Well-Bred Tapit Colt Romps to ‘Rising Stardom’ at Gulfstream

Whisper Hill Farm homebred Charge It (c, 3, Tapit–I'll Take Charge, by Indian Charlie), a hard-fought, narrow second to subsequent GIII Sam F. Davis S. third-place finisher Volcanic (Violence) after a long duel going a one-turn mile on debut at Gulfstream Jan. 8, romped to a 'TDN Rising Star' graduation at Gulfstream Saturday.

He posted a pair of bullets at Todd Pletcher's Palm Beach Downs base since, including a four-furlong move in :47 4/5 (1/19) Feb. 5. Drawn widest of all in post 10 going a mile once again here, the 1-5 favorite cleared the field through an opening quarter in :24.24. Getting some separation three furlongs from home, Charge It hit the top of the lane in complete control and opened daylight from there without being seriously asked by Luis Saez to graduate by a flashy 8 1/2 lengths in 1:35.55. Pletcher stablemate and first-time starter Enough Already (Tapit) completed the exacta for his leading sire.

Charge It was produced by the winning mare I'll Take Charge, a $2.2-million KEESEP yearling purchase by Mandy Pope's operation. The 10-year-old is a daughter of bluehen mare Take Charge Lady (Dehere), who is responsible for champion Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song), GISW Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy), MGSW & GISP As Time Goes By (American Pharoah); and Charming (Seeking the Gold), the dam of champion Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway) and MGISW Omaha Beach (War Front).

Charge It is the 49th 'TDN Rising Star' by perennial leading sire Tapit. The Tapit over Indian Charlie cross is also responsible for the brilliant GISW and fellow 'Rising Star' Flightline.

9th-Gulfstream, $53,000, Msw, 2-12, 3yo, 1m, 1:35.55, ft, 8 1/2 lengths.

Practical Joke Colt Graduates By Many at Gulfstream

6th-Gulfstream, $53,000, (S), Msw, 2-11, 3yo, 6f, 1:10.09, ft, 13 lengths.
KLUGMAN (c, 3, Practical Joke–Polyester, by Tiz Wonderful) debuted with a sound runner-up effort Jan. 7 and was 3-5 to go one better in this spot. Soon in front beneath Rafael Hernandez, the $140,000 OBS October yearling was held together on the turn, was given his cue off the home 'coroner' and dominated from there, running up the score to the tune of a baker's dozen on the wire before galloping out with good energy. The winner is a half-brother to Harpers First Ride (Paynter), GSW, $699,664, and is out of a half-sister to the stakes-winning Sneaky Quiet (Seeking the Gold), third in the 1995 GI Kentucky Oaks. Polyester produced a Bolt d'Oro colt in 2020 and–now owned by Machmer Hall– is due to foal in April to 2020 Horse of the Year Authentic. The Glassmans co-own race two winner One Identity (Broken Vow). Sales history: $140,000 Ylg '20 OBSOCT. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $42,400. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Gulfstream Park: Thursday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Has $550,000 Guarantee

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed for $550,000 Thursday at Gulfstream Park after going unsolved for the seventh straight racing day since a mandatory payout on Pegasus World Cup Day.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 4-9 on Thursday's program with a 12:30 p.m. ET first-race post time. The popular multi-race wager will kick off in Race 4 with a very competitive 7 ½-furlong turf race for $35,000 claimers. Among the leading contenders is Threshold, claimed for $35,000 out of a recent second-place finish by trainer Larry Rivelli, who has a 52-percent strike rates with off-the-claim starters. Former graded-stakes winner Nobly Indy, Embolden, a Mike Maker-trained dropdown; are also entered.

A challenging 1 1/16-mile maiden special weight race with a full field of well-bred, well-connected fillies and mares on turf concludes the sequence. Danny Gargan-trained Pharoah's Jewel, a daughter of American Pharoah who finished third in her recent debut after encountering traffic, will take on first-time starters trained by Hall of Famers Bill Mott and Todd Pletcher, as well as Patrick Biancone and Brian Lynch.

The Rainbow 6 jackpot is paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Who's Hot: Irad Ortiz Jr. tripled aboard Oakhurst ($3.20) in Race 3, Rebelde ($6.80) in Race 7 and Buenisimo ($5.20) in Race 8.
