Favored Regal Glory Makes It Look Easy In Inaugural Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf

Sent to post as the 4-5 favorite, Peter Brant's Regal Glory made short work of the inaugural Grade 3, $500,000 Pegasus Filly & Mare Turf at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. The Chad Brown-trained 6-year-old daughter of Animal Kingdom burst into the clear in the stretch and pulled away to win by about three lengths under jockey Jose Ortiz. Regal Glory ran 1 1/16 miles over the firm turf course in 1:41.74.

Alms was game to deny Shifty She for the place, while Gift List checked in fourth.

Though typically near the pace or leading the way in her 16-race career, Regal Glory was last in the field in the early going. Alms and Shifty She were together at the front and led the way through fractions of 23.94 seconds, 48.03 and 1:11.98. Meanwhile, jockey Jose Ortiz guided Regal Glory to the outside on the run up the backstretch and began moving past other horses entering the turn.

“The '5' horse [Gift List] broke really sharp and took my position,” Ortiz said. “He broke a step faster than I did, but they went fast early and I was able to put her outside to follow Luis [Saez] on Sweet Melania – I rode her before and I know she likes the track and decided to follow her. At the three-eighths pole, I had a lot of horse and decided to go around everybody. You could see I had a lot of horse under me. She was just the best in the race.

“I was a little nervous early on because she didn't break that well, which she does sometimes,” trainer Chad Brown said. “Thankfully, Jose knows her so well and she's so good that she was able to overcome it. He rode a beautiful Plan B type of race. It didn't go his way the first part of it. Once he got her down the backside and following a live horse to move him up, it was really good judgment for him and the horse was there for him. I was proud of both of them.”

Godolphin's Alms, trained by Michael Stidham, was second at 19-1. Shifty She was third.

“I had a perfect trip,” said Alm's jockey Joel Rosario. “She dragged me up to the lead and it looked like she gave everything she got, just the winner came right by us. But she ran well. I was on the lead and then that horse came and put a little pressure there but she was fine with it, and then she came back a little bit the last part so that was good.”

Bred in Kentucky by Paul Pompa, Regal Glory is out of the multiple graded stakes-winning More Than Ready mare Mary's Follies. Pompa raced Regal Glory through her 2020 season, acquiring a trio of graded stakes wins on the turf, before Brant picked her up from the 2021 Pompa dispersal. Remaining in Brown's barn, Regal Glory got her first Grade 1 win at the end of 2021, capturing the Matriarch at Del Mar in late November.

Brant purchased Regal Glory in January 2021 for $925,000 at the disbursement sale of the late Paul Pompa's bloodstock. Following the Filly and Mare Turf victory, Brown said Brant might change his plans to retire her.

“She was scheduled to be bred to Into Mischief,” Brown said. “Mr. Brant and I were watching her train this week up at Payson, and we were remarking how sound she is and how great she looks at this age. We left it the morning, let's see how she runs and comes out of this race. It's not out of the question to run her at 6. So I'm going to let him enjoy this win, and we're going to look at the horse, and ultimately he's going to decide.”

Overall, Regal Glory has amassed a record of 10 wins and 4 seconds from 17 starts, for earnings of over $1.5 million.

Heavy Favorite Abaan Extends Win Streak In W.L. McKnight

Heavy favorite Abaan rolled to a 2½ length victory Saturday in the $200,000 W.L. McKnight Stakes (G3) to extend his win streak to three races.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher won the W.L. McKnight for the fourth time.

Abaan, owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Alex Daigneault, was sent off as the 3-2 favorite in the field of 12 after his easy gate-to-wire victory in the 2-mile H. Allen Jerkens on Dec. 26. Under leading rider Luis Saez, Abaan pressed the pace set by King Cause through early fractions of 25.39 seconds, 50.38, 1:15.43. The 5-year-old son of Will Take Charge seized the lead in the third and final turn of the 1½ miles turf race and had no challengers in the stretch and paid $5.00.

Temple was second in the McKnight for the second-straight year. Media Blitz was third.

$200,000 W.L. McKnight (G3) Quotes

Winning trainer Todd Pletcher (Abaan): “We anticipated that he wouldn't be on the lead today, and we felt like he could be effective without having it. It was nice to see him prove that. I think it opens up a lot of options for him in terms of the way he needs to be ridden.”

“He went to the far turn and he was pretty authoritative when he took the lead and spread the race open right there. It looked like he finished with good energy.”

“There's a lot of options. He's been invited to Saudi for the long race there. We nominated to Dubai. We'll see how he comes out of it and I'll talk to [the owners] and we'll come up with a game plan. He's doing so well here at Gulfstream, there's another option or two here. There are some big prizes we'll have to take a look at.”

Winning jockey Luis Saez (Abaan): “We tried to break from there and see if someone took the lead, we could be in the perfect spot. Everything worked out pretty great, like the plan. When we came to the top of the stretch, he just took off.”

Pricey Midnight Storm Colt a Debut Winner at Gulfstream

4th-Gulfstream, $53,000, Msw, 1-29, 3yo, 7f, 1:24.53, ft, 1 1/4 lengths.
SWING SHIFT (c, 3, Midnight Storm–Tasunke, by Indian Charlie) and GIII Iroquois S. fourth Bourbon Heist (Practical Joke) were nigh inseparable by the betting public up until the gates opened for the former's career debut; the latter ultimately ending up the slimmest of 5-2 favorites. With first-time Lasix for his unveiling, Swing Shift broke fast from the outside slot and took command going up the backstretch with a stubborn challenger in stablemate and fellow firster Congressman (Constitution) glued to his outside. Dueling through fractions of :22.92 and :46.73 into the far turn, last year's $550,000 OBS April procurement (:20 4/5) turned his longtime shadow away late while drifting in the lane and held off fast-closing charges led by Bourbon Heist to graduate by 1 1/4 length. It was another neck back to Positive Review (Unified), who was forced to steady in mid stretch. The winner is his dam's second foal and second winner as well as being her final reported offspring when Tasunke came up barren in 2020 after visiting Mshawish. Swing Shift was the most expensive of 30 juveniles to switch hands by Midnight Storm in the ring last year. The result stood after a stewards inquiry and a trainer objection from Saffie Joseph, Jr. (trainer of Positive Review) involving the stretch run. Sales history: $180,000 Ylg '20 KEESEP; $550,000 2yo '21 OBSAPR. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $31,800. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Beautiful Lover Gets Picture-Perfect Trip Under Rosario To Nab La Prevoyante

Moyglare Stud Farm's Beautiful Lover benefitted from a perfect trip engineered by jockey Joel Rosario in Saturday's Grade 3 La Prevoyante Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. Off as the 4-1 second choice, Beautiful Lover was covered up along the rail early, and guided into the clear in the stretch to run down even-money favorite Always Shopping by a head on the wire. It was the first graded stakes win for the 6-year-old daughter of Arch, who completed 1 1/2 miles over the firm turf course in 2:30.49.

Winning trainer Christophe Clement also saddled the second-place finisher, Sorrel. Always Shopping was beaten a neck in third.

The La Prevoyante for older fillies and mares going 1 1/2 miles on turf was the first of the seven graded stakes on the program of the sixth running of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational.

“It was a perfect trip,” said Rosario. “Turning for home, I got a chance to come out, and that looks like the winning move right there. It's a very good way to start the day.”

Always Shopping led through opening splits of 24.76 seconds, 50.50 and 1:16.13. Beautiful Love was always near the pace, stayed patient when Scarabea moved up to challenge Always Shopping in the stretch and pounced as the leaders approached the wire.

Bred in Florida by Thomas Coleman, Beautiful Lover is out of the Quiet American mare American Skipper, making her a half-brother to millionaire Zivo. She commanded $475,000 at the 2018 OBS April sale as a 2-year-old. Racing for Paul Pompa and Gary Tolchin under the tutelage of Chad Brown, Beautiful Lover won a listed stakes and was twice graded-placed before she returned to the sales ring for the 2021 Keeneland January sale.

Picked up for $650,000 by Moyglare and sent to Clement's barn, Beautiful Lover won an allowance race and was twice stakes-placed in 2021. The La Prevoyante, her first start of 2022, improves the mare's overall resume to 5-4-2 from 16 starts for earnings of over $440,000.

“We always felt she was good enough to win a graded stakes somewhere,” Clement said. “I'm delighted she's done it now. This is fun, but I won that race in I think my first year or second year (in 1998 with Corretta). She had a dream trip by Joel Rosario, which was great. He was riding the rail all the way.”
