AWESOME RESULT (f, 3, Justify–Blossomed, by Deputy Minister) opened her account with a 2 1/2-length victory over this course and distance last November (see below, SC 7) and makes her return to the races here. Produced by a half-sister to GSW Cinemine (Mining) and to the stakes-winning dam of three-time Japanese winner Ju Taro (Arrogate), Awesome Results is herself kin to 2018 GI Spinaway S. upsetter Sippican Harbor (Orb) and to the Grade III-placed Bodacious Babe (Mineshaft). Jockey Yuga Kawada sits narrowly atop the jockeys' premiership on 66 wins–two better than Christophe Lemaire–and has the assignment Saturday. B-Orpendale/Chelston/Wynatt (KY)

JASPER KRONE (c, 4, Frosted–Fancy Kitten, by Kitten's Joy), a $25,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $90,000 OBS March breezer, has punched well above his weight on this tough circuit and enters off back-to-back scores over easy ground, capped by a victory going 1000 meters at Niigata May 7. The colt's stakes-placed dam was purchased for $10,000 by Machmer Hall in a private transaction at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. Fancy Kitten's current 2-year-old, Ngannou (Mendelssohn), fetched $120,000 at KEESEP last fall and is up to five furlongs in his work at Santa Anita. B-Machmer Hall & Godolphin (KY)

Champagne Room’s First Foal Goes For Two Straight in Japan

In this continuing series, Alan Carasso takes a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are a pair of fillies by American Pharoah for this Saturday running at Hakodate and Hanshin Racecourses. Notable American-breds entered for action Sunday will appear in Saturday's TDN:

GLUTTON LASSIE (f, 3, American Pharoah–Brassy Lassie, by City Zip) was crunched into 7-10 favoritism for a 1400-meter Tokyo maiden last Nov. 20, but never landed a serious blow in seventh and makes her return to the races over the minimum trip Saturday. A $40K Keeneland September yearling, the February-foaled bay was knocked down for $350K at last year's OBS March Sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat. Glutton Lassie is the only live foal to date for her dam, a half-sister to 2015 GIII Jefferson Cup S. winner Saham (Lemon Drop Kid). The filly's stakes-winning third dam Ticket to Houston (Houston) produced GSW/MGISP Runway Model (Petionville), the dam of four-time 'TDN Rising Star' Grade I winner and current Gainesway stallion McKinzie (Street Sense). B-Fleur de Lis Stable & Ashford Stud (KY)

8th-HSN, ¥14,670,000 ($111k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1800m
CORDON ROUGE (f, 3, American Pharoah–Champagne Room, by Broken Vow) just failed at odds-on going this distance on Chukyo debut Mar. 13, but got it right last time, carrying the visiting Damian Lane to a popular four-length graduation at that same track and trip (see below, SC 10). The bay is the first foal from her dam, who secured an Eclipse Award with a victory in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Champagne Room's Japan-based 3-year-old half-brother Fidele (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) was third at Group 3 level last term and is listed-placed this season. B-Northern Farm (KY)

SWEET ZAZ (f, 3, Nyquist–Century Park, by General Meeting) was beaten double digits into 12th when debuting in a nine-furlong turf event in March, but switches to perhaps a more suitable surface for this second go. A $67K Keeneland September buyback, the late April foal is out of the winner of the 2009 GIII Santa Ysabel S. (synthetic) who was purchased by Narvick International out of the 2017 KEENOV sale and produced a filly by Exaggerator in Kentucky that was subsequently exported to Japan. Century Park dropped Sweet Zaz in the Bluegrass and has also since been sent to Japan, where she foaled a colt from the first crop of GII Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner Four Wheel Drive (American Pharoah) Mar. 25. 5th-CKO, ¥13,400,000 ($100k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
PROTOPOROS (JPN) (c, 2, War Front–Cavale Doree {Fr}, by Sunday Break {Jpn}) debuts in the Carrot Farm green-and-white hoops and is the first foal from his dam, a Group 3 winner in France and third in the 2016 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf for trainer Christophe Ferland. Cavale Doree was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida for 650,000gns ($883,272) with this colt in utero at the 2019 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. B-Northern Racing

 

ART PEPPER (c, 2, Frosted–Tim's Girl, by Broken Vow) cost trainer Hideyuki Mori $150K at KEESEP last year and is out of an unraced full-sister to Grade I-placed juvenile filly Broken Spell–the dam of SW Lord Dragon (Oxbow)–and a half-sister to recent Horseshoe Indianapolis S. winner Heavenly Hellos (Overanalyze). The gray colt's third dam Be a Prospector (Mr. Prospector), a half-sister to the important sire Belong to Me, produced MGSW Away (Dixieland Band), the dam of MGSW/GISP Eight Belles (Unbridled's Song). BEYOND THE FATHER (JPN) (c, 2, Curlin–Galileo's Song {Jpn}, by Galileo {Ire}), twice graded-placed on the grass for Dell Ridge Farm and Chad Brown, sold for $1 million with this foal in utero at the 2018 Keeneland November sale. Galileo's Song is out of Song to Remember (Storm Cat), who fetched $1.6 million in foal to Tiznow at Fasig-Tipton November in 2006 not long after her daughter Magnificent Song (Unbridled's Song) came from last to win the GI Garden City Breeders' Cup S. in New York. Top jockey Mirco Demuro sees fit to ride. B-Shimokobe Farm

7th-NII, ¥9,680,000 ($88k), Maiden, 3yo, 1200m
SCATTER SEED (JPN) (f, 3, Uncle Mo–Scatladybdancing, by Scat Daddy), a distant sixth on Tokyo debut in a single juvenile appearance, cut back in trip for a course-and-distance test and just missed when last seen July 24. The filly's stakes-placed dam, a full-sister to SW Ultima D, was acquired for $390K with the filly in utero at KEENOV in 2017. This is the extended female family of G1SW and successful young sire No Nay Never (Scat Daddy). B-Oiwake Farm

The filly hails from an active female family, as Include Betty is the half-sister to Gagetown (Exaggerator), narrow winner of the June 4 Prairie Mile and a latest third in the Iowa Derby July 2. The third dam includes GISW My Trusty Cat (Tale of the Cat) and GSP Entrustment (Forestry). B-Northern Racing

8th-HAK, ¥14,360,000 ($131k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 2000mT
AIR SAGE (c, 3, Point of Entry–Nokaze, by Empire Maker), a half-brother to GSW and $1.6-million earner Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), made an enormous debut impression when scoring over this trip at Chukyo Jan. 5 (see below, gate 10) before finishing a close fifth when tried over 2400 meters Feb. 7. Produced by a half-sister to SW Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro) and from the deeper female family of Devil's Bag and Saint Ballado, Air Sage will be ridden by Christophe Lemaire, who currently holds a 22-win lead atop the JRA jockeys' premiership.
