Abernant Next For Oxted

Group 1 winner Oxted (GB) (Mayson {GB}) is aiming to defend his title in the Apr. 15 G3 Abernant S. at Newmarket, trainer Roger Teal revealed on Monday. Oxted, who won the G1 July Cup S., was unplaced in the Riyadh Dirt Sprint on dirt in Saudi Arabia on Feb. 20. An alternative option for the gelding is the G2 Duke of York S. if the ground is too quick at Newmarket.

Teal said, “At the moment the plan is to go to Newmarket as long as the ground is not rattling fast. Newmarket can get very quick so we will be guided by the weather. He is on track for Newmarket, but he is entered in the Duke Of York and if we feel the ground is too quick for him next week we will wait for that instead.

“He took the travelling to Saudi Arabia really well but he lost quite a bit of weight on the journey back. However, he put that back on quickly and he looks in great order–I could not be happier with the way he looks.”

“I just think we got our tactics wrong in Saudi Arabia and we should have been a bit more patient,” he added. “We chased the pace early and ran out of gas at the end. We should have let him find his way into the race instead of going the break-neck pace they do on the dirt.”

Princess Zoe Headed to Alleged

Group 1 winner Princess Zoe (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}) is targeting the G3 Alleged S. at The Curragh in April for her seasonal return according to trainer Tony Mullins. A winner of the G1 Prix du Cadran, the charismatic grey mare was last seen in action finishing fourth in the G1 Prix Royal-Oak at ParisLongchamp in October.

“We're looking at the Alleged S.,” the Gowran trainer tweeted. “It's only a mile and a quarter. I don't know if it's a winnable distance for her at that level, but we're going to try it.

“I have always been adamant that she's as good at a mile and a half as she is at two and a half–so we're going to set about proving it. If we're wrong we'll switch back and use distance races, but her work has shown me she is a group filly at a mile and a half–and we intend to prove it to the public.”

He added, “She's done loads of slow work in very soft ground and will probably go away now. Jim Bolger very kindly lets us work in his place so she might go there or up the Old Vic on The Curragh and then we'll decide the next move after the first piece of work.”

Princess Zoe Not Traveling to Saudi Arabia

Group 1 winner Princess Zoe (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}) will not go to Saudi Arabia for the Saudi Cup card, her trainer Tony Mullins revealed on Sunday. The charismatic grey enjoyed a progressive campaign in 2020, taking the Listed Oyster S. at Galway in September, before adding the G1 Qatar Prix du Cadran on Oct. 3, her fifth-straight win. Her final race of the season was a fourth in the G1 Prix Royal-Oak.

“We’ve decided against it. I’d love to go, but we thought the ground wouldn’t be suitable for her,” said Mullins. “We want to run her with a cut in the ground, and it’s unlikely over there. We’d have loved the money–but we’ll do right by her. I’d imagine we’d start in a suitable race at The Curragh if there is one, if not the Vintage Crop at Navan–that’s the plan.

“If it looks like having a crack at the best over a mile and a half is possible we’ll do it–if not we won’t. We believe she’ll be as effective over a mile and a half, and if we’re wrong the Cadran is always there. We’d like to prove it’s possible, but if it’s not that’s it. It’s nice to be thinking of these races, anyway.”

MG1SW Reliable Man Returns to Gestut Rottgen

MG1SW and Group 1 sire Reliable Man (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}-On Fair Stage {Ire}, by Sadler’s Wells) will return to Gestut Rottgen for the 2021 covering season, the German stud announced on Monday. The grey spent his first four years there, before standing for three years in France-a year at Haras du Thenney and two at Haras d’Annebault. A fee for the 12-year-old, who also shuttles to Westbury Stud in New Zealand, will be announced later.

A winner of the G1 Prix du Jockey Club and the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. in 2011 and 2013, respectively, the N. P. Bloodstock-bred has sired 13 black-type winners, seven at the group level, to date, including G1 VRC Oaks winner Miami Bound (NZ), G1 New Zealand Oaks heroine Miss Sentimental (NZ), and German group winners Akribie (Ger), Narella (Ire), and Erasmus (Ger).

“‘We look forward to welcoming Reliable Man back to Röttgen,” stud manager Frank Dorff commented. “We shall certainly continue to support him with some of our best mares. In his first three years here we bred three group winners and a listed winner from only 13 foals. He consistently produces good looking, correct horses and they are able to run at two and then compete in the best races from 2000m-2400m at three.”
