‘Man’ Oh Man: More Than Ready Colt Gets ‘Rising Star’ Nod

Favored at 7-5 to give his connections a second debut winner on the Saturday program at Gulfstream, Emmanuel (More Than Ready) ran them off their feet to become the newest 'TDN Rising Star' Saturday afternoon at Gulfstream Park. It was the second win on the day for connections, who were represented by impressive maiden winner Dean's List (Speightstown) a few races earlier.

Having amassed a pretty serious worktab at trainer Todd Pletcher's Palm Beach Downs hub, the $350,000 Keeneland September yearling–the most expensive of 40 More Than Readys sold in North America in 2020–drew gate one for this debut and hit the ground running, taking the field onto the course proper through a quarter in :23.66. Going very nicely into the turn after four furlongs in a crisp :45.97, Emmanuel was just galloping as they neared the stretch, and a confident look under his right armpit told Luis Saez that the rest would have to do some real running to catch him. Shoved along and asked to quicken passing the three-sixteenths peg, the burly-looking Emmanuel kicked onto his correct lead as they neared the entrance to the final furlong and ran up the score in hand to the tune of 6 3/4 lengths under the wire. The beautifully bred Touch Code (Honor Code–Caressing) tried to make a race of it turning for home, but had to settle for a distant second.

“They had been workmates the last few times and they both trained like quality horses,” Pletcher said of Emmanuel and Dean's List. “We were obviously not wanting to run them against one another, so we felt like this guy [Emmanuel] was better suited for the mile first time out. I have to give [Emmanuel] a lot of credit. To win from the one hole going a mile first time out, that's a demanding task. I'm proud of him for doing it and it looked like he did it the right way.”

The 16th Rising Star for his prolific sire–now responsible for 2049 winners around the world–Emmanuel is out of an unraced daughter of the Grade III-placed turf distaffer Trensa (Giant's Causeway), whose noteworthy produce include English champion and multiple Group 1 winner Hawkbill (Kitten's Joy) and GISW Free Drop Billy (Union Rags). Trensa's dam Serape (Fappiano) carried the silks of Helen Groves to victory in the 1993 GI Ballerina S. and bred five winners from seven to the races, including treble Grade III winner Batique (Storm Cat), the dam of MGSP Tejida (Rahy) and SP Miss Lamour (Mr. Greeley).

Hard Cloth's yearling colt by Kitten's Joy fetched $125,000 from Avenue Bloodstock at this year's Keeneland September sale and she foaled a full-sister to Emmanuel this season before being bred back to Munnings. Danzig-line mares have produced the likes of Grade I/Group 1 winners Uni (GB), Prized Icon (Aus), Sebring (Aus), Perfectly Ready (Aus), Dreamaway (Aus) and Benicio (Aus) to the cover of More Than Ready.

Speightstown Firster Green, But Good at Gulfstream

4th-Gulfstream, $53,000, Msw, 12-11, 2yo, 6f, 1:09.92, ft, 5 1/2 lengths.
DEAN'S LIST (c, 2, Speightstown–Mildly Offensive {MSW, $285,826}, by Sharp Humor) drifted out from odds-on to be the 6-5 post-time second choice, but graduated with honors. Heavily favored before being overtaken late in the wagering by Positive Review (Unified), a big-figure second on his course-and-distance debut Oct. 16, Dean's List showed first from his outside gate and took the sit from second as fellow firster Felix (Cupid) showed the way at the inside through a swift opening quarter in :21.70. Traveling nicely in hand on the turn, Dean's List hit the front approaching the five-sixteenths pole, and although he refused to swap his leads, drew clear with every stride to take it by 5 1/2 lengths. Felix just held off a belated bid from 4-5 Positive Review to complete the exacta. The third winner from four to race out of his dual stakes-winning dam, Dean's List is out of a daughter of MGSW It's Personal (Personal Flag), herself the dam of MGSW It's No Joke (Distorted Humor) and SW Keep Laughing (Distorted Humor). The winner's dam is also represented by a Carpe Diem colt of 2020. Sales history: $220,000 RNA Ylg '20 FTKSEL. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $31,800. Gulfstream Park: $400,000 Guarantee On Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 gross jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $400,000 for Saturday's 11-race card at Gulfstream Park that features the first graded-stakes of the 2021-2022 Championship Meet at the Hallandale Beach, Fla., track.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved during Friday's nine-race program. Multiple tickets with all six winners were each worth $1,169.28.

Saturday's sequence spans Races 6-11 and is highlighted by the $100,000 Mr. Prospector (G3) for 3-year-olds and up sprinting seven furlongs in Race 10, where 2020 Iroquois (G3) winner Dennis' Moment is the narrow 2-1 program favorite. Second choice at 5-2 is Endorsed, runner-up in the Louisville Thoroughbred Society Sept. 18 at Churchill Downs, three spots ahead of Dennis' Moment.

The Rainbow 6 begins with a one-mile optional claiming allowance for fillies and mares 3 and up on the main track that drew a field of seven. Race 7 is a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds, also going one mile, led by More Than Ready colt Emmanuel, a $350,000 yearling making his career debut for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher.

Also on the Saturday program is a maiden special weight for 2-year-olds sprinting six furlongs in Race 4. Positive Review, a second-time starter trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., is favored at 7-5 on the morning line after being beaten a neck in his Oct. 16 unveiling at Gulfstream.

Who's Hot: Jockey Luis Saez won two of the first three races Friday with Mount Sinai ($7.20) in Race 1 and My Prankster ($2.20) in Race 3, and completed his hat trick with No Nannette No ($6) in Race 9. Paco Lopez doubled aboard Never Satisfied ($50.60) in Race 4 and No Nay Maybe ($6.80) in Race 5. Tyler Gaffalione and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. teamed up to win Race 7 with Drain the Clock ($2.80) and Race 8 with Katama Moonlight ($9) … Breezing Friday at Gulfstream was Gary Barber, Wachtel Stable, Peter Deutsch and Pantofel Stable's multiple graded-stakes placed South Bend, going a half-mile in 48.78 seconds. The 4-year-old colt is nominated to the $150,000 Harlan's Holiday (G3) Dec. 18.

Grade 1 Winner Drain The Clock Returns To Action With Front-Running Allowance Win At Gulfstream

Slam Dunk Racing and Madaket Stable's Drain the Clock made an eye-catching return to action Friday at Gulfstream Park with a sizzling front-running victory in the Race 7 feature, a six-furlong optional claiming allowance for 3-year-olds and up.

The Grade 1 stakes winner, who hadn't seen racing action since finishing fourth in the Aug. 28 H. Allen Jerkens (G1) at Saratoga, set fractions of 22.08, 44.42 and 56.19 seconds while under heavy outside pressure from Gatsby and asserted his class in the stretch to win by a half-length in a quick 1:08.63.

“At the top of the stretch, I said, 'Go on Champ!' Normally, I watch a race and watch it very nervous. With him, I never thought he would get beat,” trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said. “I don't think we have him fully cranked, so to see him back like that…”

Tyler Gaffalione rode Drain the Clock for the first time Friday.

“There was speed on the inside and outside of us. Saffie told me to use him going away from there. He broke alertly and put himself in a great spot. He took a lot of pressure the whole way around there but he's a classy horse, very classy individual, and he responded when I asked him,” Gaffalione said.

“He's a racehorse. You can see on his form, he's very consistent. He shows up every time. Coming off the layoff, it's not an ideal situation taking that much pressure, but he handled everything great and Saffie always does a great job getting them ready.”

Sent to post as the 2-5 favorite, the 4-year-old son of Maclean's Music had won three races in four prior starts at Gulfstream, including last season's Swale (G3), before hitting the road to win the Bay Shore (G3) at Aqueduct and the Woody Stephens (G1) at Belmont. His only loss at Gulfstream came in a second-place finish in the two-turn Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2).

“I think he's going to have a big year,” said Joseph, who mentioned the Gulfstream Park Sprint (G3) on Feb. 19 as a likely target.

Gatsby held second, 5 ¼ lengths ahead of Where Paradise Lay.

Todd Pletcher-trained Nocturnal, the 2-1 second choice who was out of action since a Feb. 28 optional claiming allowance at Gulfstream, was never a factor after breaking a step slowly from his rail post position.
