Nyquist’s Crimson Advocate Takes Royal Palm Juvenile Fillies S.

Trainer George Weaver booked a traveling companion for his earlier Royal Palm Juvenile winner No Nay Mets as Crimson Advocate went gate-to-wire in the filly's division, stamping her own ticket to next month's Royal Ascot meet. One of the few fillies in the field with prior experience–a third sprinting 4 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland Apr. 26–Crimson Advocate got the best break of the field and never gave the others a chance, opening up a length in the first furlong and never letting anyone get a step closer. Wesley Ward's Ocean Mermaid was the only rival to give chase but was always second best as Crimson Advocate cruised home alone to win by daylight. The final time for the five-furlong sprint was :56.25, over a second faster than the colt's division earlier in the day. With the win, she earned an automatic start into one of the six 2-year-old races at this year's Royal Ascot meet happening from Jun. 20-24 and her connections also earned a $25,000 travel stipend.

“We really liked her going into the race up there,” said winning trainer George Weaver. “I expected her to be on the lead or close to it, but she was green. We put some blinkers on her today and she broke sharp and looked good the whole way.”

Out of a half-sister to the dam of champion 2-year-old filly Caledonia Road (Quality Road) and MGSW Officiating (Blame), Crimson Advocate also calls both GISW Hymn Book (Arch) and GISW Data Link (War Front) as members of her family. Her only younger sibling is a newborn colt by Leinster. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by TVG.

Tax Package Including $27.5M in Support of Florida Tbred Industry Passed

Florida lawmakers passed a tax package May 5 that includes significant support for the state's Thoroughbred industry. With the support of Senate President Kathleen Passidomo; Senator Blaise Ingoglia, the Finance and Tax Chair; and Senator Jason Pizzo; House Speaker Paul Renner; Representative Stan McClain, Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee; and Representative Lawrence McClure, chair of the State Affairs Committee; as well as Wilton Simpson, Florida's Commissioner of Agriculture, the package includes $27.5 million annually for two years to bolster purses and racing awards at Gulfstream Park and Tampa Bay Downs. In addition, the two tracks will be provided tax credits to offset the cost of the Horse Racing Integrity and Safety (HISA) Program in Florida; the HISA assessment for Florida for 2023 will be $5.9 million.

Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to sign the bill into law.

“We thank Governor DeSantis and all of our state legislators who recognize the importance of Thoroughbred racing and breeding to the state of Florida,” Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association President Joe Orseno said. “The revenue generated through this bill will help ensure the continued stability and growth of an industry that is so important to so many Floridians.”

The FTHA represents more than 6,000 horse owners and trainers who not only work and race at Gulfstream, but also do business throughout the state. FTHA and 1/ST Racing, which owns and operates Gulfstream, worked in tandem with Tampa Bay Downs to craft the language for the legislation and to get it passed. Although the primary focus of the bill is support for the racing industry, the FTBOA was also at the table so that all stakeholders were represented.

According to a study by the American Horse Council, Florida's Thoroughbred industry has a $2.7 billion economic impact and creates more than 23,000 job opportunities in the state. From the racetracks, to the training centers, to the breeding farms to the horse retirement facilities, there are nearly 100,000 Thoroughbreds stabled in virtually every county in Florida.

“Florida supports hundreds of equine-related businesses–not just the tracks and the racing stables and breeding operations, but the ancillary business as well, such as feed and tack stores, veterinary services, transportation, insurance companies, attorneys, the list goes on and on,” Orseno said. “We are thrilled that our Governor and our legislators have given their support to the thousands in the state who depend upon the Thoroughbred industry.”

New York Thunder Brings The Rain At Woodbine

New York Thunder (Nyquist) declared victory in his first stakes attempt for AMO Racing at Woodbine on Saturday. Perfect in his only two career starts towards the end of his juvenile year, the bay colt was a debut winner Nov. 27 at Gulfstream by 6 1/2 lengths sprinting over the Tapeta. He then switched to turf against optional claimers in Hallandale and drove clear by 1 3/4 length.

After working out in Kentucky for nearly two months, the Jorge Delgado trainee shipped to Canada and was well-regarded at the windows as the heavy 1-5 favorite. Utilizing his early speed, New York Thunder tore through the fractions with a half-mile at :45.18, and into the stretch extended his lead to win going away by 7 lengths over Ninetyfour Expos (Outwork).

The winner is his unraced dam's first to the starting gate and only recorded offspring. He is part of an extended female family that includes third dam Surf Club (Ocean Crest)'s half-sister GISW Awesome Humor (Distorted Humor). His third dam produced GISW Emcee (Unbridled's Song) and SP Baffled (Distorted Humor), who is responsible for MGISW Constitution (Tapit).
