Seven-Figure Justify Colt Debuts on FOY Undercard

Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg and Gandharvi LLC's ILLUSTRATED (Justify) was led out unsold when bidding stalled out at $290,000 at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. The blaze-faced bay made the decision to retain him look that much better when selling for $1.1 million at last year's Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat despite jumping the shadows of the sixteenth pole and of floodlights around the area of the finish line. His GI Spinaway S.-winning dam Appealing Zophie (Successful Appeal) was purchased by My Meadowview for $1.1 million at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton November Sale and went on to produce GI Belmont S. hero and young stallion Tapwrit (Tapit), MGSW & GISP Ride a Comet (Candy Ride {Arg})–who carried the silks of Len Riggio's operation–and SW & 'TDN Rising Star' Inject (Frosted). Carrying a full-sister to Tapwrit, Appealing Zophie was hammered down to Barronstown Stud for $1.2 million at FTKNOV in 2018. Having amassed a worktab dotted with bullet drills, Illustrated is the 5-2 favorite from gate 10 and has the services of Luis Saez. Illustrated will be opposed by LNJ Foxwoods' Scotland (Good Magic), a daughter of Grade III winner and Grade I-placed Gemswick Park (Speightstown), who was acquired for $675,000 on behalf of the Roth family at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton February Sale. The chestnut gelding also has a series of strong works under his belt, including five furlongs from the gate at Payson Park in 1:01 2/5 (1/9) Feb. 17. TJCIS PPs

RULE BREAKER (Into Mischief) was one of four horses–two by this sire–to fetch $1 million or better at last year's OBS March Sale after hammering for that price to Spendthrift, the BSW/Crow Colts' Group and Broman after a :10 1/5 breeze. The New York bred is the latest foal to the races for the Bromans' multiple Grade I winner Artemis Agrotera (Fusaichi Pegasus), whose son Chestertown (Tapit) topped the 2019 March Sale on a bid of $2 million. Forte Named 7-5 Morning-Line Favorite For Fountain Of Youth

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's Forte (Violence) completed his preparation for his 2023 debut in next Saturday's GII Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park after breezing five furlongs in 1:01.99 Saturday morning at Palm Beach Downs.

“Last week was the work we wanted to make sure that we were on target,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “We got a good strong work into him. We got a good work today, but after last week, we weren't looking for him to do too much. We're right on schedule and think we are where we want to be.”

The 2022 2-year-old champion is the 7-5 morning-line favorite for the 1 1/16-mile stakes for sophomores, which will headline a program with nine stakes, including eight graded stakes, worth $1.85 Million in purses.

“He seems to be thriving right now,” Pletcher continued before Forte drew the No. 4 post position Saturday afternoon. “I hope he can continue on that trajectory. We're super pleased with the way he's coming into the race.”

“With that type of seasoning, I'm very comfortable with two races leading up, hopefully, to the Derby,” Pletcher said. “We've approached it from various angles and felt like this was the right path for him. So far everything has been going to plan. Hopefully, it continues to do that.”

Weekly Stewards And Commissions Rulings, Feb. 7-13

Every week, the TDN publishes a roundup of key official rulings from the primary tracks within the four major racing jurisdictions of California, New York, Florida and Kentucky.

Here's a primer on how each of these jurisdictions adjudicates different offenses, what they make public (or not) and where.

With the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) having gone into effect on July 1, the TDN will also post a roundup of the relevant HISA-related rulings from the same week.

California

Violation: Medication violation

Explainer: Trainer Lorenzo Ruiz, who started the horse Manitowish, who finished third in the second race on Sept. 10, 2022, at Del Mar Race Track is fined $500.00 and assessed one half (1/2) point in accordance with California Horse Racing Rule #1843.4(a) (Multiple Medication Violations – Expires 02/10/24) pursuant to California Horse Racing Board Rule #1887(a) (Trainer or Owner to Insure Condition of Horse) for violation of California Horse Racing Board Rule #1843(a)(b)(d) (Medication, Drugs and Other Substances and Rule #1843.1(b) (Prohibited Drug Substances – Phenylbutazone [Class 4]).

Violation: Careless riding

Explainer: Jockey Diego Herrera, who rode Lasmuigh in the third race at Santa Anita Park on Feb. 10, 2023, is suspended for 3 racing days (Feb. 18, 19 and 20, 2023) for failure to make the proper effort to maintain a straight course in the stretch, causing interference. This constitutes a violation of California Horse Racing Board rule #1699 (Riding Rules – careless riding).

Saturday Insights: Santa Anita Saves The Best For Last

Breaking from the far outside post in the nightcap at the Great Race Place, NUCLEAR (Justify) looks to start earning back some of his $1,550,000 price tag with a turf debut for trainer John Sadler. Out of GIII Schuylerville S. runner-up True Feelings (Latent Heat), the colt is a half-brother to SW Feeling Mischief (Into Mischief) and GSP Royal Act (American Pharoah) while Metro, his 2-year-old half-brother by Quality Road, outshone his brother in sales ring by bringing $2.5m from Talla Racing, Woodford Racing, and West Point at last year's Keeneland September Sale. True Feelings is herself a half-sister to the dam of champion 3-year-old filly Wait A While (Maria's Mon). This is also the extended family of dual Eclipse winner and successful sire Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike).

On the complete opposite side of the gate, Precision Strike (Gun Runner) makes the races after bringing $485,000 out of last year's OBS April Sale. He's out of a half-sister to MGISW Winchester (Theatrical {Ire}) and MGSW Middleburg (Lemon Drop Kid) and starts Saturday out of the Doug O'Neill barn. TJCIS PPS

Another son of Gun Runner, St. Elias Stables LLC's ARCH RUNNER, kicks off the day's action in Florida for Todd Pletcher. A $750,000 Fasig-Tipton Fall Yearling Sale grad and a half-brother to MGSW & GISP Proctor's Ledge (Ghostzapper), the colt picks up jockey Luis Saez.

One gate to his inside, Champagne Juan (Justify) has put in a trio of bullet drills for trainer Christophe Clement and owner RT Racing Stable. The $500,000 Keeneland September yearling is a half to the dam of GSW & MGISP Will's Secret (Will Take Charge) while his own dam, GSW & MGISP Well Monied (Maria's Mon), is a half to GSW & GISP Economic Model (Flatter) and GSW Happy American (Runhappy). Rounding out the action in Florida, DREAMLIKE (Gun Runner) was a $975,000 St. Elias Stable and Repole Stable pick up out of Keeneland September in 2021. His dam is a full-sister to champion 3-year-old Untapable as well as a half to GISW Paddy O'Prado (El Prado {Ire}).
