Jesus’ Team To Start In City Of Dania Stakes At Gulfstream Park

Grupo 7C Racing Stable's Jesus' Team, the gritty claimer-turned-Grade 1-stakes performer, is scheduled to return to action in next Sunday's City of Dania at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The 4-year-old son of Tapiture, who has been freshened since his sixth-place finish in the $10 million Grade 1 Dubai World Cup March 27, tuned up for the mile overnight handicap with a five-furlong breeze in 1:00.65 Saturday at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream's satellite training facility in Palm Beach County.

“The work was perfect. Jesus has been training great for the City of Dania,” trainer Jose D'Angelo said. “He looks great. He put on weight and is very strong.”

Jesus' Team captured a $25,000 claiming race at Gulfstream in his first start for D'Angelo in May 2020 before taking a tour of the East Coast and Midwest to compete against the best horses in training and amass more than $1.3 million in purses. The Kentucky-bred colt finished third in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. and the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., before finishing second behind Knicks Go in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky. He returned to Gulfstream to win the Claiming Crown Jewel before finishing second again behind Knicks Go in the $3 million Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational during the 2020-2021 Championship Meet.

“I think Jesus is ready to have a very good year,” D'Angelo. “The goal again is the Breeders' Cup.”

Gulfstream Park: Sunday’s Rainbow 6 Has $150,000 Jackpot Guarantee

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $150,000 on Sunday's Fourth of July program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The popular multi-race wager has gone unsolved for the second consecutive racing day following last Wednesday's mandatory payout.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Sunday's Rainbow 6 Sequence will span Races 6-11, featuring the $100,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint in Race 9. Patrick Biancone-trained Ete Indien, who captured the 2020 Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes over Gulfstream's main track, is scheduled to return from a 12 ½-month layoff in the five-furlong turf dash. The son of Summer Front broke his maiden in his debut at five furlongs on turf at Gulfstream.

Glen Hill Farm's Caribou Club is rated as the 5-2 morning-line favorite. The multiple graded-stakes winner is coming off a victory in a May 22 overnight handicap at the five-furlong distance on turf.

Espinoza Scores Last Minute Mount, Victory On Miles Ahead In Smile Sprint

Miles Ahead has been slow to develop, but the patience trainer Eddie Plesa Jr., has shown with the 4-year-old colt is starting to pay in a big way.

Three-wide entering the far turn under jockey Victor Espinoza, Miles Ahead drove to the lead entering the stretch to win Saturday's $200,000 Grade 3 Smile Sprint Invitational at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. by a half length over Chance It. Diamond Oops finished third. Owned by David Melvin, Leon Ellman, and Laurie Plesa, Miles Ahead covered the six furlongs in 1:09.61.

The Smile was one of 12 races comprising Saturday's Summit of Speed card highlighted by the $350,000 Grade 2 Princess Rooney Stakes, a Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” race also won by Espinoza aboard Ce Ce.

“He's an improving horse…one of those horses you have to have patience with,” Plesa said. “Some of these horses are late developers and he's come around nicely.”

Entering the race off a second-place finish behind Diamond Oops in the $60,000 Hollywood Lakes, Miles Ahead raced three wide down the backstretch just off the pacesetter Willy Boi, who went the opening quarter in :22.55 and a half mile in :45.16. But, around the turn, Espinoza made his move on Miles Ahead and took the lead entering the stretch before driving to victory.

Espinoza, who picked up the mount on Miles Ahead when named jockey Edwin Gonzalez was forced off his mounts after being thrown from his mount in the previous race, said: “It was nice that I was on the outside and I was able to control the race the whole way and see what the inside horses wanted to do. It worked out perfect. It was a pretty talented horse I rode.”

“We gave $175,000 for him [as a 2-year-old],” said Plesa of the son of Competitive Edge. “I worked him he never showed anything. I put him on the turf because he never showed anything, and he got beat 30 lengths. I dropped him in for $12,500 and he won the length of the stretch. He's been an over-achiever since then.”

Miles Ahead, a winner of eight of 16 starts, has now earned $260,000.

The Smile is named in honor of the champion sprinter of 1986 bred and owned by Frances A. Genter Stable. Smile was a Grade 1 winner whose first seven races were at Calder Race Course for trainer Frank Gomez.

Ce Ce Cuts Back to Earn Breeders’ Cup Berth

Southern California-based Ce Ce ventured all the way to Florida to stamp her ticket to the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint back at Del Mar. A winner of both the GI Beholder Mile and GI Apple Blossom H. last term, the homebred went winless for the rest of the season, including when fifth in the GI Breeders' Cup Distaff Nov. 7. She cut back and gained some confidence with an Apr. 17 optional claiming win going this distance at Santa Anita, but could only manage fourth–again around two turns–in that venue's GII Santa Maria S. May 22.

Unhurried in midpack between rivals early, the chestnut split foes to make a move inside of slow-starting favorite Estilo Talentoso as they stacked up four across the track. Ce Ce leveled off well after switching leads, and cruised away convincingly from there.

“She's pretty impressive. She loves this track, it's a little different than what she's been running at,” winning rider Victor Espinoza said. “Today, she ran her race. They were rolling, the ones in front of me. I know they're going to get tired turning for home, so I just gave her enough time to split the horses.”

Trainer Michael McCarthy has had past success shipping to Gulfstream–he took the 2019 GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. with City of Light (Quality Road), and was third in that event this year with Independence Hall (Constitution).

“I thought we were in a good spot,” McCarthy said from Los Alamitos. “I was hoping to have a bit of a target to run at. I told Victor not to get in a hurry and not rush her out of there and ride her where she was comfortable. We were hoping for a nice stalking trip, and that we did. Around the turn it looked like we had plenty of run. It was just a matter of trying to get outside and finding our best stride, and we did that today.”

He continued, “I thought she was overlooked last year. She won two Grade I races back-to-back. After that we just couldn't find a track that was suitable for her. She was running on tracks in California that were a little bit deep and a little bit loose. She wants one that is a bit firmer and faster, and we found that today.”

McCarthy said he'd map out a plan for his charge after getting her back to California and seeing how she exits Saturday's effort.

Ce Ce is one of 56 graded winners for the late Elusive Quality, and one of 28 graded winners (seven Grade I) for Belong to Me as a broodmare sire. She is one of three highest-level winners by sons of Gone West out of Belong to Me mares–the other two, Jersey Town and Mozu Superflare, are both by Speightstown.

Ce Ce's dam Miss Houdini was also a Bo Hirsch homebred, and annexed the 2002 GI Del Mar Debutante before later producing GII Arkansas Derby and GII San Fernando S. winner Papa Clem. Her 2-year-old colt now named Native Thunder (American Pharoah) was a $200,000 KEESEP buy by Lazy F Ranch.
