gold (FR), winner of the Group 3 Derby Italiano Universita Campus Bio-Med in May, otherwise known as the Italian Derby.

However, likely favoritism among bettors is likely to come from Bolshoi Ballet (IRE), winner of the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial before a disappointing seventh place finish as the betting favorite in the Group 1 Cazoo Derby (otherwise known as the Epsom Derby) last month.

Du Jour deserves respect as he enters the Belmont Derby off a victory in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes in May, which was his third straight win. Similarly, Sainthood won the Grade 3 Pennine Ridge Stakes at the end of May at Belmont, but on dirt, when the race was transferred to the main track due to the condition of the turf course.

Cellist is another of the recent stakes winners, having captured the Audubon Stakes at the end of May, with Palazzi beaten three-quarters of a length when second in that race. Hard Love won the Woodhaven Stakes on turf in April following five months off before a strong allowance win last month.

Safe Conduct and Hidden Enemy (IRE) round out the field, the former an allowance winner at the start of May before a poor fourth place finish in the Pennine Ridge at the end of the month and the latter a non-threatening fourth in both the American Turf and Audubon.

Tokyo Gold (FR) had a fairly good 2-year-old campaign when winning the second and third starts of his career last summer, the latter of the two in a listed stakes. Finishing off his season, Tokyo Gold (FR) was beaten more than 20 lengths in a group three race but that was run on heavy ground which he did not care for. Returning for his sophomore season in March, Tokyo Gold (FR) finished second in a listed stakes before a fourth of nine finish in the Prix Noailles Stakes. His “light bulb” moment came in the Italian Derby on May 23 when, after racing in the back of the pack for most of the race, Tokyo Gold (FR) took to the middle of the track and accelerated strongly to win by four lengths, eased up at the finish.

The acceleration shown when given his cue in the Italian Derby showed Tokyo Gold (FR) had come of age and the pattern of improving ™ Equibase® Speed Figures this year (97, 105 then 107) suggests Tokyo Gold (FR) is the one to beat in this year's Belmont Derby Invitational, particularly as he is shortening up in distance from one mile and three-eighths to one mile and one-quarter and gets John Velazquez to ride.

Bolshoi Ballet (IRE) was sent to post as the fairly heavy favorite in the Epsom Derby last month on the strength of his six length win one month earlier in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial but checked in seventh. The reason for the poor effort was revealed as soon as the colt returned to be unsaddled as it was discovered he had sustained a cut to his hind leg in the early portions of the race. Prior to the Derby Trial, Bolshoi Ballet (IRE) won the Ballysax Stakes rather easily in his 3-year-old, following six months off. Earning a 106 ™ figure in the Ballysax before a new career-best 113 figure in the Derby Trial, it wouldn't be a leap to assume the colt would have improved again in the Epsom Derby if not for the injury and so if he returns to the form shown in those two earlier wins, both at the mile and one-quarter distance of the Belmont Derby, Bolshoi Ballet (IRE) could provide us with a thrilling battle with Tokyo Gold (FR) in this race.

Hard Love is an improving colt who has potential to post the minor upset if he continues the pattern of improvement he began in April after returning from five months off. A winner on debut last fall, Hard Love improved to a 102 figure effort when second in the Central Park Stakes, then following the layoff won the Woodhaven Stakes in April with a 99 figure. Flattered when the runner-up won his next start, Hard Love entered an allowance race over this turf course to prepare for the Belmont Derby and although not a stakes race it must be noted he was only one of two horses in the 12 horse field which were 3-year-olds, the rest being older horses. Improving markedly to a 105 figure winning that race, if Hard Love can take a similar step forward by six points into the 111 range he could run as well as either Bolshoi Ballet (IRE) and Tokyo Gold (FR) and as such may have a legitimate shot to win this year's Belmont Derby Invitational.

Another improving colt is Du Jour, who has won three races in a row. The pattern of improvement from 84 to 99 to 103 in terms of his Equibase Speed Figures shows a horse which is getting physically and mentally stronger as the season goes on. Du Jour earned his most recent win in the American Turf Stakes on Kentucky Derby day and prevailed nicely in a field of 14. Now in the hands of Hall-of-Fame trainer Bill Mott and retaining the services of jockey Flavien Prat, who has been in the saddle for all three of the colt's wins, Du Jour has to be a horse we consider when wagering on this race.

The rest of the field, with their best ™ Equibase Speed Figures, is Cellist (99), Hidden Enemy (IRE) (93), Palazzi (98), Safe Conduct (99) and Sainthood (101).

Win contenders:
Tokyo Gold (FR)
Bolshoi Ballet (IRE)
Hard Love
Du Jour

Saturday’s Cross Country Pick 5 Consists Of All Graded Stakes From Belmont, Delaware

The New York Racing Association Inc. [NYRA] will host an all graded-stakes Cross Country Pick 5 on Saturday featuring racing action from Belmont Park and Delaware Park.

Free Equibase past performances for the Cross Country Pick 5 sequence are now available for download at https://www.nyra.com/belmont/racing/cross-country-wagers.

Saturday's sequence kicks off with the Grade 3, $150,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial [Race 5, 3:15 p.m.], an 11-furlong turf test for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up at Delaware Park.

A talented field of nine is led by Godolphin homebred Micheline for trainer Mike Stidham. The 4-year-old Bernardini bay, who boasts a record of 15-5-2-1 with purse earnings of $674,478, captured the nine-furlong Grade 2 Hillsborough over firm Tampa Bay Downs turf in March. The Grade 1-placed filly is out of the multiple Grade 1-winning Include mare Panty Raid. Steep opposition will be provided by Blame Debbie, who captured the 12-furlong Grade 3 Dowager in October at Keeneland and enters from a front-running score at the same distance in the Searching on June 13 over good going at Pimlico for trainer Graham Motion, who also sends out the streaking Tonal Verse.

An international field will assemble in the second leg of the sequence for the $700,000 Belmont Oaks Invitational, opening jewel of the Turf Triple series for sophomore fillies going 10 furlongs on the inner turf in Race 7 at 4:06 p.m.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien will saddle the regally-bred Santa Barbara, a half-sister to 2019 Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf-winner Iridessa and 2020 Breeders' Cup Mile victor Order of Australia. Cirona, trained by Christophe Ferland, captured the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte in April at Longchamp and was narrowly defeated in the 10-furlong Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary on soft turf in May at Longchamp. Local chances include the one-two finishers of last month's Grade 3 Wonder Again in Con Lima for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher and Plum Ali for conditioner Christophe Clement.

The third leg will see eight competitors line up in the Grade 3, $150,000 Victory Ride [Race 8, 4:38 p.m.], a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for sophomore fillies at Belmont. Trainer Brad Cox will saddle a pair of top contenders in the undefeated multiple stakes-winner Australasia and stakes-winner Inject.

The Louisiana-bred Australasia, by Sky Kingdom, bested Victory Ride-rivals Bella Sofia and Miss Brazil in the six-furlong Jersey Girl on June 6 at Belmont. Inject, a bay daughter of Frosted, romped by 5 1/4-lengths last out in the six-furlong Goldfinch on May 15 over a muddy Pimlico main track.

The penultimate leg, the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Derby Invitational [Race 9, 5:12 p.m.] at 10-furlongs for sophomores on the inner turf, is topped by the O'Brien-trained Bolshoi Ballet, who finished seventh as the favorite last out in the Group 1 Epsom Derby. The Galileo bay won both his efforts in 2021 prior to the Epsom Derby. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott will be represented by last-out Grade 2 American Turf-winner Du Jour, while Jonathan Thomas will saddle stakes winner Hard Love.

The sequence concludes at Delaware Park with the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap [Race 9, 5:15 p.m.], a 10-furlong test for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up featuring multiple graded stakes winner Bonny South.

The Juddmonte Farms' homebred daughter of Munnings captured the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks last year and added the Grade 3 Doubledogdare to her ledger in April at Keeneland. Trained by Brad Cox, Bonny South enters from a runner-up effort to Letruska in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps on June 5 at Belmont. Queen Nekia, a five-time winner at Delaware Park, will look to rebound from a distant fourth in the Ogden Phipps for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr.

The minimum bet for the multi-track, multi-race wager is 50 cents. Wagering on the Cross Country Pick 5 is also available on ADW platforms and at simulcast facilities across the country. Every week will feature a mandatory payout of the net pool.

The Cross Country Pick 5 will continue each Saturday throughout the year. For more information, visit NYRABets.com.
