138 Tickets Win $58,267 Each On Gulfstream’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Mandatory Payout

Multiple winning tickets in Saturday's mandatory payout of Gulfstream Park's 20-cent Rainbow 6 each returned $58,267.14 on a day when the total pool at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track approached $10 million.

The sequence included Eye of the Jedi's $36.40 upset of Grade 1-winning millionaire Math Wizard and multiple graded-stakes winner Diamond Oops in Race 11, the $55,000 Coaltown for 3-year-olds and up.

There were 138 winning tickets.

The Rainbow 6 had gone unsolved for 20 consecutive racing days since a mandatory payout of $31,476.56 May 9. A total of $7,705,766 was put into the popular multi-race wager on top of a carryover of $1,861,605.13 from Friday's program.

In the Rainbow 6, the carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

On mandatory payout days, the carryover jackpot is completely disbursed and shared by all bettors holding tickets with the most winners.

The Rainbow 6 begins anew Sunday spanning Races 5-10 and offering a guaranteed pool of $100,000. Races 5 and 7 are scheduled for the turf, attracting a total of 28 entries.

First race post time is noon.

Eye Of A Jedi Upsets Coaltown at Gulfstream; Math Wizard Fifth

Eye of a Jedi stared down the most imposing rivals of his career Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., and pulled off a 17-1 upset victory in the $55,000 Coaltown Handicap.

The Steve Budhoo-owned and –trained 5-year-old gelding rallied far off the pace to defeat multiple Grade 1 stakes-placed Diamond Oops by 1 1/4 lengths in the mile overnight handicap, in which Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby winner Math Wizard finished fifth.

“He's a good horse. These are old tough veterans that he beat. They don't come back in a race; they go,” Budhoo said. “He's just coming into his own. He ran a good race last time and ran fourth in the Hal's Hope (G3) before that.”

Eye of a Jedi, who captured the Sea of Tranquility Stakes during Gulfstream's 2019 Summer Meet, rated well off the pace set by Wentz, who put up fractions of 23.86 and 46.17 seconds for the first half mile while pressed by Diamond Oops, the even-money favorite.

Diamond Oops moved to the lead without encouragement from jockey Luca Panici on the turn into the homestretch and appeared to be on his way to a comfortable victory when the Patrick Biancone-trained gelding suddenly stalled, giving Eye of a Jedi a chance to build momentum while rallying four-wide into the stretch. Diamond Oops kicked back into gear through the stretch, but was no match for Eye of a Jedi and jockey Marcos Meneses.

“The last time, I made a little mistake with the horse,” Meneses said. “Today, it was perfect. He broke good from the gate, I helped him a little bit, and he had a perfect trip. I liked being outside. The trainer did a great job. It was a difficult race, but the horse was doing perfect and he got the job done.”

Red Crescent, who stalked the pace three wide, finished third, a length behind Diamond Oops and ahead of 1 ¼ lengths ahead of Garter and Tie. Math Wizard made a mild bid to enter contention at the top of the stretch before fading to fifth, another neck back.

Eye of a Jedi carried 118 pounds, seven fewer than Diamond Oops, who conceded between two and 12 pounds to his eight rivals.

“I only race him sparingly,” Budhoo said. “He's always gives his best and he's sound.”

Paco Lopez Suspended 60 Racing Days For ‘Continuous Careless Riding’

Jockey Paco Lopez has been suspended 60 racing days for what Gulfstream Park steward Stephen DiMauro called “continuous careless riding” in Sunday's 11th race at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track aboard Itsmyluckycharm for trainer Edward J. Plesa Jr. Itsmyluckycharm finished first by 1 1/2 lengths as the even-money favorite in the 7 1/2-furlong turf contest but was disqualified and placed 10th for interference.

The suspension comes just over two months after Lopez received a 30-day ban for his role in a Jan. 31 spill that injured two riders, Romero Maragh and Carlos Montalvo. Maragh underwent spinal surgery as a result of the Jan. 31 incident and Montalvo suffered an ankle fracture. Both jockeys remain sidelined.

In the April 14 disqualification, the Equibase chart footnotes state that Itsmyluckycharm “lacked racing room along far turn, continued without clear path, then forced way out and bumped Let's Go Baby out of way entering stretch.” Let's Go Baby finished ninth.

“The 60 days was based on continuous careless riding after each time he was either called in, reprimanded or given a suspension,” said DiMauro. “Suspensions increased and his careless riding continued. So we increased it to our maximum penalty.”

DiMauro said Lopez has 72 hours to appeal the suspension, after which the effective dates will be assigned. The 60 racing days equates to roughly a 12-week suspension, based on Florida's five-day weekly racing schedule. The length of the suspension would be the same in other states as it is based on Gulfstream Park's schedule.

Lopez is the leading rider at the current Gulfstream Park meet, winning 13 races from 48 mounts, including four winners on Thursday after receiving news of his suspension.
