Haltered Horses More Resistant To Handler Cues Than Bridled Horses

Horses wearing bridles tend to pay more attention to their handlers than horses wearing halters, a Swedish study shows. Bridled horses also respond faster and to lighter rein pressure than horses that are haltered, reports The Horse.

Marie Eisersiö and researchers from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala believe that a better understanding of how rein tension affects horses could help riders and handlers improve their abilities, as well as lead to improved equine performance and welfare.

[Story Continues Below]

The team found that horses tend to fight a bit more than a halter; the scientists believe that this is because horses have learned to associate the pieces of equipment with different experiences, like trying to pull the reins from a rider's hands to alleviate discomfort.

The scientists used twenty 4- to 15-year old mares and geldings that were used as lesson horses. The team used a tension meter to determine how much pressure had to be applied to get the horse to back up. They also observed the horse's behavior. Each horse was tested eight times in a nylon halter and eight times in a bridle with a snaffle bit.

The team found that horses responded to less tension when they were bridled than when they wore a halter. They also noted that bridled horses tossed their heads and gaped their mouths to try to avoid the bit. This is an indicator that many horses don't receive relief from rein tension when doing what they are asked, report the scientists.

The researchers note that applying learning theory and negative reinforcement correctly should allow for the use of softer equipment.

Retired Racehorse Project’s Silent Auction Open

The silent auction portion of the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP)’s fundraising for the 2021 Thoroughbred Makeover opened Thursday. The online auction will close Saturday, Oct. 10, at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Racing memorabilia, experiences or services, artwork, jewelry, and equestrian items are among the items up for bid. Halters worn by Authentic (Into Mischief), Tiz The Law (Constitution), Catholic Boy (More Than Ready), English Channel (Smart Strike), and Get Stormy (Stormy Atlantic) are among the items included.

“Although we’ll certainly miss gathering at the Kentucky Horse Park for the Makeover and our traditional silent auction, the virtual event has great potential for a broader group of bidders,” said RRP board president Carolyn Karlson. “The OTTBs and their trainers need our support more than ever this year, and the RRP Silent Auction is a great way to have fun and raise money for such a deserving cause.”

Visit the auction site for more information or to place a bid.

American Pharoah Halter Headlines Iowa Aftercare Auction

Ashford Stud has donated a halter won by its resident Triple Crown winner American Pharoah for an upcoming online auction to benefit Hope After Racing Thoroughbreds (HART), an Iowa-based aftercare organization.

The silent-auction fundraiser will be held exclusively online beginning at noon Friday, June 26 and will conclude Friday, July 3, at 8:30 p.m. Central time. The auction features other memorabilia, services, photos, paintings, tack and more. All the proceeds go to HART’s care, rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming of retired racehorses from Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino. Those wishing to donate outside of the auction may do so directly through HART’s website at iahart.org.

“We’re so grateful to Ashford Stud for donating this halter worn by one of the all-time greats,” said HART president Jon Moss. “This is a chance for a racing, horse or sports enthusiast to own this priceless memorabilia while helping horses that don’t have a set future when they are through racing. HART finds safe, loving homes for our retired racehorses, preparing them for second careers in the show ring, eventing, trail riding or simply as pleasure or companion horses.”
