Diamond Oops Looks Set For Another Smile Sprint Run Following Hollywood Lakes Win

Multiple graded-stakes Diamond Oops prepped for a scheduled start in the $200,000 Smile Sprint (G3) with a thoroughly professional triumph in the $60,000 Hollywood Lakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The Hollywood Lakes, a six-furlong overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up, co-headlined Saturday's 12-race program with the $75,000 Game Face, a 6 ½-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies.

The Smile Sprint will be co-featured on the July 3 Summit of Speed card at Gulfstream with the $350,000 Princess Rooney (G2), a seven-furlong Breeders' Cup 'Win and You're In' sprint for fillies and mares.

Diamond Oops, who captured the 2019 running of the Smile Sprint, was rated a few lengths off the pace set by Willy Boi, who put up fractions of 22.71 and 45.28 (seconds) for the first half mile before being joined by Ournationonparade on the turn into the homestretch. Ournationonparade took the lead at the top of the stretch, only to meet challenges on the inside by Miles Ahead, the even-money favorite ridden by Edgard Zayas, and on the outside by Diamond Oops, the 2-1 second choice ridden by Luca Panici.

Miles Ahead made a strong rail bid in an effort to win his stakes debut but was unable to hold off Diamond Oops, a multiple graded-stakes winner on turf and dirt who has earned more than $1.1 million. The Patrick Biancone-trained 6-year-old gelding ran six furlongs in 1:09.31 to win by a head while carrying highweight of 124 pounds, five more than Miles Ahead.

“He just does his job. He's so versatile, he can do anything, but I do feel like six furlongs on dirt is his niche. That's truly where he belongs,” said assistant trainer Andie Biancone. “We're really going to focus on that and try to get him to the Breeders' Cup [Sprint]. We have the wonderful Smile coming up, so hopefully that will be his next win. He loves Gulfstream.”

Diamond Oops, who won his fifth stakes at Gulfstream Saturday, was making his second start of the year Saturday after finishing a late rallying fourth in the April 20 Churchill Downs' Turf Sprint (G2), a race he won last year. The son of Lookin At Lucky provided Panici with his first stakes success since recently returning to action following a three-month recovery and rehabilitation of a back injury sustained in a February accident.

“It feels great,” he said. “This is a good horse, a class horse.”

Diamond Oops Tuning Up For Gulfstream’s Summit Of Speed

With the Summit of Speed just a month away, next Saturday's $60,000 Hollywood Lakes and $75,000 Game Face at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., will serve as key local preps for several entrants.

Millionaire Diamond Oops figures to be the one to beat in the Hollywood Landing, a six-furlong overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up that will serve as a prep for the $200,000 Smile Sprint (G3) July 3 at Gulfstream.

The six-furlong Smile will co-headline the Summit of Speed card with the $350,000 Princess Rooney (G2), a seven-furlong sprint for fillies and mares that has been designated as a Breeders' Cup 'Win and You're In' race.

Diamond Oops captured the 2019 edition of the Smile Sprint before going on to finish second in Grade 1 stakes back-to-back, once on dirt at Saratoga and once on turf at Keeneland. He started his 2020 campaign with a solid fourth-place finish in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream while stretching out to 1 1/8 miles. Back at one turn, Diamond Oops won the Twin Spires Turf (G2) at Churchill and the Phoenix (G2) on dirt at Keenland before getting a break following a pair of off-the-board finishes in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) at Keeneland and the Mr. Prospector (G3) at Gulfstream. The son of Lookin At Lucky, who is owned by trainer Patrick Biancone, Diamond 100 Racing Club and partners, is coming off a fourth-place finish in the April 30 Twin Spires Turf.

Ournationonparade, a two-time optional claiming allowance winner during the Championship Meet, is being pointed to the Hollywood Lakes and could give Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and trainer Kathy Ritvo a third Smile prospect.

Dean and Patti Reeves and Ritvo already have a pair of strong prospects for the Smile in Double Crown and Frosted Grace. Double Crown, who closed out his 2020 campaign with a runner-up finish in the Chick Lang (G3) at Pimlico in October, came off a 6 ½-month layoff a late-rallying triumph over multiple-stakes winner Chance It in a May 23 stakes-quality allowance at Gulfstream, setting up a likely rematch in the Smile. Frosted Grace, who finished second behind Grade 1 winner Mischevious Alex in the Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3) during the Championship Meet, is coming off a third-place finish in the Maryland Sprint (G3) at Pimlico following a very troubled start.

John Minchello's Competitive Speed, who was twice graded stakes-placed during the Championship Meet, is scheduled to make her first start since finishing off the board in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) in the Game Face, a 6 ½-furlong stakes for 3-year-old fillies. The Javier Gonzalez-trained daughter of Competitive Edge, who won the Glitter Woman in January before finishing third in both the Davona Dale (G2) and Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2), was bumped out of the starting gate in the Kentucky Oaks and never recovered.

e Five Racing Thoroughbreds' Sound Machine has already established herself as a Princess Rooney candidate by registering a gutsy 2 ¾-length victory in Saturday's $75,000 Musical Romance at Gulfstream.

“We'd love to win a graded-stakes with her. She's by Into Mischief; she's graded stakes-placed already; and she's won two stakes,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “To win a graded stakes with her would be huge.”

Chuck Willis Scores Fourth Win in Row in Monday's Golden Glades  
Tracy Farmer's Chuck Willis ($9.40) led from gate to wire to win Monday's $70,000 Golden Glades at Gulfstream Park, notching his fourth win in a row.

The Irish-bred 5-year-old gelding, who captured an April 22 optional claiming allowance at Gulfstream off an 8 ½-month layoff, ran a mile over firm turf in 1:33.38 under Miguel Vasquez in the overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up.

The Mark Casse-trained Chuck Willis had won one of four starts in Europe before finishing off-the-board in his North American debut in the Grey Stakes (G2) at Woodbine in October 2018. The son of Kodiac was sidelined for 19 months before winning back-to-back optional claiming allowances over Woodbine's synthetic surface and going to the sideline for another 8 ½-month layoff.

“We're very thankful to Mr. Farmer for being so patient with him. It's going to pay off for him,” said Nick Tomlinson, Casse's assistant trainer. “He's the real deal. He's had some hiccups along the way, but he can be a pretty serious horse.”

Vow Me Now and Edwin Gonzalez chased Chuck Wills throughout the race but fell a half-length short of catching him. Renaissance Frolic, the 2-1 favorite ridden by Edgard Zayas, finished third, a length back.

Gulfstream Park: Rainbow 6 Hit For $400,000; Sunday Late Pick 5 Has $128,764 Carryover

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 was solved Saturday at Gulfstream Park for a jackpot payoff of $400,000.

The popular multi-race wager had gone unsolved for six straight racing days. There was only one ticket purchased with the winning combination of 6-3-6-1-2-4.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

The Rainbow 6 will start anew Sunday with a guaranteed jackpot pool of $100,000.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-10, highlighted by the $60,000 Biscayne Bay, a five-furlong overnight handicap for fillies and mares on turf, in Race 9. Trainer Steve Dwoskin's Choose Joy has been rated as the 2-1 morning-line favorite in a field of seven off a 1 ¼-length victory in the Golden Beach last time out.

Steven Duffield's Sav is scheduled to make her first start for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. after finishing in the money in 12 of 15 career starts over Woodbine's synthetic and turf surfaces. Matriarca's Lagertha is slated to challenge Choose Joy again after finishing second in the Golden Beach.

There will be a Late Pick 5 (Races 6-10) carryover of $128,764.62.

$1,297 Payoff Despite Low-Odds Winners In Friday’s Stronach 5

There were 79 winning tickets in Friday's Stronach 5 with each returning $1,297.70.

The Stronach 5 featured races from Pimlico Race Course, Santa Anita Park, Golden Gate Fields and Gulfstream Park as well as an industry-low 12-percent takeout. Four of the five winners returned under $10 with the longest shot in the sequence going off at $6.90-1.

The Stronach 5 began with Pimlico's ninth race, a mile claiming event on the turf won by My Man Pots N Pans ($9.60) for trainer Kelly Rubley. Santa Anita's third race was next, an allowance event at six furlongs on the turf for fillies and mares that featured a heavy favorite in Lalic. The 4-year-old filly didn't disappoint at 6-5 for a $4.60 return.

Golden Gate's third race, the third leg of the Stronach 5, featured eight 2-year-olds going five furlongs after two late scratches. The winner was the 6-1 shot Love Candy ($15.80), a son of Danzing Candy trained by Ed Moger Jr.

The Stronach 5 concluded with two races from Gulfstream Park. In the eighth race, a turf event for allowance optional claimers at a mile, it was Drapes ($9), a daughter of American Pharoah, going to the winner's circle under jockey Edwin Gonzalez. In the ninth race, the final sequence of the Stronach 5, it was the 3-5 favorite Izhefrosted ($3.40) going gate-to-wire for an easy win.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.
