Friday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Has $850,000 Guarantee At Gulfstream Park

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $850,000 Friday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the seventh straight racing day Thursday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $979.66.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Friday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-10.

Thoroughbred, Steeplechase Jockey Hobales, 91, Passes Away

Jimmy Hobales, a former Thoroughbred and Steeplechase rider who worked for more than 50 years at South Florida tracks, died recently.

Hobales was 91.

Hobales rode at Saratoga, Belmont, Aqueduct and Monmouth in the 1950s. He also rode steeplechase horses and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in October of 1954. Born in Elmira, N.Y., Hobales grew up in Darby, Pa., where he drove a milk wagon and first fell in love with horses. Many people also knew Hobales as an entertainer who played the harmonica, including the National Anthem at Gulfstream before afternoon races cards.

WHO'S HOT: Jose Ortiz tripled on Thursday's program, scoring aboard Comedy Town ($6) in Race 1, Indy Tourist ($8.80) in Race 3, and Dream Friend ($2.80) in Race 5. Trainer Mike Maker saddled Indy Tourist and Dream Friend.

Corey Lanerie doubled aboard Len Lo Lady ($5.40) in Race 2 and Favorite Sin ($4.60) in Race 4.

Gulfstream Park: Lake Avenue Regains Winning Ways; Thursday Rainbow 6 Jackpot Guaranteed at $750,000

Godolphin LLC's Lake Avenue came through with a winning 2021 debut in Wednesday's stakes-quality featured race at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., scoring her first victory since capturing the Demoiselle Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct in December 2019.

Winless in four start last year, the 4-year-old daughter of Tapit closed from far off the pace under Junior Alvarado to catch 35-1 pacesetter Dance d'Oro in mid-stretch on her way to a 4 ½-length triumph in the seven-furlong optional claiming allowance for older fillies and mares.

“She didn't break well at all and in these kinds of races you want to at least break good so you can move forward. But I just think she was much the best. Even with breaking a little slow like that, making my move a little bit wide, having the best horse just helps. She just kept going to the wire. She ran a pretty impressive race,” Alvarado said. “When we passed the half-mile pole, I was hoping that she wasn't just fooling me there because the way she was moving was like how I know she moved when she's on her game. She just proved it today. She kept going, kept moving along pretty good, and had a very strong, nice finish.”

Trained by Bill Mott, Lake Avenue ($8.20) was undefeated as a 2-year-old with Junior Alvarado aboard. She finished third behind future Preakness winner Swiss Skydiver in last year's Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2) during her four-race 3-year-old campaign.

Dance d'Oro and jockey Emisael Jaramillo held second, 1 ¼ lengths ahead of Crumb Bun and jockey Luca Panici. Hopeful Growth, the 6-5 favorite who captured the Monmouth Oaks (G3) last year, finished fourth under Irad Ortiz Jr., in her first start since finishing third in the Oct. 3 Black-Eyed Susan (G2) at Pimlico.

Lake Avenue, a Godolphin homebred, ran seven furlongs in 1:23.46.

Thursday's Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Guaranteed at $750,000

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the six straight racing day Wednesday, when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $6,886.32.

Thursday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-10.

WHO'S HOT: Edgard Zayas notched his second straight four-win day Wednesday at Gulfstream Park. Fresh off a Sunday Grand Slam, the 27-year-old Zayas made four more visits to the winner's circle Wednesday following victories aboard Kantstaros ($13.80) in Race 1, Infatuating ($3.40) in Race 3, Codrington ($4.80) in Race 7 and R Adios Jersey ($3.40) in Race 8.

Zayas has ridden 54 winners during his breakthrough Championship Meet.

Saffie Joseph Jr. saddled his 29^th and 30^th winners of the Championship Meet, scoring with Infatuating ($3.40) in Race 3 and Nitro Time ($3.80) in Race 4. Antonio Sano also saddled a pair of winners, Leyenda ($26.80) in Race 6 Codrington ($4.80) in Race 7.

Crew Dragon Proves Ready to Launch

Kinsman Stable's Crew Dragon (Exaggerator) overcame a case of third-itis and plenty of traffic trouble to graduate by a gritty neck when trying nine furlongs for the first time at Gulfstream Park Sunday for trainer Bill Mott.

“Our team was very impressed with the gameness he showed fighting through horses to get them at the wire,” Kevin Adler, Kinsman's Vice President and Director of Racing, said. “Bill has liked this horse since the summer and Crew Dragon showed his versatility by getting the mile and an eighth.”

The Steinbrenner family's Kinsman Farm purchased Crew Dragon for $110,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September sale.

“[Kinsman President] Jessica Steinbrenner takes our team to Keeneland to try and buy a few athletes at a reasonable price to send to Ocala to train on her farm,” Adler said. “Crew Dragon had a nice athletic walk, good conformation in front, good shoulder, was decent size with an early birthday [Jan. 23], so physically he checked our boxes. We also liked that he is by Exaggerator from a female family with Distorted Humor in the third dam, so the bloodlines were there as well.”

Crew Dragon is the first foal out of Go Go Dana, a half-sister to graded stakes winner Liam's Dream (Liam's Map). His third dam is Danzig's Beauty (Danzig), dam of Distorted Humor.

The original plan was to offer the colt at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale last spring. That was until the coronavirus pandemic intervened.

“[Kinsman Farm's Ocala-based trainer] Emily Dawson has done a great job getting the babies to the sales the past few years and Crew Dragon was training nicely on the farm early,” Adler said. “So we had the intention of taking him to the sale down at Gulfstream. The pandemic forced Fasig-Tipton to cancel the sale, leaving us to navigate around all the changes to the sale dates. We were stuck in limbo not knowing if we would have any sales, so we babied him along, making sure he was sound and happy. Once we had firm dates, we were able to get him ready to send him over to the OBS sale in June to see how he would perform. He breezed well, galloped out strong and vetted clean, so our team decided that we would take the chance and run him. So a few days later, he was on a van to Bill Mott.”

Crew Dragon opened his racing career three months later, closing from off the pace to be third without challenging the top two while going one mile over the Belmont turf Sept. 18. Closer to the pace in his next start, he was unable to keep pace with runaway winner Original (Quality Road) when third again going 1 1/16 miles over the Aqueduct turf. He raced greenly to be third again going that same distance at Gulfstream Park Jan. 2.

“His first two races in New York were encouraging enough, but his third kind of disappointed us, even though he ran against what looks like two really nice horses,” Adler said. “Turf racing is tough, so you have to be patient with the young horses as they are still figuring out how to race and compete.”

Crew Dragon finally put it all together Sunday. Behind a wall of horses at the top of the lane, the handsome chestnut gamely surged between foes when he finally found daylight and just got up in the shadow of the wire for a determined victory.

“Very exciting to watch for sure,” Adler said of Sunday's effort. “You would love to have a barn full of horses with the guts he displayed.”

As for where Crew Dragon might start next, Adler said, “We have been doing this for quite a few years and one thing we have learned is it is best we let the Hall of Famer Bill Mott make those decisions.”

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $700,000 Wednesday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved for the fifth straight racing day Sunday when multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $2,718.50.

WHO'S HOT: Edgard Zayas continued to make the most of his opportunities during the 2020-'21 Championship Meet Sunday. Fresh off his winning ride aboard Drain the Clock in Saturday's Swale (G3), Zayas notched four wins on Sunday's program, scoring aboard Blessed Journey ($5.20) in Race 5, Aycapote ($8.20) in Race 7, El Pillo ($7.80) in Race 8, and Summer Kid ($13.20) in Race 9.

Summer Kid was Zayas' 50^th win of the meet.

Leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. had a three-win day, scoring aboard Topo Grigio ($3.20) in Race 2, No Decaf ($5.60) in Race 3, and War Stopper ($3.80) in Race 10.

Junior Alvarado notched back- to-back wins aboard Blessed Journey ($5.20) in Race 5 and Crew Dragon ($8) in Race 6.
