TAA Well Represented Over Derby Prep Weekend

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) will be featured on two big race days at Gulfstream Park and Turfway Park Saturday to promote aftercare awareness on the undercard of the GIII Jeff Ruby Steaks and the GI Curlin Florida Derby. A presentation of a TAA blanket and swag bag to the winning connections will be made following the running of each race. Gulfstream's Race 2 presented by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will go off at 11:59 a.m. A limited number of patrons will be in attendance for the action-packed Florida Derby day at Gulfstream. Aftercare support will continue under new ownership at Turfway, where the TAA is set to present race 3 at 2:10 p.m. prior to the 50th running of the Jeff Ruby Steaks. Due to construction in preparation for the new racing and gambling property, Turfway is not permitted to host fans for live racing at this time.

“The TAA is grateful to both Gulfstream and Turfway Park for their commitment to include the TAA during such exciting race days,” said Stacie Clark, TAA Operations Consultant. “Race presentations help the TAA fulfill its mission to spread awareness of accredited Thoroughbred aftercare which facilitates the funding of our 81 accredited organizations.”

Derby March for Greatest Honour

Greatest Honour (Tapit) rides a three-race win streak heading into the GI Curlin Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, however, the Courtlandt Farm homebred certainly hasn't scared anyone away as 10 other sophomores have also signed on in Saturday's Classic prep. A large part of the draw is that the Florida Derby will offer 170 qualifying points for the May 1 Kentucky Derby on a 100-40-20-10 basis. The 1 1/8-mile test has produced the winners of 60 Triple Crown events.

The imposing bay kicked off his career with a trio of on-the-board finishes in New York, including a close-up head second behind Florida Derby rival Known Agenda (Curlin)–a last out 11-length winner in a Gulfstream optional claimer Feb. 26–at Aqueduct in November before capping the season with a win going 8 1/2 furlongs at Gulfstream Dec. 26. Sent off the second betting choice in the Jan. 30 GIII Holy Bull S., he employed his customary off-the-pace tactics to score by an eye-catching 5 3/4 lengths.

Sent off at even choice in the GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S., the Shug McGaughey trainee found himself a bit farther back than expected early, but employed his typical late-charging style to win by 1 1/2 lengths over the speedy Drain the Clock (Maclean's Music).

“In the Fountain of Youth, the horse on the lead, Drain The Clock, who I think is a very, very good horse, kind of opened up, leaving the quarter pole. I thought [even if our horse] would kick in, we're going to have a hard time catching him but he caught him.”

He continued, “I think he was doing–three times–[something] he wasn't wanting to do, going a mile and a sixteenth over a speed-favoring track. And he was able to catch up all three times against pretty good company. So, I am looking forward to getting him stretched out where maybe in the Florida Derby he'll be laying like he was in the Holy Bull and not as far back as he was in the Fountain of Youth.”

In his most recent work, Greatest Honour covered four furlongs, while in company, in :50.40 (12/27) at Payson Park Mar. 21 (McGaughey's view on the work).

McGaughey, who annexed his first Run for the Roses with Orb in 2013, believes the added distance will benefit his charge.

“He's a big, tall horse. He has grown a little over the winter,” McGaughey said. “So, that will be fun watching him develop. His pedigree says he'll run as far as you want him to run. With his stride, I don't think he's a horse with a quick turn of foot, but when he gets going, he covers so much ground that he catches up in a hurry.”

Drawn in post 7 Saturday, the colt will be partnered by Jose Ortiz, who was aboard for four of the colt's prior starts, including his two most recent wins.

Looking to derail Greatest Honour's Derby dreams is SF Racing LLC, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, Golconda Stables, Siena Farm LLC and Robert Masterson's Spielberg (Union Rags), who will exit post 10 Saturday. Winner of last December's GII Los Alamitos Futurity, the chestnut also finished hit the board in the GI Del Mar Futurity and GI American Pharoah S. In his 2021 debut, Spielberg stumbled at the start of the GIII Robert B. Lewis S. at Santa Anita before finishing fourth behind Baffert-trained winner Medina Spirit (Protonico). Last time out, Spielberg had a messy start but was good enough to finish second–beaten 4 1/4 lengths–by 2-year-old champion Essential Quality (Tapit) in Oaklawn's GIII Southwest S. Feb. 27.

“He's had a lot of races [eight prior starts]. Of all my horses, he's had the most starts. And he's second to [MGSW] Concert Tour [Street Sense] in money earned…He shows up.” said Baffert. “Once in a while, he'll run a flat race. He's doing well and I think he will like the mile and an eighth. He sort of comes running, but he's got to ship well and behave himself. And he's got to break well. He can't break like he did the last time.”

In his last work, the $1 million Keeneland September graduate blistered through five furlongs in :59.40 at Santa Anita Mar. 21.

In contrast to vast experience of Spielberg, Three Chimneys and eFive Racing's Collaborate (Into Mischief) enters the fray with only two prior starts under his belt. Fifth going six furlongs in the Gulfstream slop Feb. 6, the $600,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling purchase rebounded to air by 12 1/2 lengths stretching to a mile Feb. 27, earning TDN Rising Star billing in the process. “It would mean a lot to win,” said trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. “This horse has a lot of ability. What we're asking him is a tall task, but it seems like he has the ability to overcome it.

Stronach 5 Highlighted By Turf Races From Santa Anita, Gulfstream

The Stronach 5 will feature five competitive races from four tracks along with an industry-low 12-percent takeout when it begins at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Continuing to show a strong return on investment, Laurel's eighth race begins this week's Stronach 5, a starter allowance at 1 1/16 mile with a tepid 7-2 favorite in King Mauro trained by Michael Gorham and ridden by Sheldon Russell. The gelding looks for his third consecutive victory after beating $8,000 claimers in his last by four. Trainer John Robb saddles Belfour, 3-1, making his first start since Jan. 17 Belfour owns eight victories at Laurel and Robb has saddled 15 winners at the meet.

The ninth race at Laurel serves as the second leg of the sequence. The maiden $40,000 claimer at six furlongs is a wide-open affair with Country Life Farm's Mosler's Touch entering off a second-place finish last time out against similar company. Trainer Kelly Rubley sends out Likely Choice, who caught a sloppy track last out when finishing seventh. Linda Rice ships Amendment Nineteen in from Belmont for her debut.

The Stronach 5 heads west for the third and fourth legs. Santa Anita's third race, a mile turf event for claiming fillies and mares, has a 2-1 choice in Acoustic Shadow and two horses listed at 5-2 on the morning-line in Amiko Chow and Unbreakable. Acoustic Shadow missed by a head in trying to break her maiden Jan. 15 when claimed for $45,000 by Philip D'Amato. Amiko Chow and Unbreakable finished second and third, respectively, beaten less than a length Feb. 21 against similar claiming company.

Golden Gate's third race, the fourth leg of the sequence, features 3-year-old maiden claimers going five furlongs. Evenerevenworse is the 2-1 choice coming off a second-place finish March 5 at 5 ½ furlongs. Emperor's Fisc (9-2) finished third in his second career start Feb. 13, a race in which the runner-up came back to win.

The Stronach 5 wraps up at Gulfstream with the 10th race, a $35,000 maiden claimer at 1 1/16 mile for 3-year-old fillies. Leading trainer Todd Pletcher sends out Zaffing, who drops a bit in company after finishing fourth on the turf Feb. 28. Short Circuit gets the rail after a third-place finish against similar company last time out. Family Time returns to the turf for trainer Dale Romans.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

America’s Day At The Races Telecast Features Pair Of Kentucky Derby Preps

America's Day at the Races, the acclaimed national telecast produced by the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) in partnership with FOX Sports, will air coverage both Saturday and Sunday showcasing stakes action from Aqueduct Racetrack, Oaklawn Park, Turfway Park and Gulfstream Park.

Presented by America's Best Racing and Claiborne Farm, America's Day at the Races will broadcast Saturday from 2:30-7:30 p.m. Eastern, with coverage for the first half hour on FS2 before shifting to FS1 from 3-4:30 p.m. FS2 will pick up coverage from 4:30-7:30 p.m.

Saturday's broadcast will air stakes action from all four tracks, led by the Grade 1, $750,000 Florida Derby in Race 14 at 6:40 p.m. as one of 10 stakes on Gulfstream's program. The Kentucky Derby prep race, offering 100-40-20-10 qualifying points to the top-four finishers, will see Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert send out Spielberg, the 4-1 second choice on the morning line. The Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity winner is second coming off a runner-up effort to reigning juvenile champion Essential Quality in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park. Greatest Honour was installed as the 6-5 morning-line favorite, entering off wins in the Grade 3 Holy Bull and Grade 2 Fountain of Youth in his last two starts.

Other Gulfstream stakes on the broadcast include the Grade 2, $200,000 Gulfstream Park Oaks in Race 12 at 5:17 p.m. Trainer Kenny McPeek will try to win the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks qualifier [100-40-20-10 points] for the second straight year, looking to follow Swiss Skydiver's 2020 win by sending out Crazy Beautiful for the 1 1/16-mile contest.

Aqueduct will have six of its 10 total stakes shown on the broadcast, highlighting NYRA's New York Claiming Championship series that offers a total of $620,000 in purses. The New York Claiming Championship is open to horses which have started for a prescribed claiming price in 2020-21. The series, each named after some of the most popular claiming horses to run at the Big A, features races at distances ranging from six furlongs to 1 3/8 miles.

The Big A televised stakes will start with the $55,000 Kelly Kip for 4-year-olds and up going six furlongs in Race 4 at 2:50 p.m. Following in order will be the $45,000 Belle Gallantey for older fillies and mares going seven furlongs in Race 5 at 3:20 p.m., the $70,000 Peeping Tom for 4-year-olds and up at 6 1/2 furlongs in Race 6 at 3:52 p.m., the $60,000 More To Tell for older horses going a one-turn mile in Race 7 at 4:24 p.m., the $60,000 Sis City for fillies and mares 4-years-old and up at one mile in Race 8 at 5 p.m., the $75,000 Stud Muffin for older horses competing at a marathon 1 3/8 miles in Race 9 at 5:34 p.m., and the $45,000 Dads Caps in the 10th-race finale for 4-year-olds and up going seven furlongs at 6:10 p.m.

Turfway Park will have three consecutive stakes broadcast, starting with the $150,000 Kentucky Cup Classic for 4-year-olds and up going 1 1/8 miles in Race 9 at 5:10 p.m. Race 10 will offer up the $150,000 Bourbonette Oaks for sophomore fillies going one mile at 5:45 p.m.

Stakes action at the track will conclude with the Grade 3, $250,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks, also a 100-40-20-10 Kentucky Derby qualifier. Hush of a Storm, the winner of the John Battaglia Memorial, is 3-for-3 over the Tapeta track at Turfway. Gretzky the Great, the Nyquist colt, is a Grade 1 winner, having captured the Summer for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse.

Oaklawn will see nine Arkansas-bred 3-year-olds and up going six furlongs in the $150,000 Nodouble Breeders' in Race 10 at 5:52 p.m.

As an additional programing note, live coverage of the Group 1, $12 million Dubai World Cup airs Saturday at noon Eastern on FS1. The field for the 25th renewal of the Dubai World Cup is headlined by multiple graded stakes winner Mystic Guide and will include a collection of standout runners from around the world.

Coverage of the Dubai World Cup undercard, featuring six stakes races, will air live from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on FS1. The 'Golden Hour' telecast, featuring live coverage of the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic and Group 1 Dubai World Cup, will air from noon-1 p.m., Eastern on FS1. Coverage of the Dubai World Cup card on FS1 is presented by Star Guitar.

Sunday's coverage will run from 1:30-6 p.m. on FS2, highlighted by Aqueduct's $100,000 Haynesfield for New York-bred 4-year-olds and up going a one-turn mile.

America's Day at the Races is also broadcast on NYRA's YouTube channel which boasts more than 65,000 subscribers.
