Immaculately Bred Tapit Colt Off the Mark in Japan

1st-Hakodate, ¥9,680,000 ($87,717), Maiden, 2yo, 1800mT, 1:50.3, gd/fm.
FIFTY CHEVY (c, 2, Tapit–Stopchargingmaria {MGISW, $3,014,000}, by Tale of the Cat), an $825,000 purchase out of last year's Keeneland September sale, made the majority of the pace in his June 13 debut going this distance at Tokyo before retreating in the final 200 meters to finish fourth. Better than a 10-1 chance for this second go, the beautifully bred bay was away only fairly from gate 11 and raced with just two rivals behind as they hit the first turn. Unhappy with his mount's positioning behind a slow pace, jockey Takeshi Yokoyama boldly hit the gas with about 5 1/2 furlongs to travel, allowing Fifty Chevy to stride into the lead at the 800-meter pole. Nursed along on the turn, Fifty Chevy responded gamely when set down in upper stretch and began looking for the line in the final 50 meters, but got there with a half-length to spare. Winner of the 2014 GI CCA Oaks and GI Alabama S. for owner Mike Repole, Stopchargingmaria was a $3.15-million buyback at that year's FTKNOV sale before being purchased privately by Louise and Kiki Courtelis' Town and Country Farms. Upset winner of the 2015 GI Breeders' Cup Distaff, the mare remained in training through her 5-year-old season and was knocked down to Three Chimneys for $2.8 million at FTKNOV in 2016. She was most recently acquired by Whisper Hill Farm for $4.4 million with this foal in utero at the 2018 FTKNOV sale. Three-year-old filly Stillchargingmaria (Pioneerof the Nile), a $1.9-million graduate of FTKNOV and her dam's first produce, won her maiden at Lone Star Park this past April and added a July 5 allowance, both on turf. Stopchargingmaria is the dam of a yearling full-brother to Fifty Chevy and a filly foal by Quality Road. The winning owner also campaigns Vanishing Point (Tapit), the full-brother to multiple champion Unique Bella, who cost $1.5 million at KEESEP in 2019. Sales history: $825,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP. 5th-HAK, ¥13,400,000 ($122k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1700m
POISON ARROW (c, 2, Arrogate–Crosswinds, by Storm Cat) fetched $750K at last year's Keeneland September sale, making him the most expensive of 41 of the late stallion (by Unbridled's Song)'s first-crop yearlings to sell (from 59 through the ring) in 2020. The Mar. 31 foal is a half-brother to $725K KEESEP grad Current (Curlin), a Grade III winner on turf as a juvenile, and to Weep No More (Mineshaft), who upset the 2016 GI Central Bank Ashland S. The chestnut's granddam is Juddmonte's Flute (Seattle Slew), winner of the 2001 GI Kentucky Oaks and GI Alabama S. and subsequently the dam of Filimbi (Mizzen Mast), a Grade III winner and four times placed in Grade I company on the grass. “We were really happy when he was so well accepted,” Hinkle Farms' Henry Hinkle told the TDN's Brian DiDonato after the colt's sale. “We got a lot of compliments on him. He's one of the nicest colts we've ever brought up here to sell.” Filimbi is also responsible for a member of Arrogate's first crop, the 2-year-old colt Calloway Peak, who is in training at Saratoga. FUJIN SHOJO (f, 2, Speightstown–Big Raven {Ire}, by Fastnet Rock {Aus}), a $235K KEESEP acquisition, is sadly the lone produce of her dam, a daughter of GSW Devil By Design (Medaglia d'Oro), who produced GISW Competitionofideas to the cover of Speightstown in 2015. The progeny of the WinStar stallion have long been coveted in Japan, as he is the sire to date of 33 winners from 37 starters, including GISW mare Mozu Superflare; Matera Sky, a Group 3 winner at home, runner-up in the 2019 G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen and twice an unlucky loser of the Saudi Sprint; and three additional black-type winners. In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or -conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hakodate and Kokura Racecourses. A pair of US-breds see action at group level on the turf this weekend, as Lotus Land (Point of Entry) contests the G3 Chukyo Kinen (1800m), while Group 1 winner Cafe Pharoah (American Pharoah) tries the grass for the first time in the G3 Hakodate Kinen (2000m). PREFERRED RUN (f, 3, Mshawish–Little Miss Muffet, by Scat Daddy) is the year-younger half-sister to the aforementioned Lotus Land, and while she hasn't been a factor in three tries on the grass to begin her career, neither has she been beaten by excessive margins in any of those appearances. The daughter of a dual-surface Grade I-winning sire, Preferred Run has license to take to this new surface, as her female family includes champion Brocco (Kris S.), among others. DANON PEEKABOO (JPN) (c, 2, Kitten's Joy–Joyful Victory, by Tapit) backs up on two weeks' rest, having finished a debut second to champion Champagne Room (Broken Vow)'s well-meant half-brother Fidele (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) after making the majority of the running over this course and distance (see below, gate 1) July 4. Grade I winner Joyful Victory was acquired privately by Shadai Farm in 2016, was bred to American Pharoah the following winter and produced the filly Sky Nile, herself a debut winner on dirt last December. Danon Peekaboo, a half-brother to SP Jennifer's Dream (Medaglia d'Oro) and MSP Saqqara King (American Pharoah), fetched ¥105 million ($982,202) from Danox Co. Ltd. at last year's JRHA Select Sale. 12th-HAK, ¥28,600,000 ($260k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1200mT
LECCE BAROQUE (f, 4, Uncle Mo–My Fast One, by Elusive Quality) ran a hole in the wind in her first two starts, scoring by a combined 19 lengths (see below, gate 10), but the wheels came off when ninth to Cafe Pharoah at 2-1 in last year's G3 Unicorn S. She has since posted a runner-up effort from three trips to the post, but the $410,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $525,000 OBS March breezer makes an interesting shift to the turf for the first time here. Produced by a half-sister to SW No Mo Dough (Uncle Mo), Lecce Baroque is bred on the exact same cross as GISW Gomo and GSW Lost Raven and on a similar cross to the late Laoban. B-MMM Stables (KY)

He is bred to adapt, as his half-brother Flexibility (Bluegrass Cat) won the GIII Jerome S., while his multiple Grade III-winning second dam Santa Catalina (Cure the Blues) was responsible for GI Pimlico Special H. hero Golden Missile (A.P. 2nd-HSN, ¥9,680,000 ($90k), Maiden, 3yo, 1800m
KARNTNER (c, 3, Street Sense–Sweet Dreams, by Candy Ride {Arg}), a $210K KEENOV weanling, had the misfortune of catching rain-affected surfaces in his first two trips postward and exits a respectable fifth over course and distance June 13. His dam, multiple stakes-placed on synthetic tracks, is out of a daughter of turf SW/GSP Cat Charmer (Storm Cat), the dam of three-time winning turf mare Strike Charmer (Smart Strike). The deeper female family includes champion Gold Beauty (Mr. Prospector), Dayjur (Danzig), Sky Beauty (Blushing Groom {Fr}) and in-form sire Violence (Medaglia d’Oro). B-Buscar Stables Inc (KY)
