Some two years after his half-brother Spun to Run (Hard Spun) dominated the GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, Sabana Farm homebred Practical Way (Practical Joke) makes his debut for trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. Also responsible for stakes winner Tap It All (Tapizar), SW dam Yawkey Way (Grand Slam) sold to Gainesway and Whisper Hill Farm for $600,000 last Keeneland November while carrying a full brother to Spun to Run. Joseph will also send out A. P.'s Secret (Cupid), a $95,000 FTKSEL yearling to $150,000 OBSAPR 2-year-old off a :10 2/5 breeze. He is a half to the precocious and stakes-placed Flying Aletha (Tiznow) and a grandson of MSW/MGSP Afleet Deceit (Northern Afleet). TJCIS PPs

Stonestreet Stables LLC's $600,000 Keeneland September 2020 acquisition Bombdiggity (Into Mischief) makes her first start here on behalf of conditioner Steve Asmussen. The daughter of stakes-placed Checkupfromzneckup (Dixie Union) is a half to five-for-five 'TDN Rising Star' Carribean Caper (Speightstown), who was most recently a six-length winner of the GIII Dogwood S. here Sept. 25; and to a Tapit yearling filly who sold for $990,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga. She hails from the female family of A.P. Indy, et al.

The Brad Cox barn will send out a pair of well-related newcomers of its own. Godolphin homebred Hidden Wonder (Curlin) was produced by a Tapit half-sister to champion 3-year-old and late Darley stallion Bernardini (A.P. Indy). Savo Island (Quality Road), meanwhile, was a $220,000 KEESEP RNA who will carry the colors of Qatar Racing. She is a full-sister to Grade I-winning juvenile and freshman sire Klimt. MSP dam Inventive Dixie Union) sold for $380,000 at KEENOV '19 carrying a City of Light (Quality Road) colt who subsequently brought $435,000 this Keeneland September from the BSW/Crow Colts Group for which Cox will train. Savo Island is bred on the extremely potent Quality Road–Dixie Union cross also responsible for the likes of champion 2-year-old filly Caledonia Road and GISW Salty.

Lady Jeopardy (Liam's Map) was a productive pinhook, costing just $17,000 at KEESEP but $230,000 at OBS June after a :21 2/5 breeze. Eclipsed (Exaggerator) resurfaces after finishing second to subsequent Debutante S. heroine Behave Virginia (Unified) in a late May MSW here. That event also produced last weekend's Rags to Riches S. romper Sandstone (Street Sense). TJCIS PPs

Friday’s Stronach 5 Highlighted By Field Of 12 In Cellars Shiraz Stakes

The Stronach 5 will offer an interesting puzzle for bettors Friday with several new faces arriving at Gulfstream Park for the $65,000 Cellars Shiraz and a stakes-quality optional allowance claiming event on the turf at Laurel Park.

The Stronach 5, which also includes a field of 10 going a mile at Golden Gate Fields, will kick off at approximately 3:49 ET and once again feature a low 12-percent takeout.

The Stronach 5 begins with Laurel's seventh race, a 5 ½ furlong maiden event for 2-year-old fillies which drew a dozen including first-time starters from Brittany Russell, Michael Trombetta, Jeremiah O'Dwyer, Ferris Allen and Lacey Gaudet. Leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez will saddle American Barb, fifth over a muddy track in her debut Oct. 16 at Charles Town.

Gulfstream's eighth race, the Cellars Shiraz for 3-year-old fillies at a mile and 70 yards over the Tapeta, will serve as the second leg of the Stronach 5. An influx of out-of-towners have entered including Bellissime, who has two wins over all-weather for trainer Brendon Walsh. Mademoiselle Nova ships in for trainer Mark Casse after winning her last two starts at Woodbine. Casse has also entered Inthewinnerscircle, fourth last out in the Dueling Grounds Oaks. Leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. will saddle a pair in Tik Tok Famous and Champagne Ivy, second and third last time out respectively in the Miss Gracie at Gulfstream. Alpha Zulu, trained by Kelsey Danner, broke her maiden at Colonial before finishing fourth at Monmouth under allowance conditions.

Laurel's eighth race, the third leg of the sequence, features fillies and mares going six furlongs on the turf. Can the Queen is one of the likely favorites with two victories in her last three starts including the Sensible Lady Turf Dash at Pimlico in July. Tim Keefe will saddle Dendrobia, second in the Jameela in July at Pimlico. Two-time stakes winner Dontletsweetfoolya is entered for main track only. Triplet, seventh last out over a sloppy track, was competitive against this class in August when racing on the turf.

Golden Gate Fields plays host to the fourth leg of the Stronach 5. The mile maiden claiming event ($12,500) sees trainer Jonathan Wong sending out Luvtheoneurwith, who drops a bit in class after placing second or third in six of his first seven starts. Even Steven draws the rail and also drops in class after finishing second against $30,000 maiden claimers in September. The son of Connect comes into the race off a fifth-place finish on the turf against maiden special weight company

The Stronach 5 concludes at Gulfstream with its 10th race and fillies and mares maiden claimers going five furlongs on the Tapeta. Bordeaux Legacy, beaten a neck last out against this same company, will be one of the favorites along with Driving Wind, who finished three-quarters of a length behind Bordeaux Legacy last time out.

The minimum wager on the multi-race, multi-track Stronach 5 is $1. If there are no tickets with five winners, the entire pool will be carried over to the next Friday.

If a change in racing surface is made after the wagering closes, each selection on any ticket will be considered a winning selection. If a betting interest is scratched, that selection will be substituted with the favorite in the win pool when wagering closes.

The Maryland Jockey Club serves as host of the Stronach 5.

Gulfstream’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot Pool Guaranteed At $300,000 Sunday

Monarch Stables Inc.'s Last Leaf, who captured the Hollywood Beach Stakes of turf in her most recent start, will make her debut over Gulfstream's Tapeta racing surface in Sunday's featured Race 7 optional claiming allowance at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The 5 ½-furlong sprint for 2-year-old fillies will be highlighted in the Rainbow 6 sequence, which will span Races 4-9. The jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $300,000 Sunday at Gulfstream Park, where the popular multi-race wager went unsolved Saturday for the 11th racing day following a $461,035.47 jackpot payoff Oct. 9.

Last Leaf has an experience edge over her five rivals, having won three of six starts while demonstrating the versatility to win on both dirt and turf. The daughter of Not This Time, who broke her maiden on a fast main track in her second career start, will seek her third straight victory Sunday. She ran away with a six-furlong optional claiming allowance by 10 ¾ lengths over a sealed sloppy track Sept. 4 before scoring a narrow victory in the five-furlong Hollywood Beach on turf three weeks later.

“I asked for this race,” trainer Ronald Spatz said. “It will be fun to find out if she can win on four different surfaces. She's won on dirt, a sloppy track, and turf.”

Miguel Vasquez has the return mount.

“She's a nice little filly. She's got little feet; she's blocky; and she runs hard,” Spatz said. “She's a good little sprinter.”

Trainer Michael Stidham, who will maintain a division at Gulfstream for the first time during the Championship Meet, will be represented by Godolphin's Kit Keller, who is coming off a debut victory in a five-furlong maiden special weight race on turf at Laurel Sept. 9.

Edgard Zayas has the call on the homebred daughter of Ghostzapper.

Lemieux Commanding In Brethren Juvenile Fillies Victory At Gulfstream

D J Stable's Lemieux, a 2-year-old daughter of 2016 Grade 1 Florida Derby and Grade 1 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, broke alertly from the gate, turned back some early pressure, and opened up through the stretch to earn her first stakes victory Saturday's $60,000 Brethren Juvenile Fillies at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Ridden by Edwin Gonzalez for Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, even-money favorite Lemieux ($4.20) ran one mile and 70 yards in 1:43.16 over the Tapeta. It was Gonzalez's ninth win over Gulfstream's newly installed all-weather surface, five of them coming for Casse.

Bred in Florida and sold for $100,000 as a yearling last fall at Keeneland, Lemieux was making her fifth career start and first since finishing off the board in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 3 Pocahontas Sept. 18 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. She had run first or second in her prior three runs, including a four-length maiden special weight triumph Aug. 18 at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Lemieux established command right from the gate and coasted through a quarter-mile in :24.06, chased by Brittiz and jockey Edgard Zayas. Brittiz turned up the pressure on the turn, drawing alongside the leader following a half in :48.28, but began to drop back as Lemieux approached the stretch in front and steadily drew clear to win by 6 ½ lengths.

Casse-trained stablemate Fish Mooney made a late run to get second over Brittiz, followed by Runaway Breeze, Yes I'm Spiteful, Straight to Go, and Science Fiction.
