Sea The Moon’s Fantastic Moon Emulates Sire With Deutsches Derby Triumph

Sea The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) powered to a wide-margin triumph underneath Hamburg's stands' side rail in the 2014 G1 Deutsches Derby and his Sarah Steinberg-trained son Fantastic Moon (Ger) ploughed the same furrow to claim a clear-cut success of his own in Sunday's latest renewal of the German highlight.

The 31-5 third favourite was positioned well off the pace with just one of his 19 rivals in arrears for the most part. Inching forward on the home turn, he was sent wide into the straight to launch his challenge with 300 metres remaining and kept on powerfully under late rousting to prevail by 2 1/4 lengths from 'TDN Rising Star' Mr Hollywood (Ire) (Iquitos {Ger}). Gestut Ebbesloh's homebred Weracruz (Ger) (Cracksman {GB}), the lone filly in a field of 20, stayed on well to finish 2 1/2 lengths adrift in third.

Fantastic Moon's triumph was a first win in the contest for Rene Piechulek, whose career high came aboard Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ge}) in 2021's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. “I was able to keep him well relaxed at the back of field as we knew the trip might be at the extent of his stamina,” he explained. “He galloped easily throughout and quickened really well into the straight where I was able to make full use of his great finishing speed. It is a very emotional moment for my wife and I, we are extremely happy.” The win was also a first edition for trainer Sarah Steinberg, who added, “This almost unbelievable. Fantastic Moon is a very ambitious horse with a big heart and it was good that Rene could settle him way behind and then make use of his great turn of foot.”

Fantastic Moon's pathway to glory began with a perfect two-race 2022 campaign which featured a win in Germany's premier juvenile contest, Cologne's G3 Preis des Winterfavoriten, and he met with his only defeat when third behind My Hollywood in Munich's G3 Bavarian Classic on seasonal debut at the beginning of May. He regained winning ways in his latest start, accounting for a clutch of reopposing contenders going 10 furlongs in Baden-Baden's May 20 Derby-Trial.

Pedigree Notes
Fantastic Moon, who becomes the third Group 1 winner for his sire, is the second foal and lone scorer produced by a winning half-sister to G3 Sveaas Minnelop victor Fearless Hunter (Ger) (Alhaarth {Ire}) and Listed Arnfinn Lund Minnelop third Fil Rouge (Ger) (Lord Of England {Ger}). The March-foaled bay, who is from the family of MGISW sire Street Boss (Street Cry {Ire}), is kin to a yearling filly by Starspangledbanner (Aus) and a weanling filly by Masar (Ire). His second dam Firedance (Ger) (Lomitas {GB}) is a half-sister to G3 Rockfel S. victrix Germane (GB) (Distant Relative [Ire}) and the dual stakes-winning G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit runner-up Fabriano (GB) (Shardari {Ire}). Germane, in turn, is the dam of stakes-winning GI Hollywood Derby third Lucky Chappy (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and Listed Kolner Stuten Meile runner-up Granted (Fr) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}).

Camelot’s Sammarco Prevails In Deutsches Derby Thriller

Hamburg's new starting stalls, wider than before, were the reason for a near 30-minute delay to Sunday's G1 IDEE 153rd Deutsches Derby and course technicians worked furiously on making necessary adjustments to the running rail so that they would fit the track. In the €650,000 contest itself, it was a matter of millimetres at the finish too as Gestut Park Wiedingen's G2 Union-Rennen victor Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB) denied the Markus Klug-trained duo Schwarzer Peter (Ger) (Neatico {Ger}) and So Moonstruck (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in a thrilling conclusion to Germany's seasonal highlight.

Sammarco opened up with a neck defeat of subsequent sales-race scorer Alaska Tiger (Ire) (Maxios {GB}) when graduating over 7 1/2 furlongs in his Oct. 31 debut at Halle, his lone juvenile start, and returned to run second behind the reopposing Lavello (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) in Munich's 10-furlong May 1 G3 Bavarian Classic on seasonal debut. He lined up for this date with destiny coming back off a narrow defeat of So Moonstruck upped to 11 furlongs in Cologne's June 6 G2 Union-Rennen, Germany's premier trial for this race, and was sharp from the two box to race third going by the judge first time. Comfortable there until shuffled back when caught in a pocket off the home turn, the 63-10 chance made rapid headway once in the clear to launch his bid passing the furlong marker and was driven out to prevail in a blanket finish. The winning margins were a short head and the same back to Schwarzer Peter and So Moonstruck.

“I am overwhelmed and can hardly speak at the moment,” said rider Bauyrzhan Murzabayev after claiming a first success in the contest. “I am so proud of this horse. We had the perfect race, right from the start, although the pace could have been a bit stronger. I have to be very thankful that Jozef Bojko [aboard Maraseem] allowed some room soon after entering the straight. That helped enormously as I was able to find a free passage on the inside.”

Contributing to a list of notable firsts, Gestut Park Wiedingen's Baron Helmut von Finck added, “We have been a breeding operation for 35 years now and this is a lifetime dream come true. It is absolutely awesome.”

Trainer Peter Schiergen took his tally in the feature to six and said, “Everything went smoothly and exactly as we had planned. Bauyrzhan gave Sammarco a great ride and really earned his first Group 1 and Derby victory. It was only Sammarco's fourth start, he has won two Group races now and was Group-placed before. I am quite positive that he is a true Group 1 horse in the making.”

Sammarco, who becomes the 10th Group 1 winner for his sire, is the first of three foals produced by Listed Winterkonigin-Trial placegetter Saloon Sold (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Baden-Baden Cup victrix Salonblue (Ire) (Bluebird). The latter's progeny list includes Listed Melbourne Cup Day Plate victor Salon Soldier (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), GSP Listed Junioren-Preis victrix Salonlove (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) and Listed Premio Tadolina winner Monblue (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). She is also the second dam of Listed Preis der Baden-Badener Hotellerie & Gastronomie winner Serena (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Salonblue is also kin to G3 Curragh Cup victor Peppertree Lane (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and stakes-winning G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit second Salonhonor (Ger) (Highest Honor {Fr}). Another of Salonblue's siblings, Salontasche (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}), has four stakes performers to her credit headed by multiple stakes-winning G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) runner-up Sarandia (Ger) (Dansili {GB}) and G3 Bavarian Classic victor Saphir (Ger) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}). Sammarco's fourth dam is G2 German 1000 Guineas third Salonrolle (Ire) (Tirol {Ire}). Saloon Sold has the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Salon Starlet (Ger) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) and a yearling colt by Areion (Ger) to come.

Adlerflug’s Torquator Tasso Nabs Hamburg Feature

Last term's G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}–Tijuana {Ger}, by Toylsome {GB}) could manage only sixth when contesting Baden-Baden's May 29 G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft on seasonal return last time and bounced back in style to claim a second straight edition of Saturday's G2 wettstar.de Grosser Hansa-Preis at Hamburg. The 13-10 favourite raced third passing the judge first time and remained in that slot for the most part. Sent forward on the turn to go second into the home straight, he drifted wide towards the stands' side rail to seize control approaching the final furlong and was ridden clear of overmatched rivals for a clear-cut success. Gestut Auenquelle's 5-year-old hit the line 3 1/2 lengths ahead of Northern Ruler (Ger) (Ruler Of The World {Ire}), with Auenquelle's homebred Virginia Storm (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}) 1 3/4 lengths adrift in third.

“We agreed to completely forget his last run at Baden-Baden,” rider Rene Piechulek told GaloppOnline. “You can tell straight away when he's in a good mood and he gave me a much better feeling before the race today.” Trainer Marcel Weiss added, “That really was a huge relief. The start of the year was not so good, but that's his biorhythm and you just have to accept it. I'm very satisfied with today's run and everything is now back on track. We will discuss with the owners how to proceed in the coming days.” Gestut Auenquelle's Peter Michael Endres has a more definite plan in mind. “We're going to Ascot for the [G1] King George,” he said. “He'll then go to Baden-Baden [for the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden] and then to the [G1 Prix de l'] Arc [de Triomphe]. It is certain that he will become a stallion at Auenquelle next year.”

Torquator Tasso is the second of seven foals out of Tijuana (Ger) (Toylsome {GB}), herself a half-sister to three stakes performers headed by G2 Diana-Trial victrix Tusked Wings (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}). His stakes-placed third dam Turbaine (Trempolino) is a half-sister to G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning matriarch Urban Sea (Miswaki), whose progeny list is headed by MG1SW sires Galileo (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) and Sea the Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}). Urban Sea, of course, is a daughter of legendary blue hen Allegretta (GB) (Lombard {GB}), herself full to Adlerflug's second dam Alya (Ger), which means Allegretta's dual stakes-placed dam Anatevka (Ger) (Espresso {GB}) features 4×5 in Torquator Tasso's pedigree. Tijuana, who has also thrown G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen victor Tunnes (Ger) (Guiliani {Ire}), has the unraced 2-year-old filly Tiara Hilleshage (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), a yearling colt by Adlerflug (Ger) and a weanling filly by Guiliani (Ire) to come.

Sisfahan Emulates Sire Isfahan In The Deutsches Derby

Following in the steps of his sire Isfahan (Ger), Sisfahan (Fr) came out on top of the cluster of contenders for Sunday's G1 IDEE Deutsches Derby at Hamburg to realise a dream for Darius Racing. Runner-up in the 11-furlong Listed Derby Trial at Dusseldorf May 30, the €20,000 Arqana Autumn Sale purchase was waited with in rear of the pack early by Andrasch Starke from his wide draw. Remaining towards the tail but in touch straightening for home, the Henk Grewe-trained chestnut was sent towards the far rail as Stall Nizza's Alter Adler (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) looked the winner striking for home towards the other side. Getting to the front inside the final 50 yards, the 11-1 shot beat that 10-3 favourite by 1 1/4 lengths to emulate Isfahan's success here five years ago, with the 31-1 outsider Imi (Ger) (Tertullian) 1 3/4 lengths back in third.

Campaigned in France at two, Sisfahan was runner-up over nine furlongs on debut at Lyon-la-Soie in October before going one better at the expense of the useful Fabre runner Saranac (Fr) (Gleneagles {Ire}) over an extra furlong at Lyon-Parilly the following month. Beaten by the re-opposing Aff Un Zo (Ger) (Kallisto {Ger}) in the Derby Trial last time, he had progressed notably in the interim and while some will point to the fact that he benefitted from the guile of Starke, the same wide tactics had failed in the G3 Stutenpreis earlier on the card when employed by Theo Bachelot on the favourite Amazing Grace (Ger) (Protectionist {Ger}). Starke, a genuine legend of the German weighing room whose first success in this came on Robertico (GB) (Robellino) in 1998, was equalling the record of eight victories set by Gerhard Streit from 1938-1961.

Born in Stade near Hamburg, Starke was in ebullient mood. “Hamburg, the king is back!,” he exclaimed. “There is always so much speculation prior to this race, is the starting stall number good or bad, have I made the right choice and so on. I am not excluding myself here, mistakes are always made, but I had confidence in him and chose him. He is such a lightly-raced horse, he ran only once this year when he was second in Dusseldorf where I sent him too early, so I decided to wait longer today and it was absolutely right.”

Grewe was registering a first Derby victory and said, “It is unbelievable and I'm so emotional. I feel so relieved with the pressure to win this race now gone–it is done. It is so nice that Andrasch was on the horse, my whole family is here today and I never even saw where he was positioned in the race, it was only in the final turn that I saw that he was still going strong. He is a great horse and it is an abolute dream today.” Owner Stefan Oschmann added, “Every owner dreams of winning the Derby and for me winning it with a son of Isfahan makes it very special. I was quite hopeful and now we are completely overwhelmed and so happy.”

Sisfahan, who hails from the first crop of his sire, is the only known foal out of the twice-winning Kendalee (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) whose dam Zandalee (Fr) (Trempolino) is a granddaughter of the Raise a Native mare Only a Native. Her other descendants include the GIII Miss Grillo S. winner Maram (Sahm).
