‘TDN Rising Star’ Into Champagne Pops Cork On First Stakes Win In Glitter Woman

Into Champagne (Into Mischief) debuted a 6 3/4-length winner last summer and achieved 'TDN Rising Star' status for her efforts when the Churchill Downs meet was forced to shift to Ellis Park. Returning to the worktab in early November after nearly a five-month break, the filly was well-backed as the 3-5 choice.

Tracking Let Them Watch (Maximus Mischief) from the second flight along the rail, the 3-year-old bided her time under a firm hold into the far turn. With a half-mile of :45.91, at the quarter pole the bay uncorked her speed and she celebrated with a professional performance by 1 1/4 lengths over Launch (Omaha Beach).

“I'm all about developing horses,” said trainer Ian Wilkes. “I like to use riders who'll stay with the horse. Julien [Leparoux] was quite happy and wanted to stay with her, and he was willing to come down, so that was the thing. It's all about developing horses and trying to win the right races.”

The winner's dam is responsible for a 2-year-old filly by Not This Time. Bedford Land initially sold to Three Chimneys Farm for $1.075 million at the '14 Fasig-Tipton Summer Horses of Racing Age Sale. She was then bought by Robert and Lawana Low while in-foal to Malibu Moon at the '16 Keeneland November Sale. Second dam GISW Pool Land (Silver Deputy) also produced her full-sister, SW Old Chestnut.

Sunday Insights: Pair Of Pletcher Firsters Do Battle On The Gulfstream Grass

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has a pair of newly-minted 3-year-old fillies heading to the post for their debuts over the turf in the Sunday finale in Hallandale.

First, EL MEGEETH (Constitution) makes her first start for Shadwell Stable. Bred by Three Chimneys, the $750,000 Keeneland September purchase is out of Amour d'Ete (Tiznow), who Borges Torrealba Holdings acquired as the third topper at the same sale back in 2013 for $1.75 million. Her most notable produce is GI Preakness S. champ Early Voting (Gun Runner).

Second dam and Canadian 2-year-old champion Silken Cat (Storm Cat) also produced Amour d'Ete's full-sister, MGSW Irap, plus recently deceased sire of sires Speightstown (Gone West) and the dam of G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 victor Capezzano (Bernardini).

Drawn to the extreme outside is the other half of Pletcher's uncoupled entry–Lady Madonna (War Front). A $675,000 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearling Sale buy for Robert and Lawana Low, the SF Bloodstock bred filly is out of GI Central Bank Ashland S. heroine Rosalind (Broken Vow). She had a 2-year-old colt by Twirling Candy sell to Willie Browne for $200,000 at the Keeneland September Sale and sent to Ireland, and a yearling filly by Tapit go for $450,000 to Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds at Keeneland's November Sale. Into Mischief Colt Takes Command Late Over Gulfstream Allowance Types

7th-Gulfstream, $72,000, Alw (NW1X)/Opt. Clm ($75,000), 1-5, 3yo, 1 1/16m, 1:44.55, ft, neck.
CHANGE OF COMMAND (c, 3, Into Mischief–Moi, by Medaglia d'Oro) made steady improvement over a trio of maiden attempts during the NYRA meets starting in late August–the last coming with a runner-up result at Aqueduct Nov. 4. Heading to Gulfstream, the bay found his stride to graduate by 6 1/2 lengths Dec. 17. Trying two turns for the first time, the 11-10 choice paced himself into the first turn just off of Cardinale (Speightstown). Shadowing the leader, the 3-year-old was given his cue at the three-eighths marker and took over the top spot. Cardinale proved a stubborn foe and the pair locked in a stretch battle, but it was Change of Command who gained the advantage in the shadow of the wire and won by a neck. “When that horse came back to him, he kind of went on from there,” Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey said. “As you saw around the turn, it looked like he was going to win by himself, and he did that the last time a little bit. He didn't want to finish as well as I'd like. I've got to do some work to figure things out. I hope this moves him forward. He had to kind of belly down and run, so that should help him. We'll take him back to Payson [Park] and find out.” Tied for the 12th highest price during the 2022 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the winner is his dam's first to the races. The colt does have a 2-year-old half-sister by Instilled Regard and a yearling half-brother by Instagrand. Still Sidelined After Run-In with Gulfstream Geese, Sutherland Fears She’ll Never Ride Again

For Chantal Sutherland, it started out as a freakish accident. She rode Haruki (Karakontie {Jpn}) in the May 6 English Channel S. at Gulfstream and as the horses were pulling up she encountered a bunch of geese who were crossing over the turf course. Spooked by the birds, the horse stopped abruptly and sling shotted Sutherland to the ground.

The result was that she broke the humerus bone completely off from her shoulder. She said that her left arm snapped at the base of the shoulder and that it went up into her collarbone. She also broke her left pelvis.

Early estimates were that she would be out about three months. More than seven months later, the 47-year-old jockey has not ridden, there is no timetable for her return and she fears that she will never ride again.

“I'm working on my range of motion,” she said. “I feel like I'm at a certain point and it's not getting better right now. My doctor said it will need time. Obviously, when you're a jockey, time is not your friend. I would love to be able to ride again. That's the dream. But the reality is I really don't know.”

“I hope it doesn't come to that, that I have to retire,” she said. “I'm not in any position to ride at a top level. There's no way. It would be dangerous and I have to get to the point where I can use my left arm. I can't. My arm won't straighten and I have a three second delay from my brain to arm. It needs a lot more work. I've been working really hard at it. I dream of racing again, but I don't know.

“It's my range of motion,” she continued. “I can't get my arm above my head. My shoulder only goes to a certain point with my muscles and my range motion. I can't lift a two-pound weight above my head. I can't get my arms above my head. I practice laying down, like a swimmer, my left arm low to the side. My right arm is perfectly strong. I could hold a horse if I wanted with reins with my right arm. But my left side is awkward. Nothing is in sync. I have no control of that.”

That the accident was so avoidable continues to haunt Sutherland. She said a trainer stabled near the clubhouse turn feeds the birds during the last break during morning training and again late in the day. The geese live in the infield lake and cross the racetracks to get fed, she said. She doesn't understand why Gulfstream didn't take steps to keep the geese off of the track.

“Am I really pissed off? Yes,” she said. “I've gone through a lot of anger with this. I was alone. I never got a phone call from the trainer. Never got a text. I heard from no one. I'm still emotional about it. I went through a lot of anger and I was really depressed. I wanted to give up. I think I am pretty stable, but talking about it is too hard. I had a good five, seven years left as a jockey. It hurts a lot.”

She is currently working as an assistant trainer to Jorge Delgado and recently took out her real estate license, but that's not what Sutherland wants to do. She wants to ride again.

“It's just that right now it doesn't look good,” she said. “I am praying for a miracle.”
