Gulfstream Park: Sunday’s Rainbow 6 Has Mandatory Payout, $5 Million Pool Projected

A mandatory payout of the 20-cent Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot pool is scheduled for Sunday's program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The carryover jackpot pool heading into Sunday's Rainbow 6 wagering will be $873,676.33. The pool is expected to swell to approximately $5 million at the close of betting Sunday.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Saturday for the 10th straight racing day since a lucky bettor broke the jackpot for $712,824.06 Feb. 22. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $487.16 Saturday.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 sequence, which will span Races 6-11, kicked off by a wide-open $16,000 maiden claiming race with a full field of older fillies and mares. In Race 7, Free to Fly, who will seek her third-straight victory, figures to be a popular 'single' in the six-furlong $6,250 claiming race for older fillies and mares. Race 8, a five-furlong dash for $16,000 claiming fillies and mares on turf will likely pose a much sterner test for handicappers.

A 6 ½-furlong optional claiming allowance for older fillies and mares in Race 9 will kick of the second half of the Rainbow 6 sequence. Bimini, who was claiming out of a third-place finish behind Free to Fly last time out, will make her first start for solid off-the-claim trainer Gilberto Zerpa.

A full field of older horses will compete in Race 10, a five-furlong optional claiming allowance on turf. Brendan Walsh-trained Lontano and Wesley Ward-trained Zanno, both of whom are coming off victories against state-breds, will face open company in the same entry-level condition Sunday.

The Rainbow 6 sequence will be wrapped up by a six-furlong maiden special weight race for 3-year-olds featuring first-time starters trained by Chad Brown, Bill Mott, Brad Cox, Saffie Joseph Jr., and Ian Wilkes.

The Rainbow 6 carryover jackpot is usually only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool usually goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool. However, on mandatory-payout days, the entire pool is paid out to the bettor or bettors with the most winners in the six-race sequence.

WHO'S HOT: Jose Ortiz had the hat trick, winning two of Gulfstream's three stakes races. Ortiz won aboard A Bit of Both ($8.80) in the Captiva Island and Farsighted ($12.20) in the The Any Limit. He also won Race 2 with Dream Friend ($4). Miguel Vasquez doubled aboard Stunning Princess ($8.80) in Race 1 and Easy Stride ($12.80) in Race 7. Paco Lopez doubled aboard Ournationonparade ($4.80) in Race 3 and Lavi ($4.80) in Race 5.

Gulfstream Park: $1.25 Million Jackpot Guarantee in Saturday’s Rainbow 6; Mandatory Payout Sunday

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $1.25 million Saturday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday for the ninth straight racing day since a lucky bettor broke the jackpot for $712,824.06 Feb. 22. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $1,545.84 Friday.

A mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 pool will be held Sunday at Gulfstream.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 7-12, highlighted by the $75,000 Hutcheson in Race 9, $75,000 Captiva Island in Race 10 and the $75,000 Any Limit in Race 11.

Wesley Ward-trained Roderick, a 3 ¾-length winner of his 2020 finale at Churchill, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite for the Hutcheson, a six-furlong dash for 3-year-olds. Dale Romans-trained Ultimate Badger, who finished third in the seven-furlong Swale (G3) last time out, cuts back to the shortest distance his has raced since winning his five-furlong debut.

Eddie Plesa Jr.-trained Miss Auramet, a close second behind graded-stakes winner Lady's Island in the Feb. 6 Ladies Turf Sprint at Gulfstream before winning a Tampa Bay Downs stakes, is rated as the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the Captiva Island. Ward-trained Karak, a stakes winner over Turfway's synthetic track, is set to return from a 10-month layoff in the five-furlong turf sprint for older fillies and mares.

Chad Brown-trained Boston Post Road, a sharp debut winner Feb. 2, is rated as the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the Any Limit, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies.

WHO'S HOT: Irad Ortiz Jr. continued his riding dominance while winning five races Friday, teaming with trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. to sweep the early double with Flamingo Hawk ($8.60) in Race 1 and Passion Plus ($9) in Race 2 before scoring aboard Rocking the Boat ($7.40) in Race 4, Create a Story ($3) in Race 6 and Gatsby ($6.80) in Race 8.

Ortiz, who is the defending two-time Championship Meet titlist, has ridden a meeting-leading 115 winners thus far this season.

Gulfstream To Install Tapeta Surface Between Turf, Dirt Courses

Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. will install a Tapeta synthetic racing surface over the outer 60 feet of its turf course, the Daily Racing Form reported on Friday. The installation will give Gulfstream three surfaces over which to race.

“We had over 100 races taken off the turf last year, and that becomes a major blow to our handle due to the inevitable reduction of field sizes,” Gulfstream's Bill Badgett told DRF. “With the option to switch those races to the Tapeta track rather than a wet main track, we'll be able to keep the fields intact, which keeps the handle intact, which in turn helps keep the purses intact.”

The Tapeta will also be able to be used for morning training, as well as an option for a surface change if the main track becomes too sloppy.

No timeframe has yet been established for the installation.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Thursday for the eighth straight racing day since a lucky bettor broke the jackpot for $712,824.06 Feb. 22. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $3,106.70 Thursday.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Friday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 6-10, including highlighted by multiple graded-stakes winner Sally's Curlin's turf debut in Race 9, a mile optional claiming allowance for older fillies and mares on turf. The Dale Romans-trained 5-year-old daughter of Curlin, who captured the 2019 Hurricane Bertie (G3) at Gulfstream, most recently finished seventh in the Inside Information Jan. 23.

WHO'S HOT: Leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. added three more wins to his swelling meet-leading total, scoring aboard Miahsolomiah ($7) in Race 1, Cairo Campaign ($5) in Race 3 and Katama Moonlight ($3.40) in Race 7.

Edgard Zayas doubled aboard Candy Flower ($12) in Race 5 and Game Boy Benny ($7) in Race 8.

Trainer Anthony Quartarolo and Jose Ortiz teamed for two wins, scoring with Load Me Up ($7.20) in Race 2 and Going For Gold ($5.40) in Race 10.

Saffie Joseph Jr. saddled a pair of winners, Candy Flower ($12) in Race 5 and Katama Moonlight ($3.40) in Race 7.
