Upstart’s Green Up Romps in Boiling Springs

Team Valor International's Green Up romped to an effortless victory in the Boiling Springs S. at Monmouth Park Sunday. The 3-2 shot was under a snug hold while setting fractions of :24.77 and :49.26 in a compact field of four. She skipped clear down the lane to score under wraps.

“My thought was just to go to the lead since she looked like the only speed in the race,” said winning jockey Paco Lopez. “Todd Pletcher told me to do whatever I felt comfortable doing. She jumped a little at the break and didn't break well, but I was able to get to the rail and make the lead pretty easily. I saw Joe Bravo [aboard runner-up Radio Days] pressing us at the three-eighths, but my filly had too much left. She was very strong after we were able to get away with a slow opening half and she just took off when [Radio Days] came to us. This is a very nice filly.”

Purchased privately by Team Valor following a runner-up debut effort at Churchill last May, Green Up was transferred to the barn of Todd Pletcher and returned to the races with a 6 3/4-length graduation at Gulfstream Mar. 13. Tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' for that maiden victory, she added a four-length victory in an Apr. 21 Hallandale allowance last time out.

“She just shipped in this morning from Saratoga,” said Pletcher assistant Anthony Sciametta. “That's where she has been working. She's a nice filly. Even if the field had stayed intact, she would have been very tough to beat. Todd will make the decision on whether she goes to the GIII Monmouth Oaks or not. She's very talented.”

Share in Upstart Offered at Keeneland April

Officials at Keeneland announced it will offer a share in Upstart (r, 10, Flatter-Party Silks, by Touch Gold), sire of leading classic prospects GISW Zandon and MGSW Kathleen O. in his second crop, at its April Horses of Racing Age Sale, to be held following the races on closing day Friday, Apr. 29 . The share will be the final offering of the sale. Shareholder involvement will begin with the 2023 breeding season.

Upstart, who stands at Airdrie Stud in Midway, Kentucky, is a graded stakes-winner who earned $1.7 million. Other notable progeny includes 'TDN Rising Star' Green Up, a 3-year-old filly with two wins and a second in three career starts, including a four length allowance victory at Gulfstream Apr. 21; MGISP and 'TDN Rising Star' Reinvestment Risk, a 4-year-old colt who was second in the recent GI Carter H.; and Masqueparade, winner of the 2021 GIII Ohio Derby.

“What Upstart is doing right now is really pretty incredible,” Airdrie Stud Vice President Bret Jones said. “Zandon and Kathleen O. are the headliners, but there's so much depth in each of those first two crops. Reinvestment Risk, Green Up and Masqueparade all look poised for breakout seasons, and Upstart's 2-year-olds have averaged over $300,000 at the juvenile sales this year. He throws beautiful sales horses that can handle their early training and get better with racing. And he's shown the ability to sire not only quality horses, but elite horses. He's on that climb right now that the really top sires all make.”

The winning bidder will have the right to offer to purchase the share for the hammer price subject to a 24-hour post-auction inspection period during which the winning bidder may review all applicable documentation. The winning bidder may only purchase the share upon satisfactory review by the parties and the satisfaction or waiver of any applicable rights of first refusal or other restrictions under the syndicate agreement. Insight Outcomes: Gina Romantica Stars at Tampa

This week featured three busy days of profiled runners, with Into Mischief's Gina Romantica the undisputed headliner of the “Insighted” horses. Two others to keep an eye on are a pair of Upstart fillies: Micro Share, who won at Santa Anita, and Green Up, who was victorious at Gulfstream. Micro Share had been a subject of Insights earlier in her career and Green Up was named a 'TDN Rising Star' based on a facile romp.

Friday's Insights: Into Mischief Filly Stretches Out for Baffert

It was MICRO SHARE (f, 3, Upstart–Who'sbeeninmybed, by The Daddy)'s turn to shine after a second last out in eventual GIII Las Virgenes S. winner Adare Manor (Uncle Mo)'s maiden. Shine she did, splitting horses at the five-sixteenths pole, sweeping to the lead under a Mike Smith hand ride, and coasting home 4 1/2 lengths to the best of $750,000 Keeneland September buy Brocade (Into Mischief). Saturday's Insights: American Pharoah Filly Arrives at Aqueduct

Racing was cancelled at Aqueduct Saturday due to a winter storm. With Bells on (American Pharoah) will have to find another spot for her debut.

The multiple stakes-producing dam of GINA ROMANTICA (f, 3, Into Mischief–Special Me, by Unbridled's Song) was profiled by TDN in 2019, complete with a photo of Gina Romantica as a foal. Sold for $1.025 million at Keeneland September, Gina Romantica looks to be another special one out of her Machmer Hall dam with her 1 1/4-length debut win margin belying the ease of her flying-on-the-outside victory. With her eye-catching debut, big pedigree, and prominent connections–Chad Brown trains her for Peter Brant–it's a good bet this won't be the only time we hear her name. A $450,000 Keeneland September purchase, Watasha ran evenly. Riot House was coming off an almost nine-month layoff of his own and a trainer switch from Wesley Ward to Danny Gargan. Hector Berrios aboard Cape Trafalgar alleged interference against Miguel Vasquez and Unikee in the stretch, but stewards disallowed the claim. Both the winner and the runner-up were previous sales horses, with Unikee hammering for $50,000 at OBS last June after working a furlong in :10 1/5 and Cape Trafalgar bringing $325,000 as a yearling at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky. Sunday's Insights: Half to Maxfield Debuts in Hallandale

4th-Gulfstream, $53,000, Msw, 3-13, 3yo, f, 6f, 1:10.04, ft, 6 3/4 lengths.

Pedigree handicappers had to love Godolphin homebred Loved (Medaglia d'Oro), a half-sister to MGISW Maxfield (Street Sense), but it was Team Valor's GREEN UP (f, 3, Upstart-Green Punch, by Two Punch) who went to post at 2-5. Green Up sold for a mere $10,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling, but has had her connections high on her future–including a GI Kentucky Oaks nomination–after consistently working lights out for Todd Pletcher. She more than delivered Sunday, stalking from second before outclassing her opponents for a 6 3/4-length win and 'TDN Rising Star' honors. Both Personal Best–her Grade I-winning dam's first foal–and Get By–a full-sister to 2020 GIII Honey Fox S. winner Getmotherarose–moved up from the rear of the 12-horse field to finish midpack. Upstart Filly Runs To The Money, ‘Rising Star’ Honors

Sent off a mortal lock at odds of 2-5, Team Valor International's Green Up (Upstart) improved off a big-figure debut second for previous connections and galloped her six overmatched rivals into the ground, earning 'TDN Rising Star' honors for a 6 3/4-length tour-de-force.

Having dramatically outrun odds of 25-1 to be runner-up at Churchill Downs last May behind the subsequently stakes-placed Ontheonesandtwos (Jimmy Creed) for owner Leonard Mattingly and trainer Chris Melton, the $10,000 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling graduate was acquired by these high-profile connections a short time thereafter, according to Team Valor's Barry Irwin.

“She's tall and immature. She had a few issues and we gave her plenty of time,” he explained. “We were actually going to run her next week going a mile, but we started getting worried that the race wouldn't fill, so we sprinted her even though she doesn't want to sprint.”

Green Up's most recent breeze, a five-furlong bullet at Palm Beach Downs in 1:01 Mar. 6, had the Virginia-bred sitting on ready. Irwin said the drill was very much in character.

“Her works are unbelievable,” he said. “She goes out there, she stays with her company and just before the wire, she moves a little bit ahead and then on the gallop out she opens up 12 or 15 lengths every time.”

Off to an uneventful beginning for the in-form Irad Ortiz, Jr., Green Up tracked longshot pacesetter Teasing (Tapit)–a full-sister to GI Belmont S. winner Tapwrit–through solid opening splits. Easing alongside that one as the quarter pole loomed, Green Up quickly put daylight on her rivals and stopped the timer in 1:10.04 while never asked through the final eighth of a mile.

“It was as much as I expected and I expected a lot,” Irwin commented. “About three weeks ago, Todd called me and goes, 'this Green Up, she's a graded stakes winner, she's unbelievable.' He says, 'I know trainers never call people up with anything but bad news, so I want to call you with some good news and tell you what a good filly you've got. Pretty exciting to have one like this.”

The winning jockey added: “She did everything right. She did it the right way. She put me in a good position. She did everything so easy. Going to the turn, I just rode her, biding my time. When I asked her she responded really well. She took off.”

A May 9 foal, Green Up is out of an unplaced half-sister to the solid Midlantic handicap horse Just Call Kenny (Jump Start)–also a paternal descendant of A.P. Indy–who counted the GIII Philip H. Iselin S. as his major career victory and who won the 2014 Spectacular Bid S. over this main track. Green Up holds an entry for the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks and is the second Rising Star for Upstart, who is already represented on the Oaks trail by GII Davona Dale S. heroine Kathleen O.
