Sconsin Wheels Back To Face Short Field In Winning Colors

Lloyd Madison Farms' Grade 2 winner Sconsin along with Frank Fletcher Racing Operations' seven-time winner Frank's Rockette top a compact field of six filly and mare sprinters that entered Saturday's $150,000 Winning Colors (Grade 3) at Churchill Downs.

The Winning Colors, run at six furlongs, is the featured event Saturday night for Downs After Dark – Country Saloon presented by Budweiser. The evening features 11 races, live music, line dancers and more. First post is 6 p.m. (all times Eastern) and the featured Winning Colors goes as Race 5 at 7:57 p.m. Also on tap Saturday night is the $110,000 Keertana Overnight Stakes, run at 1 ½ miles on the Matt Winn Turf Course for fillies and mares 3-year-olds and up. The Keertana is slated as Race 9 at 10:11 p.m.

Sconsin exits a gallant effort behind top sprinter Gamine in the $500,000 Derby City Distaff (G1) on Kentucky Derby Day. The 4-year-old homebred daughter of Include was victorious in last year's $300,000 Eight Belles (G2) for trainer Greg Foley. Through 11 starts, she's recorded three wins, three seconds and one third with stout purse earnings of $453,512.

Sconsin drew post No. 4 in the Winning Colors and will be ridden by Tyler Gaffalione.

Chief among Sconsin's main rivals in the Winning Colors is the speedy Frank's Rockette. The multiple graded stakes-winning daughter of Into Mischief started her 4-year-old season with a victory in the $150,000 American Beauty at Oaklawn and finished second to Edgeway in the $250,000 Carousel. Frank's Rockette has been nearly flawless in her 13-race career with seven wins and five runner-up efforts. Her only off-the-board finish came in last year's $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) against colts and geldings.

Florent Geroux will ride the Bill Mott trainee from post 2.

The complete field for the Winning Colors from the rail out (with jockey and trainer): Rising Seas (Corey Lanerie, Ben Colebrook); Frank's Rockette (Geroux, Mott); Tipsy Gal (Colby Hernandez, Dallas Stewart); Sconsin (Gaffalione, Foley); Bayerness (Brian Hernandez Jr., Cherie DeVaux); and Headland (Martin Garcia, Steve Hobby).

Wagering is available online at www.TwinSpires.com, the official ADW of Churchill Downs Incorporated.

The National Weather Service forecast for Saturday evening calls for mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 80s.

General admission to Downs After Dark is $12 and it includes a reserved seat on the first floor and official program. No one under the age of 18 will be admitted to the track unless they are accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Limited premium dining packages are available starting at $69 per person. Outdoor-third floor box seats are on sale for $27 per person. Reserved seating can be purchased online at www.ChurchillDowns.com/Tickets.

Bal Mar Equine LLC's multiple stakes winner Dalika leads a field of 10 fillies and mares that were entered in Saturday night's $110,000 Keertana Overnight Stakes, run at 1 ½ miles on the Matt Winn Turf Course.

The Keertana is carded as Race 9 with a post time of 10:11 p.m.

Trained by Al Stall Jr., Dalika has six victories in her 20-start résumé with solid purse earnings of $404,005. In her last victory, the 5-year-old mare won the $100,000 Al Stall Memorial at Fair Grounds, named in memory of Stall Jr.'s father. Other stakes wins on her ledger are the $75,000 Blushing K.D. and $184,000 One Dreamer.

Miguel Mena has the call from post No. 10.

The complete field for the Keertana from the rail out (with jockey and trainer): Naomi Broadway (BRZ) (Joe Talamo, Paolo Lobo); First Course (Drayden Van Dyke, Vicki Oliver); Ya Beauty (GB) (Julien Leparoux, Eric Reed); Temple City Terror (Adam Beschizza, Brendan Walsh); Pass the Plate (Rafael Bejarano, Paul McGee); Tweety Show (Julie Burke, Ron Isbell Jr.); Sursum Corda (Corey Lanerie, Ian Wilkes); Delta's Kingdom (Florent Geroux, Bill Mott); Cambeliza (James Graham, Arnaud Delacour); and Dalika (GER) (Mena, Stall).

‘Kind Heart In An Unkind Time’: Attorney Tim’s Victory Honors Late Owner

Longtime owner Tim Sweeney didn't make regular appearances to Churchill Downs but when he did they were memorable. Sweeney passed away in early December at age 72 but his legacy around the racetrack and trainer Greg Foley's Barn 11 remains strong.

Sweeney's namesake, Attorney Tim, was able to record an emotional victory Thursday night at Churchill Downs for the Lloyd Madison Farms syndicate along with Foley. The 5-year-old gelding drove past Cibolian in the late stages of the featured $97,989 first-level allowance at 1 1/8 miles on turf to pay $9 to win.

Sweeney would typically come to Churchill Downs once or twice a year and don an infamous Foley Racing hat, which he embroidered “Assistant Trainer” on the side as a running joke with the barn.

“We can't speak enough about how good a man Tim was,” Foley said. “I remember the first horse we bought for that ownership group named Double Mint. He was an Ohio-bred that really started their operation.”

Double Mint was purchased by Foley in 1996 and recorded seven victories through 50 starts. Since Double Mint, Lloyd Madison Farms campaigned several star horses including multiple graded stakes winner Champali, Eight Belles (G2) winner Sconsin and Kentucky Derby 146 entrant Major Fed. Sweeney was at Churchill Downs for Major Fed's 10th-place finish in the 2020 Kentucky Derby and was able to enjoy the famous walkover with his fellow owners and Foley.

Along with Lloyd Madison Farms' stars on the racetrack, they established a strong broodmare band over the last decade.

“This is an amazing sport filled with amazing people,” Sweeney said in a 2018 interview with Churchill Downs. “We've got a good group of horses and great potential horses as part of our broodmare band.”

Attorney Tim is a graduate of Lloyd Madison Farms' homebred program. He's out of the mare Bobby's Babe who produced several top horses including Clairenation, Major Fed and Zapperini.

Sweeney grew up in Madison, Wisc. where he was a three-sport athlete in baseball, basketball and football. He was a walk-on quarterback at the University of Notre Dame in the late 1960s. Following his football career, Sweeney graduated Notre Dame with an economics degree and later got his law degree at the University of South Dakota School of Law.

Sweeney practiced law for more than 45 years and was recently recognized by US News & Reports as one of the Best Lawyers in America for Real Estate Law.

Not only was Sweeney passionate about horse racing, he adored teaching and giving back to his community. When Foley's son Alex was studying law at the University of Louisville, Sweeney was at the ready to help mentor and answer any questions.

“Loss is never easy but when Tim died it was a gut punch,” Alex Foley said. “Tim was always there for me during my schooling and always had encouraging words for me when I needed them the most. He was a kind heart in an unkind time. I will miss his kind words of encouragement followed by a quick witted joke, usually at my expense.”

While Attorney Tim hasn't won a major stakes race, the Foley barn celebrated Thursday night's allowance win like he was at the top of the sport.

Derby Notes: Improving O Besos Shows Strong Gallop Out In Final Breeze

Bernard Racing LLC, Tagg Team Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds and Terry L. Stephens' O Besos was the lone Derby contender to breeze Thursday at Churchill Downs where he cruised a half-mile in :48.

With jockey Marcelino Pedroza in the saddle, O Besos began his work at the three-furlong pole and worked through early fractions of :12 and :36.20. Pedroza shook the reins at the Orb colt at the wire where he picked up his tempo through a five-furlong gallop out of 1:00 and continued six furlongs in 1:12.60.

O Besos will have a scheduled walk day Friday when at least 16 Derby and Oaks contenders are scheduled to have their final works. They are: Ava's Grace (Oaks), Bourbonic (Derby), Coach (Oaks), Competitive Speed (Oaks), Dynamic One (Derby), Helium (Derby), Highly Motivated (Derby), Keepmeinmind (Derby), Known Agenda (Derby), Malathaat (Oaks), Sainthood (Derby), Search Results (Oaks), Soup and Sandwich (Derby), Starrininmydreams (Derby), Travel Column (Oaks), Will's Secret (Oaks).

The National Weather Service is calling for a 90 percent change of precipitation Saturday morning in Louisville and Lexington. At Keeneland, Derby contenders Hidden Stash and Like the King could move their works to Friday, according to their respective trainers.

At Santa Anita, Zedan Racing Stable's Medina Sprit worked six furlongs in 1:12.20 and is slated to arrive at Churchill Downs Friday at 1 p.m.

BOURBONIC, DYNAMIC ONE, KNOWN AGENDA, SAINTHOOD – Friday will be the work day for trainer Todd Pletcher's Kentucky Derby quartet.

“The forecast keeps changing, but it is looking dicey for Saturday,” Pletcher said after his runners galloped 1 3/8 miles over a fast track Thursday morning. “Twenty-four hours won't make a difference.”

Pletcher plans to work three of the Derby horses at 7:30: St. Elias Stable's Known Agenda with jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, Repole Stable, Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stable's Dynamic One with jockey Jose Ortiz aboard, and WinStar Farm and CHC Inc.'s Sainthood with exercise rider Amelia Green aboard.

Calumet Farm's Bourbonic likely would work at 9 o'clock with exercise rider Hector Ramos aboard.

Ramos was aboard Known Agenda this morning at 7:30 and 20 minutes later on Bourbonic while Green partnered Sainthood at 7:30 and Carlos Perez Quevedo was on Dynamic One at 7:30.

HELIUM, SOUP AND SANDWICH – D J Stable's Helium and Live Oak Plantation's homebred Soup and Sandwich stretched their legs Thursday morning on the eve of their planned final Derby preparations. Helium, with Paolo Levi aboard, and Soup and Sandwich, with Gilbert Hernandez, both galloped 1 ½ miles for trainer Mark Casse.

“They'll both breeze tomorrow; Helium will go around 5:25 and Soup and Sandwich will go at 7:30,” Casse's assistant David Carroll said. “They'll just go an easy half-mile. They both had their major works last week and came out of it extremely well. Tomorrow will just be a maintenance move. Normally we'd go Saturday but with the forecast we'll back it up a day and play it on the safe side.”

Helium, who is undefeated in three starts, and Soup and Sandwich, who is 2-for-3, are both lightly raced and full of potential, though that's where the similarities end.

“They are two different types of horses to train,” Carroll said. “Helium is a really beautiful mover and gets over the ground and trains into the bridle while Soup and Sandwich has his own way of going, but when he breezes, he's all business.”

HIGHLY MOTIVATED – Klaravich Stables' Highly Motivated came out onto the track under Peter Roman shortly after 7:30 and galloped then walked to the starting gate during the 15-minutre training window for Derby and Kentucky Oaks horses.

Trainer Chad Brown was pleased with what he saw and will keep an eye on the weather for the Blue Grass (G2) runner-up's final work.

“It went fine and it was good to get that out of the way,” Brown said. “I'm just trying to figure out now when I'm going to try and breeze. I'm going to watch the weather; I'd prefer to work him Saturday morning before the rain comes. I was speaking to the track superintendent and looking for a little guidance on that.”

HOZIER – Rebel Stakes (G2) runner-up Hozier galloped a mile and a half at 9:15 under exercise rider Joel Osorio for trainer Bob Baffert.

Hozier is No. 21 on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard.

KEEPMEINMIND – Spendthrift Farm, Cypress Creek and Arnold Bennewith's Keepmeinmind galloped a mile and a half a little before 6 o'clock with Walter Davila aboard for trainer Robertino Diodoro.

Winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) here last fall, Keepmeinmind is scheduled to work shortly before 6 o'clock Friday morning.

“David Cohen is flying in tonight to work Ava's Grace (for the Oaks) and Keepmeinmind and then fly back to ride that afternoon at Oaklawn Park,” said Sean Williams, assistant to Diodoro. “We put Walter on him this morning to get a feel for him in case something happens and David doesn't get in.”

Keepmeinmind is No. 23 on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard

KING FURY – Fern Circle Stables and Three Chimney's Farm's King Fury galloped 1 ½ miles during the reserved time for Kentucky Derby and Oaks horses. The winner of the Lexington Stakes (G3) at Keeneland in his most recent start is expected to have his final workout on Saturday, according to Greg Geier, assistant to trainer Kenny McPeek. He's at No. 21 on the Derby points leaderboard and needs a defection to make the field of 20.

MIDNIGHT BOURBON, SUPER STOCK – Winchell Thoroughbreds' Midnight Bourbon and Erv Woolsey's and Keith Asmussen's Super Stock each had an easy Thursday morning as they readied for their final Derby works in the coming days for trainer Steve Asmussen.

“Midnight Bourbon stood in the starting gate and galloped a mile and Super Stock backed up to the wire and galloped a mile and a quarter,” Asmussen's longtime assistant Scott Blasi said.

Blasi indicated that Super Stock will work Saturday, followed by Midnight Bourbon on Monday

O BESOS –Bernard Racing, Tagg Team Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds and Terry L. Stephens' O Besos worked a half-mile in :48 early Thursday morning at Churchill Downs.

“We're really pleased with how the overall work went and how strong he galloped out,” trainer Greg Foley said. “Our horse has shown improvement in every start so far. We think leading up to the Derby he's going to keep showing that improvement and run a big effort. He'll be ready to make a run at the field at the top of the stretch.

“We had some distance questions when we ran in the Louisiana Derby but he was the only horse in the field that day who was making up any ground.”

O Besos will have a scheduled walk day Friday.

STARRININMYDREAMS – Stewart Racing and WinStar Farm's third-place Lexington Stakes (G3) finisher Starrininmydreams is scheduled to work early Friday morning, according to trainer Dallas Stewart.

SHAPING UP: THE KENTUCKY DERBY – Likely starters in the 147th running of the $3 million Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (Grade I) for 3-year-olds at 1 1/4 miles on Saturday, May 1 in order of preference (with possible jockey and trainer): Essential Quality (Luis Saez, Brad Cox); Hot Rod Charlie (Flavien Prat, Doug O'Neill); Super Stock (Ricardo Santana Jr., Steve Asmussen); Like the King (Drayden Van Dyke, Wesley Ward); Known Agenda (Irad Ortiz, Todd Pletcher); Rock Your World (Joel Rosario, John Sadler); Bourbonic (Kendrick Carmouche, Todd Pletcher); Medina Spirit (John Velazquez, Bob Baffert); Midnight Bourbon (Mike Smith, Steve Asmussen); Mandaloun (Florent Geroux, Brad Cox); Caddo River (TBA, Brad Cox); Highly Motivated (Javier Castellano, Chad Brown); Helium (Julien Leparoux, Mark Casse); Soup and Sandwich (Tyler Gaffalione, Mark Casse); Dynamic One (Jose Ortiz, Todd Pletcher); Sainthood (TBA, Todd Pletcher); Hidden Stash (Rafael Bejarano, Vicki Oliver); O Besos (Marcelino Pedroza, Greg Foley); Get Her Number (TBA, Peter Miller).

Watch: Team O Besos Grateful For Second Chances And Help From Above

Exercise rider Margarito Fierro and jockey Marcelino Pedroza have trainer Greg Foley's Kentucky Derby contender O Besos in common, of course, but there is more than that drawing the pair of riders together. In a video produced by Twinspires' Andrew Brown, both men reveal their personal struggles with cancer and how the relationship with horses helped them to overcome.

Fierro, a long-time employee for Foley, was diagnosed with Stage 2 colon cancer in 2016, and underwent surgery and several long months of recovery before returning to the racetrack. Eventually Fierro returned to galloping horses as well.

“That was a good therapy for me, to be around horses,” Fierro said. “After that, I never think I'd be able to gallop again, and I did. I still do it. I'm lucky to be alive. I'm very grateful, you know. I said, 'Thanks God, for giving me this second chance in life, because some people, they don't get it.”

Pedroza lost his mother to brain cancer two years ago, at the young age of 44.

“I'm glad that she doesn't suffer any more, and that she's in a better place,” said the jockey. “She told me, 'Papi, life continues, you gotta keep going, you got kids and a wife that depends on you.”

He took those words to heart. The same day his mother passed away, Pedroza won a race at Indiana Grand. He believes she'll be riding with him in the Kentucky Derby, celebrating his success.

Now, both Fierro and Pedroza will head to the first Saturday in May with big dreams. Both believe their big chestnut colt has a solid chance to wear the roses.

“My plan is to be in the Derby, and win it,” Pedroza summarized.
