GBB Scheme Hits £8-Million Bonus Mark

After Mammas Girl (GB) (Havana Grey {GB})'s connections picked up a £20,000 GBB bonus on Oct. 19 for winning the Discover Newmarket Fillies' Restricted S. at Newmarket, her victory brought the total bonuses paid out by the Great British Bonus scheme to £8 million since June of 2020. The Amo Racing colourbearer and Richard Hannon trainee was joined later in the day by second bonus winners You Wear It Well (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB}), trained by Jamie Snowden, winning £20,000 in a Novice Hurdle at Worcester and juvenile Hill Cove (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}), trained by Jonathan Portman, collecting her second £10,000 with a win in a Novice S. at Kempton.

Bonuses have been paid out in 586 races to 462 fillies and mares, with 98 winning more than once; the most notable, on the Flat, is Blackberry (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}) who won three bonuses totalling £60,000 soon after the scheme's launch. One of GBB's aims is to increase the interest in and value of British-bred fillies at the sales. More than 500 GBB yearlings have passed through the sales rings recently.

The TBA's Deputy Chairman, Philip Newton, said, “GBB was eight years in the planning, and we launched it just as racing restarted after the first COVID-19 lockdown in June 2020. To say that in a little over two years later, we have paid out £8 million in bonuses is amazing. Some 65%–more than £5 million–has been paid to owners and 20%–£1.6million–is back in the pockets of the breeders. The industry has truly embraced the scheme and it's been a game changer.”

GBB Passes £5-Million Mark

The impressive Sandown novice victory of Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) on Friday not only saw the Gosden-trained filly's odds slashed for the G1 Cazoo Oaks but also pushed the pay-out for the Great British Bonus Scheme (GBB) past £5 million.

The scheme, which rewards connections of British-bred fillies and mares, was launched in May 2020 and features bonuses of up to £20,0000 for eligible horses, who are able to compete for more than one bonus. The bonuses are split 65% for owners, 20% to breeders, 7.5% to trainers, 5% to jockeys and 2.5% to stable staff, and have so far been won in 372 races.

“The Great British Bonus has been truly embraced by the industry and is supporting not only owners, trainers and stable staff but, crucially, breeders too,” said GBB operations executive Charlie Newton.

“There is huge demand for GBB fillies and we're seeing clear evidence that the value of British- bred fillies is increasing in the sales ring. I am consistently told that GBB is making a difference and that there is no longer the worry and disappointment in the breeding sheds if you have a glut of fillies rather than colts.”

She added, “The small, private breeders who make up a large proportion of the sector are telling us that GBB is making breeding worthwhile, that they're buying another mare or that they're no longer giving up because GBB has been a game changer.

“To have paid out £5 million in under two years is fantastic news for the industry and we're truly grateful not only to the HBLB, who help fund the scheme and make it possible, but to all those breeders, owners and trainers who support it.”

Sunday Deadline For Great British Bonus

Sunday marks the final registration deadline for this year's crop of 2-year-old fillies to be signed up to the Great British Bonus.

The scheme has already paid out more than £1.7 million in bonuses to over 110 individual winners since its launch 10 months ago. These include bonuses of £60,000 to those involved with the Bryan Smart-trained treble winner Blackberry (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}) on the Flat and Anythingforlove (GB) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}), who is owned by a 20-strong syndicate, for her three wins over hurdles this season.

A further six fillies or mares have each won two bonuses, earning £40,000 for their connections. In total, 16 individuals have won multiple bonuses, including those with 50% eligibility to the scheme, such as Martello Sky (GB). Though bearing a British suffix, she is by the late French-based stallion Martaline, but her three wins this season for trainer Lucy Wadham and her owners in The Sky Partnership have accrued bonuses which exceed her total prize-money of £18,434.

The scheme's coordinator Grant Pritchard-Gordon said, “These bonuses have been spread right across the entire spectrum of ownership and stud farms. Juddmonte is the only major operation to appear on this list, while there are numerous small owners and breeders that have received bonuses that are often many multiples of the actual prize-money received.”

He added, “Breeders have seen a positive uplift in GBB-eligible foals and yearlings through the sales ring, owners have received bonuses that far exceed prize-money earnings, and British stallion farms have seen a very positive reaction from breeders, who appreciate the benefits of producing 100% GBB-eligible stock. The Great British Bonus scheme is genuinely a lifeline for many in these challenging Covid times. It is probably providing the only good news around at present.”

Great British Bonus Scheme Reaches £1M Milestone

The Great British Bonus scheme has paid out the sum of £1 million in bonuses after just five months being active. A total of 63 winners have earned bonuses up to £20,000 so far, with six multiple winners already. Registration for 2019 fillies has closed, but the deadline for the 2020 filly foal registrations will close on Oct. 31, 2020. For more information on the GBB scheme and to register, please go to www.greatbritishbonus.co.uk or contact Grant Prichard-Gordon at grant@greatbritishbonus.co.uk.

“We are thrilled to have broken the magic million-pound barrier of distributed bonuses and are delighted the scheme has achieved all its ambitions in reaching every corner of the racing and breeding industry,” said scheme manager, Grant Pritchard-Gordon. “GBB is a valuable financial incentive, and has never been more needed than at this time. It is helping to reward and retain owners in the sport, as well as providing  additional income and incentive for breeders, trainers, jockeys and stable staff. Many yards have won multiple bonuses, including several who have won four or more, reinforcing the value and importance of this scheme for British racing.

“From Hurdle and National Hunt races at Hereford, Bangor and Kelso to maiden races at Newmarket, Sandown and Newbury, we have seen bonus winners from every part of Great Britain.”
