By The Numbers: Gulfstream’s Tapeta Surface Sees Favorites Win At 36 Percent Clip

The 2021-2022 Championship Meet will break new ground when racing is conducted on Gulfstream Park's newly constructed Tapeta surface, as well as on turf and dirt, for the first time during the winter stand that gets underway Friday.

The well-received all-weather surface, which debuted during the inaugural Fall Meet, was constructed upon the advent of year-round racing at the Hallandale Beach racetrack. While the turf course was undergoing renovation during October and November in preparation for the Championship Meet, the Tapeta course proved to be a popular alternative surface to the main track.

Gulfstream is the first racetrack in the Americas to card races on dirt, turf and an all-weather surface. There are no stakes scheduled on the Tapeta course, but the all-weather racing surface will be employed in the event stakes are transferred from the turf course due to inclement conditions.

A total of 143 races were run over the Tapeta course at the recently concluded Fall Meet while producing some expected and perhaps unexpected results.

Horses that favor turf over dirt performed well over the all-weather surface, as widely expected overall. After the first two weeks of racing on Tapeta, horses that had made their most recent starts on turf won 27 of 37 races for a whopping 73 percent. As the meet progressed and horses started running back on Tapeta with no turf races available to them, the percentage of horses going from Turf to the all-weather track dropped to 41 percent.

Favorites had a win-strike rate of 36 percent.

Horses coming from off the pace dominated during the first two weeks of racing on the Tapeta course, winning 22 of 37 races or 59 percent of the races. At meet's end, closers succeeded at a 41-percent clip. After the first two weeks only three horses won on the front end (8 percent), but the speedsters fared better as the meet went along to score at a 17-percent clip by winning 25 of 143 races. Horses pressing or stalking the pace won the remainder of the races.

Saffie Joseph Jr., who dominated the Fall Meet trainer standings, saddled 21 of his 36 winners for victories on the all-weather surface. David Fawkes ranked second with 10 winners with considerably fewer starters.

Edgard Zayas, the Fall Meet champion, led all jockeys with 16 winners on Tapeta. A resurgent Chantal Sutherland, who finished second in the Fall Meet standings, was next with 13 winners.

Gulfstream's Championship Meet kicks off Dec. 3 with a big weekend of stakes races, Claiming Crown, and the popular calendar giveaway.

Friday's 10-race program will be highlighted by two stakes races for 2-year-olds at a mile on the turf in the $75,000 Pulpit and $75,000 Wait a While for fillies.

The Pulpit could attract a full field including Eldon's Prince, a winner this summer and fall of Gulfstream's Armed Forces and Proud Man, Kitodan, who broke his maiden at Gulfstream before finishing ninth in the Hopeful (G1) at Saratoga, Duke of Love, who won his debut at Woodbine for MyRacehorse and trainer Josie Carroll, and Red Danger, second to Howling Wind in the Street Sense at Churchill Downs.

Possibles for the Wait a While include Lemieux, winner last out of the Brethren Juvenile Fillies Stakes, Myfavoritedaughter, fourth in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) in September, Gun Boat, a daughter of War Front trained by Shug McGaughey, and the Saffie Joseph-trained Sister Lou Ann.

Gulfstream's first Saturday of the Championship Meet will be highlighted by the Claiming Crown, a nine-race event offering $810,000 in purses. Along with watching some of racing's most popular, blue-collar horses, fans can get their free 2022 calendar on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. Calendars will be available at the north and south entrances.

Entries for Friday card will be taken Tuesday.

The month of December will also feature four graded stakes on Saturday, Dec. 18, headlined by the $200,000 Fort Lauderdale (G2). Gulfstream's Championship Meet will feature major races every week with spectacular weekend events, including $5.2 million Pegasus World Cup Day Jan. 29, $650,000 Holy Bull Day Feb. 5, $1.7 million Fountain of Youth Day March 5, and the $2.2 million Florida Derby Day April 2.

Gulfstream's concert series will also kick into gear during the Championship Meet in the Sport of Kings Theater with Jefferson Starship Jan. 2, The Wall and Beyond, an Exclusive Pink Floyd Experience Jan. 15, Voices of Classic Soul Jan. 20, and The Immediate Family Feb. 20.

Trainer Fawkes Wins Three, Jockey Sutherland Four At Gulfstream Sunday

Veteran trainer David Fawkes has been forging his own path to the Gulfstream Park winner's circle while saddling five winners from five starters over the past two programs at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

The South Florida mainstay, who has enjoyed much success on the national Thoroughbred stage, scored with his only two starters Saturday and his first three starters on Sunday's card. He swept the first three races on Sunday's nine-race card with Defendant ($3.60), Palomita ($5.60), and Golden Soda ($8.80), respectively. On Saturday, he visited the winner's circle after victories by Wild Irishman ($5.60) in Race 3 and Uptown Queen ($6.40) in Race 8.

“A lot of my horses are coming around – it was their turn – and the Tapeta hasn't hurt me at all. It's been very kind to me,” Fawkes said.

The first four winners in Fawkes five-race winning streak came over Gulfstream's newly installed Tapeta track.

“My horses have come out of running on it in great shape, and I haven't heard one negative about it,” Fawkes said. “I'm thrilled with it. They've done a good job. Congratulations to Gulfstream on that.”

Fawkes, who trained Big Drama, the 2010 Eclipse Award-winning sprinter and Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint victor, and Sheer Drama, a multiple Grade 1 stakes-winning mare, enjoyed a personal best with his three-win day.

“Believe it or not, I had never won three races in one day before,” said Fawkes, who has saddled the winners of 1075 races and $38 million in purses. “I've won two and got beat a nose in a stake. I've had some good days but never won three in one day.”

Fawkes' winning streak came to an end in Sunday's Race 6, when Mony finished off the board.

Chantal Sutherland, who rode Fawkes' first two winners Sunday, added two more victories aboard Jorge Delgado-trained She Nasty ($14) in Race 7 and Royal War ($3.20) in Race 9, continuing to establish herself in Gulfstream's jockey colony.

Sutherland, who moved to South Florida over the winter, also won four races July 24.

Two Weeks Of Tapeta: Closers A Good Bet Over Gulfstream’s New Course

Frontrunners beware! Closers continued to dominate during the second week of action on the newly installed Tapeta track at Gulfstream Park.

Only two frontrunners were successful on the all-weather surface during Week 2, one more than during Week 1. In the 19 races contested over the all-weather surface in Week 2, 11 horses came from mid-pack or farther back to win, following the trend of the first week of Tapeta action, when 11 of 18 winners came from mid-pack or off the pace. The other races were won by horses that stalked or pressed the pace.

Horses with turf experience have also been dominating during the first two weeks of racing on the all-weather surface. During Week 2, all winners went into their races with turf starts on their resumes, whereas there were two winners (one a first-time starter) with no turf races on their records during Week 1.

Chalk bettors were rewarded in 11 of the 18 (61%) races run on Tapeta during Week 1, but favorites were less successful during Week 2, winning 7 of 19 races (35 %). Four of the seven winning favorites ran on last Sunday's program.

After two weeks of racing on Tapeta, 37 races have been run on the all-weather surface. Eighteen favorites came through for their backers. Only 3 frontrunners successfully carried their speed to hit the finish line first, while 22 races were won by horses coming from mid-pack or off the pace. Twelve horses who pressed or stalked the early pace visited the winner's circle. One first-time starter won at first asking, while 28 horses who made their last starts on turf and eight horses who most recently ran on dirt (including off-the-turf starts) won their first races on Tapeta.

Edwin Gonzalez leads all jockeys with six wins on the all-weather surface, including four trips to the winner's circle on horses trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, who is tied with Antonio Sano in the Tapeta training standings with five winners.

Rainbow 6, Super Hi-5 Carryovers Thursday

Live racing returns Thursday with an eight-race program and a first-race post of 12:50 p.m.

Thursday's card features a guaranteed pool in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 of $75,000, a Super Hi-5 carryover of $7,553.77, and three races on Tapeta. The fifth race, an allowance optional claimer at 6 ½ furlongs on the main track, drew a field of six including stakes-placed Restofthestory and Liza Star, and track-record holder Nacho Mama.

King Of Dreams Takes Oakland Park At Gulfstream

King of Dreams ruled supreme in Saturday's $60,000 Oakland Park, rallying from well off the pace to win his debut over Gulfstream Park's newly installed Tapeta racing surface at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

Owned by former Major League Baseball star Victor Martinez's Victoria's Ranch, King of Dreams was coming off a pair of off-the-board finishes in turf stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. The 3-year-old son of Air Force Blue had previously won twice in five starts over Gulfstream's turf course.

King of Dreams' victories were achieved in front-running fashion while racing around two turns, but jockey Emisael Jaramillo employed opposite tactics Saturday for the one-turn 5 ½-furlong overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up over the all-weather surface. The Kentucky-bred 3-year-old settled well behind pacesetter and 4-5 favorite Wind of Change, who was closely stalked by Harry's Ontheloose and Yes I Am Free along the backstretch and far turn. Wind of Change held off Harry's Ontheloose through the stretch but was unable to withstand the far-outside surge of King of Dreams, who prevailed by three-quarters of a length at 11-1.

King of Dreams ran 5 ½ furlongs in 1:06.42. Wind of Change finished second, a neck ahead of Harry's Ontheloose.

Earlier on the program, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. saddled Make It Big for a most promising debut victory in a seven-furlong maiden special weight race for 2-year-olds. Owned by Red Oak Stable, the Florida-bred son of Neolithic scored an 8 ½ -length front-running triumph under Edgard Zayas. The 4-5 favorite was bought at the OBS April sale for $120,000.

Rajiv Maragh is back in winning form after a slow start to the 2021 season. The multiple Grade 1 stakes-winning jockey with more than 1900 wins and $100 million in purses-won visited the winner's circle for the fourth time in the last two days with Free Play ($8.80) in Saturday's Race 9. Maragh, who multiple Grade 1 stakes aboard champion Groupie Doll and Main Sequence, rode three winners on Friday's program.
