Eldon’s Prince Breaks Maiden In Proud Man Stakes At Gulfstream

Gentry Farm's Eldon's Prince ruled the Gulfstream turf course Saturday, scoring a thoroughly professional victory in the $75,000 Proud Man at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The Saffie Joseph Jr.-trained son of Cairo Prince, the 2-1 second choice ridden by leading jockey Edgard Zayas, kicked in through the stretch to register a six-length victory over 6-5 favorite Winging It in the mile turf stakes for 2-year-olds.

Eldon's Prince, a $280,000 purchase at the OBS April sale for 2-year-olds in training, scored his maiden victory in the Proud Man while making a huge step forward from a second-place finish in his Aug. 1 debut.

“I know he was a maiden, but the race looked wide open. Most of them were maidens, and the ones who won weren't all that impressive,” Zayas said. “I had a lot of hope for this horse first time out and I think he ran a huge race. He was a little green. I thought he would be a little sharper today. I've had really high hopes for him from the beginning.”

Eldon's Prince settled in fourth entering the backstretch as Winging It, an unlucky second in his impressive June 23 debut, set a sensible pace. The Jenna Antonucci-trained favorite set fractions of :24.50 and :48.56 for the first half mile, stalked closely by Up Her Sleeve on the outside and Fulton Street along the rail. Zayas asked Eldon's Prince for some run entering the far turn, and the Ontario-bred colt responded with a three-wide sweep into contention. Winging It, who was making his turf debut following his sharp main-track debut, took a narrow lead into the stretch but was no match for Eldon's Prince.

Eldon's Prince ran the mile over a firm turf in 1:36.79. Winging It, ridden by Samy Camacho, held on to finish second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Fulton Street and jockey Jesus Rios.

Eldon's Prince finished 5 ½ lengths behind Mark Casse-trained On Thin Ice after a stretch rally to finish second in his 7 ½-furlong debut on turf.

“The last race I was expecting a really big race from him. On the turn, he wasn't figuring out what he needed to do, and then, in the stretch, he figured it out,” Zayas said. “He was really running at the end, and the horse that beat him is a nice horse.”

Jockey Edwin Gonzalez Returns From Injury Saturday At Gulfstream

Jockey Edwin Gonzalez will be back in action Saturday at Gulfstream Parkin Hallandale Beach, Fla., where he has been named to ride in five of 12 races, including the $75,000 Proud Man.

“I'm looking forward to going back to work,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez has been out of action since sustaining a hairline fracture in his right leg during a racing mishap July 3.

“After about a month, I started working with the doctor with therapy to make the leg strong again,” Gonzalez said. “[Wednesday], I went to see my doctor and he told me that the x-ray was clear and I could go back to work again.”

The 29-year-old journeyman was enjoying a successful Spring/Summer Meet following his relocation from Penn National in late March, ranking third in the jockey standings with 59 wins. Despite the lost time, he is currently fourth in the standings behind Edgard Zayas, Emisael Jaramillo and Miguel Vasquez.

Gonzalez notched his 1,500th career victory June 12 at Gulfstream, where he has won four stakes – Powder Break and Ginger Punch aboard Shifty She, English Channel on Yes This Time and Sunny Isles aboard Caribou Club – during the Spring/Summer Meet. He had been scheduled to ride Miles Ahead in the $200,000 Smile Sprint (G3) on the July 3 program. Filling in for Gonzalez, Victor Espinoza rode Miles Ahead to victory in the Summit of Speed co-feature.

“I was enjoying my time at Gulfstream, working hard. I love winning races. I've had a perfect time here. I'm happy to come back,” said Gonzalez, who is represented by jockey agent Kevin Meyocks. “I can't wait until Saturday.”

Gonzalez is scheduled to ride Up Her Sleeve in Saturday's Proud Man, a mile turf stakes for 2-year-olds carded as Race 10. The Kent Sweezey-trained daughter of Mastery, who is coming off a maiden score against fillies in her turf debut, is the only filly in the Proud Man field.

Gulfstream Park: Big Fields Abound, Rainbow 6 Has $400,000 Guaranteed Jackpot

The $75,000 Proud Man will headline Saturday's 12-race program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., where the mile turf stakes for 2-year-olds will also be the highlight of a challenging 20-cent Rainbow 6 six-race sequence.

Saturday's Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $400,000. The popular multi-race wager's sequence will span Races 7-12 on a program that will feature full fields (136 entries) and six turf races.

The Proud Man drew a field of 10 lightly raced juveniles, including a pair of main-track-only entrants), with no obvious 'single.'  C My Meister, who won his turf debut while making his third career start for trainer Kelsey Danner, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite, followed by Jena Antonucci-trained Winging It, a son of Into Mischief who was valiant in defeat in his recent off-the-turf debut, at 4-1. Rory Miller-trained Fulton Street, a son of First Dude rated at 5-1, could well be a sleeper looking to his recent maiden score in his turf debut. Third-place finisher Into Touring came right back to break his maiden at Del Mar for trainer Mark Casse.

The first six races on Saturday's card figure to be just as challenging as the last six races, offering four races with full fields of 12 and three turf races for early Pick 5 and Pick 4 bettors.

Leon McKanas-trained T Ville, a son of Vancouver who was nominated to the Proud Man after finishing a troubled third in his recent debut, will seek to graduate in Race 3, a maiden special weight race at a mile on turf that also attracted Juan Alvarado-trained Globes, whose dam Pink Poppy was a multiple stakes winner over Gulfstream's turf course. Sons of Maclean's Music, Bernardini and Nyquist (two) are scheduled to make their respective debuts in the race.

Mark Casse-trained Rufa Red Knot, who finished third in her career debut in the Florida Sire Stakes Desert Vixen, is expected to receive a lot of attention from handicappers in Race 6, a seven-furlong maiden special weight race for Florida-bred juvenile fillies. The daughter of Noble Bird broke last from her rail post position and rushed up to set the pace before tiring late in the six-furlong Desert Vixen.

Saturday's first-race post time is set for 12:20 p.m.

Four-Day Race Week Begins Thursday Sept. 9
Gulfstream Park will go to a four-day race week beginning Thursday, Sept. 9.

Gulfstream went to a three-day week June 7 when work started on the construction of a Tapeta surface on the outer section of its turf course. The Tapeta course is expected to be completed in September.

Gulfstream's schedule the weekend of Aug. 27-29 will include the second leg of the FTBOA Florida Sire Stakes featuring the $200,000 Affirmed and $200,000 Susan's Girl.

Cargo Ship Users Banned at 1/ST Racing Venues

Aidan Butler, COO of 1/ST RACING, released a public letter to owners, trainers, and any other connections who use any 1/ST facilities, including Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park, warning of a zero-tolerance policy regarding shipping horses via cargo ships. Anyone who is associated with shipping a horse in this manner will not be welcome at any 1/ST racing or training locations, with an immediate removal of all of that person's horses from 1/ST venues.

“In consultation with our Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Dionne Benson,” wrote Butler, “we have determined that the conditions in which these horses are transported via cargo ship are inappropriate, inhumane and represent a significant risk to their health and welfare.”
