No Nay Mets Books Ascot Ticket With Inaugural Royal Palm Juvenile Win

A recent RNA out of the OBS April Sale, No Nay Mets booked his ticket to Royal Ascot with a win Saturday in the inaugural Royal Palm Juvenile. Facing a field of mostly first-time starters, the son of Ireland-based No Nay Never was given only a mild 10-1 shot but broke right to the front from an outside gate under Luca Panici. With the best speed of the group, he out-sprinted his rivals to clear into the far turn through a half in :45.44 and only pulled further away from there, hitting the wire going away. With the win, No Nay Mets earned an automatic start into one of the six 2-year-old races at this year's Royal Ascot meet happening from Jun. 20-24 and his connections also earned a $25,000 travel stipend.

“He's a pretty nifty colt,” said trainer George Weaver. “He was on a rushed schedule for this. There's no reason not to go over there. It's a lot of fun, and he's got as good a chance as anybody.”

The first and to date only foal out of group-stakes winner Etoile, herself a full-sister to GSW/MG1SP Ancient Rome, No Nay Mets traces back to G1 Investec Epsom Derby winner Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and GSW/G1SP Dawn Patrol (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). This is also the extended family of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Pizza Bianca (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

FTBOA Names 2022 Champions

Simplification (Not This Time) was named the 2022 Florida-bred Horse of the Year in a vote by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association board of directors.

Bred by France Weiner and her late husband Irwin Weiner, Simplification, who was also named the 2022 Florida-bred Champion 3-Year-Old Colt, was recognized for his victories in the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. in April and in the Mucho Macho Man S. in January, both at Gulfstream. He also produced several other graded-stakes performances in 2022 including a fourth-place finish in the GI Kentucky Derby. Simplification also helped his dam, Simply Confection (Candy Ride {Arg}), take home honors as the 2022 FTBOA Broodmare of the Year.

The 2022 FTBOA Florida Breeder of the Year and Leading Owner by Florida-bred Earnings award went to Arindel, who led all breeders from the Sunshine State with $3,050,911 in Florida-bred earnings.

Khozan (Distorted Humor) was named the 2022 Florida Stallion of the Year for the third consecutive year with progeny earnings of $4,513,950.

Irad Ortiz, Jr. And Saffie Joseph, Jr. Claim Gulfstream Meet Titles

Irad Ortiz Jr. finished off the Championship Meet at Gulfstream Park in style Saturday, piloting Forte to a victory in Saturday's GI Curlin Florida Derby to tally his sixth winner on the day alone.

With three more winning rides on Sunday's closing day program, Ortiz finished the Championship Meet with 128 victories to reclaim the jockey title for the winter Thoroughbred session.

Ortiz ran away with this year's title while finishing 57 wins ahead of the Luis Saez, who finished three wins ahead of third-place Jose Ortiz.

“I've had big support from the owners and trainers. They support me. Thanks to them. If I don't have their help, I can't do anything,” Irad Ortiz Jr. said Sunday. “At the same time, my agent Steve (Rushing) has done a great job. He does everything he can, every single day to get horses for me. I thank God for keeping me healthy and being available to do this every single day.”

Ortiz, who had a 28% strike rate during the Championship Meet, also led the purses-won standings with $7.39 million.

“I try to prepare as much as I can for every horse, every day. I just like to prepare myself to get to know every single horse to get an advantage, that's important,” Ortiz said.

Saffie Joseph Jr. made a successful title defense of the Championship Meet by a 47-41 margin over Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.

“Last year was huge because it was the first time we had done it. I think this one even means more to comeback and prove it again. It gives the whole team a lot of confidence,” Joseph said. “I have a lot of appreciation for all the owners' support. It's a blessing from God.”

Keeping his training title didn't come easy.

“Todd really gave us a fight for this. Last year, we always had the momentum. This year, we weren't separated by more than two wins most of the time. He went ahead by two in mid-February.  After that we got some momentum and were able to hold him off. It mean's a lot.”

Florida Derby Time Adjusted

After reviewing the race, Equibase has adjusted the final time for Saturday's GI Florida Derby, won by Forte (Violence). The original time of 1:48.51 has been changed to 1:49.37.

In a statement released Sunday by Equibase, the company said that the finish line beam may have been tripped before the horses reached the finish line.

Prior to Equibase recognizing the mistake, the error was caught by the Beyer speed figure team. Initially, Forte was credited with a 98 Beyer figure. That number was lowered to a 95.

“The time is almost a full second wrong and I have no idea why,” said Beyer associate Randy Moss.

After doing their own review of the race, the Beyer team came up with a final time of 1:49.39. Moss said questions were raised about the Equibase time because it had the field covering the final eighth of a mile in 12:16 seconds, which seemed unrealistically fast. That, Moss said, drew the attention of Craig Milkowski from TimeformUS. He reached out to Moss and both went over the race. With the recalculated final time, Forte's last furlong went in 13.02. Equibase has also adjusted the time for the final furlong to 13:02.

“We timed it four different times, four different ways and got within three-one hundredths of a second every time,” Moss said.

Moss added that on first inspection it appeared that Forte's figure was significantly higher.

“Initially, we looked at the track variant and had the figure coming up as 104,” Moss said. “Andy (Beyer) and Mark (Hopkins) asked me what did I think. I said that the fig is the fig. They said there was no way those horse who finished behind Forte could have all run that fast. So they decided to make it a 98. As it turns out, they were right because the time was wrong.”
