Charge It Wins Easily In Return To The Races

CHARGE IT (c, 4, Tapit–I'll Take Charge, by Indian Charlie), a 'TDN Rising Star' not seen since his 23-length romp in the GIII Dwyer S. at Belmont last July, was hammered into 1-5 favoritism for his return to the races Sunday. Eased out of the gate, he found himself four wide into the clubhouse turn before taking back to race fourth in the top flight. Led through the half by Laughing Boy (Distorted Humor), the grey began to inch up on the front pair up the backstretch under a motionless Luis Saez. Two wide for the lead as the field spun for home, Charge It easily cleared off and, under minimal urging, cruised home to defeat Vittorio (Ghostzapper) by 1 1/2 lengths. Out of a daughter of prolific broodmare Take Charge Lady, I'll Take Charge is a half-sister to champion 3-year-old colt Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song), GISW Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy), GISW As Time Goes By (American Pharoah), and to the dam of champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway) and MGISW Omaha Beach (War Front). Rocket Can Gives Red Hot Into Mischief Win in Holy Bull

A major stepping stone to the GI Curlin Florida Derby, Saturday's Holy Bull appeared on paper at least, to be a competitive affair. Leading the fray was two-time winner Cyclone Mischief (Into Mischief), a $450,000 KEESEP purchase, trained by Dale Romans. Also gaining respect at the window at 5-2 was Frank Fletcher's Rocket Can, who drew the less-than-ideal outside draw in the 8 1/2-furlong test. Hustled along off the blocks and unable to make any real headway, he was fanned out several paths wide going into the first turn as Mr Bob (Practical Joke) took control. Eagerly pulling Tyler Gaffalione along during a solid opening quarter, Cyclone Mischief found himself boxed as Rocket Can loomed to his outside. As the pacesetter continued to show the way through a :48.84 half, Rocket Can continued to bide his time in fourth, although only about two lengths behind the pace. Picking up the tempo around the far turn, Rocket Can soon pushed his head in front approaching the home turn, responded to a swift right-handed reminder by Alvarado in early stretch and dug in late as stable-mate Shadow Dragon (Army Mule) closed from behind to grab the runner-up spot, only 3/4 of a length adrift of the winner. West Coast Cowboy (West Coast) was a clear third. Favored Cyclone Mischief faded to seventh.

“The horse broke sharp, and I hustled out of there just to make sure I'm forwardly placed and he was there for me,” explained Alvarado. “I couldn't really save much ground the first part because everybody had the same idea to get out of there running. I ended up being a little bit wide, but he was very kind. He was nice and relaxed the whole way around, so I was very pleased with what I had under me. By the three-eighths pole I started picking it up little by little knowing that it's the first wire. I had a great feeling going all the way around.”

Rocket Can finished off the board in a pair of sprints at Saratoga last summer before stretching out around to turns to graduate at Churchill Downs Oct. 30. The colt rounded out his juvenile campaign with a close up second-place finish in a 1 1/16-mile optional claiming allowance at Churchill Downs Nov. 26.

“It was a little worrisome on the first turn-he was four-wide,” said Mott. “It's a short run to the first turn and he had the outside post. He was four-wide in the first turn and then three-wide. The good part about all that is you have a clear trip. You're running farther than everyone else, but he got a nice clean trip and maybe that's what he needed today.”

Asked whether either of his top two finishers might contest th Mar. 4 GII Fountain of Youth S., he added, “I think we'd want to do that with one of them, for sure.”

Pedigree Notes:
The third graded winner of Saturday and the 62nd graded winner for his sire, Rocket Can is out of the win-less Tension, who is out of Dual Grade I winning Tough Tiz's Sis (Tiznow). After dropping a City of Light colt in 2021, the half-sister to GSW and GISP Tiz Midnight (Midnight Lute) was barren last season and was bred back to Collected.

Tapit Trice Earns ‘Rising Star’ Nod At Gulfstream

Unveiled at Aqueduct Nov. 6, Tapit Trice (Tapit) endured a wide trip throughout and was coming on late but had to settle for third just 2 1/2 lengths off the winner. It would be the only time so far that the grey son of Tapit did not find the winner's circle as he rebounded with a narrow victory over a muddy but sealed track Dec. 17 before flying south to Gulfstream to earn his 'TDN Rising Star' nod with an eight-length romp Saturday.

Racing with Lasix for the first time, the $1,300,000 Keeneland September yearling got away evenly from the inside gate but was outsprinted early and switched outside by jockey Luis Saez to race in the clear up the backstretch. Fourth in a tightly-bunched field, the grey held his ground behind a pair of dueling leaders up front, staying wide out on the track as the opening quarter went in :24.25. Up into third by the time the leaders began to swing around the far turn, Tapit Trice surged forward under a hand ride past the quarter pole to join his stablemate, the 4-5 favorite Shesterkin (Violence), for the lead. The pair matched strides for only a few yards before Tapit Trice went on with it into the final furlong, running up the score late for the clear victory as the 6-5 second choice.

The 51st 'Rising Star' for prolific sire Tapit, Tapit Trice is out of a graded-stakes placed half-sister to MGISW Jaywalk (Cross Traffic). Danzatrice returned to Tapit twice more since producing Tapit Trice, producing back-to-back full-sisters in 2021 and 2022 with the 2-year-old being a $1,100,000 purchase by Whisper Hill Farm at last year's Keeneland September Sale. Danzatrice is due back to Tapit for yet another full-sibling in 2023.

Into Mischief’s General Jim Sweeps to Swale Win

Charting a consistent if unremarkable course heading into Saturday's GIII Claiborne Swale S. at Gulfstream, Courtlandt Farms' General Jim (Into Mischief) turned things up a notch, exploding from off the pace to collar favored Super Chow (Lord Nelson) late en route to a one-length score. Sent off the 8-5 second choice behind 4-5 choice Super Chow, already a three-time stakes winner, the Shug McGaughey trainee broke awkwardly from his inside draw, but was quickly straightened out by regular pilot Luis Saez as Super Chow ran up to contest the early pace with Two of a Kind (Overanalyze). As the duo cut out a legitimate opening quarter in :22.69, Super Chow spurted clear of Two of a Kind, and was three lengths ahead of that rival through a :45.31 half. Meanwhile, General Jim moved up on even terms with Two of a Kind around the 5/16ths, but began to unfurl his long legs approaching the quarter pole. Gaining quickly on a wide-cornering Super Chow turning for home, the $850,000 Keeneland September graduate bore down on the pacesetter in the final furlong, took over late to earn his first taste of black-type by a length. Super Chow was a clear second over Two of a Kind.

“Definitely the race came up perfect for him,” said Saez. “We know we have plenty of speed. We just tried to break from there running and find a great spot. We had a pretty good trip and, man, when we came to the top of the stretch, I had a lot of horse and he just kept going.”

In regard to getting blinkers for the first time Saturday, Saez added, “I know Mr. Shug was saying he was going to put on the blinkers, and we've been working in the morning with the blinkers, and he was magnificent. Today, the plan was to have a target in front and just wait to the end and let him run. He did it by himself, so it was pretty good.”

According to McGaughey, the Mar. 4 GII Fountain of Youth S. “is not out of the question.”

“He's developing now,” he said. “He's grown and kind of filled out. He's gained weight. He's got a little bit more weight to go, so I'm going to let him do that.”

Third in his career bow sprinting six panels on the dirt at Saratoga last August, General Jim appreciated the extra yardage and the move to the turf next time, scoring by a neck going 8 1/5 furlongs in September. Back in the winner's circle following a Keeneland allowance in October, he finished third in the one-mile Central Park S. at the Big A Nov. 26 before coming home fourth last time in Gulfstream's Mucho Macho Man S. Jan. 1.

Pedigree wise, General Jim has a lot going for him, a point underscored by his $850,000 price tag at the 2021 Keeneland September. By the nation's leading sire Into Mischief, he is out of a SP Inspired by Grace (Curlin), who is a full-sister to GI Mother Goose S. heroine Off The Tracks and a half to dual graded stakes winner Concord Point (Tapit). Adding further padding to the page, granddam Harve de Grace (Boston Harbor) is a half to MGSW and GISP Tasha's Miracle (Harlan's Holiday). The 2021 foal out of the 12-year-old dam subsequently died, however, she produced a filly by Authentic last season and was bred back to the champion.
