Gun Runner Gets First Japanese, Turf Winner

GRAN APLAUSO (c, 2, Gun Runner–Fiducia {SW & GSP-Jpn, $1,425,976}, by Medaglia d'Oro) became the fourth winner for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}) and his first on the turf with a smooth success on career debut. Drawn widest in a field of 16, the homebred raced deep on the course, but tugged his way up into second entering the turn. Poised to strike at the quarter pole, he was roused to the front outside the 200-meter mark and kept on well to score by a measured length as the 16-5 third betting favorite. Gran Aplauso is the first foal from his dam, a listed winner and narrowly beaten in the G3 Ibis Summer Dash over five furlongs. Fiducia is a daughter of North Hills's Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), Japan's champion older mare of 2003 and winner of the country's two major six-furlong sprints–the Takamatsunomiya Kinen and the Sprinters' S.–before they were recognized as international Group 1 events. Believe's other produce include MSW & MGSP multi-millionaire Faridat (Kingmambo) and GSW & G1SP Gendarme (Kitten's Joy). Third dam Great Christine (Danzig) was a half-sister to Horse of the Year Lady's Secret (Secretariat). Fiducia is the dam of a yearling colt by Uncle Mo and a filly by American Pharoah foaled Jan. 28. Gran Aplauso could be a candidate for the G3 Hakodate Nisai S. July 17. Sunday’s Racing Insights: Juvenile Colts Out in Full Force

A Winchell Thoroughbreds/Steve Asmussen coupled entry receive a tepid 3-1 morning line nod in this salty looking special weight. Totalizer (Candy Ride {Arg}) is out of GSP Taxable (Tapit) from the family of GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Summerly (Summer Squall). Chileno (Gun Runner), co-owned with co-breeder Three Chimneys, was a $375,000 Keeneland September yearling. His MG1SW dam Wapi (Chi) (Scat Daddy) was Chile's champion 3-year-old filly of 2016. Wapi's now 3-year-old Curlin colt, who remains unraced, was the $1.5-million co-topper at FTSAUG '19. This same team campaigned Horse of the Year and promising freshman sire Gun Runner.

Dale Romans also has two runners. Officer Nick (Frosted), a $225,000 KEESEP yearling, is out of a full-sister to GI Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic heroine Unrivaled Belle (Unbridled's Song), who in turn produced brilliant champion Unique Bella (Tapit). Romans's other representative Southern Sense (Street Sense) cost $65,000 at the same auction, and is out of a half-sister to Mutakddim from a super deep female family.

Almuahed (Candy Ride {Arg}) was a $110,000 KEESEP RNA turned $180,000 OBS April grad off a :21 3/5 breeze. His second dam is GISW Dream of Summer (Siberian Summer), making his dam a half to highest-level winners Creative Cause (Giant's Causeway) and Vexatious (Giant's Causeway) as well as GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby hero Destin (Giant's Causeway).

Condemn (Medaglia d'Oro) is from a typically deep family developed by his owner/breeders Adele Dilschneider and Claiborne Farm. The colt's second dam is MGSW/MGISP Cheery (Distorted Humor), the dam of two-turn MGISW Elate (Medaglia d'Oro). TJCIS PPs

Robert and Lawana Low's Uninvited Guest (Distorted Humor) was a $400,000 Keeneland September yearling out of SW and GSP Interrupted (Broken Vow), who is a half to 2019 GI TVG Pacific Classic S. hero Higher Power (Medaglia d'Oro) and MGSW sire Alternation (Distorted Humor). Summer Wind Equine paid $575,000 for Interrupted at the 2018 Keeneland November sale while she was carrying Uninvited Guest. Down Cold (Mastery) is half to speedy GI Breeders' Cup Sprint and G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen winner Secret Circle (Eddington). He was a $35,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $125,000 OBS April juvenile following a steady :10 2/5 breeze with a solid gallop out. Second Winner for Gun Runner

2nd-Gulfstream, $60,000, Msw, 5-14, 2yo, 5f, :58.40, ft, 2 3/4 lengths.
PAPPACAP (c, 2, Gun Runner–Pappascat {GSP, $165,762}, by Scat Daddy) was off as the even-money favorite to become the second winner for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}) at first asking. He broke on top in this eight-horse affair and was pushed along through an opening quarter in :22.71. The bay began to shake clear off the turn, had a three-length advantage in the stretch and had the final margin cut to 2 3/4 lengths by Merlin (Brethren). Gun Runner Gets First Winner at Churchill

Well-bred Red Run (Gun Runner) ran to 3-5 backing Sunday in the Churchill Downs slop to become the first winner for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}). Sporting the same Winchell silks that near $16-million earner and fellow Steve Asmussen pupil Gun Runner did, the chestnut broke in midpack and was ridden along to track from third as second timer Trebbiano (Connect) showed the way. One of several pursuers revving up behind the pacesetter heading for home, Red Run mounted his three-wide bid in upper stretch and outkicked a stubborn Trebbiano late to prevail by 1 3/4 lengths in :59.22. A very green Woodline (Gun Runner) rounded out the trifecta.

Red Run is the first foal out of an unraced full-sister to his connections' champion 3-year-old filly and GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Untapable (Tapit), as well as GISW Paddy O'Prado (El Prado {Ire}). Dam Red House produced another Gun Runner colt last March and was bred back to Copper Bullet for 2021.

Gun Runner, the 2017 Horse of the Year who stands at Three Chimneys–which co-campaigned him–was the leading first-crop sire by yearling average last year at $246,413. He has also led freshmen with more than one sold by 2-year-old sales average this term ($372,000), including a $1.7-million colt at Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream and an $850,000 colt at OBS April.
