$300,000 Opioid Abatement Grant to Stable Recovery

Stable Recovery, Inc., a program based in Lexington that provides individuals in early recovery from substance abuse the opportunity to live in a sober and supportive environment while training to become horsemen and horsewomen, received a $300,000 grant from the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission Monday, Oct. 2, the organization said in a release Tuesday.

The funding is part of a multi-state settlement with a number of pharmaceutical companies for their roles in facilitating the opioid epidemic.

“We are incredibly appreciative of the Commission's decision to trust us with this funding for our program,” said Frank Taylor of Taylor Made Farm, who is currently serving as interim CEO of Stable Recovery. “As we continue to tighten our program and focus on helping people to recover in the most effective way possible–while also providing the industry with quality horsemen–we can use all the help we can get, and this is certainly a lot of help.”

“We are really excited for what this funding will allow us to do for our participants,” said Christian Countzler, Stable Recovery's Director of Addiction Recovery. “This will allow us to reach more people who desperately need help and to offer them the opportunity to do something special by learning a trade that is so meaningful in this part of the country.”

Blue Grass Farms Charities Receives HOKC Grant

Officials at Blue Grass Farms Charities (BGFC) have announced that the organization has received a grant from the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels (HOKC) in the amount of $6,354.00 to purchase 75 middle school backpacks and 200 grade school backpacks. Blue Grass Farms Charities serves individuals and their families who work in the Central Kentucky Thoroughbred industry by providing health and human services in six counties.

HOKC awarded $3.1 million in grants supporting 343 non-profits, impacting more than 3.8 million Kentuckians. Grants are made possible through donations from Kentucky Colonels from throughout the Commonwealth and around the world who chose to exercise the honor of being named a Kentucky Colonel in a meaningful way.

According to Commanding General Gary Boschert: “2022/2023 was another generous year for Colonels. Kentucky Colonels generosity is heartfelt and well spent on worthy agencies across the Commonwealth. Our long-term efforts in both western and eastern Kentucky are ongoing with funds remaining for each effort. We work with other agencies to ensure Kentucky Colonels money is spent wisely and deliver goods and products needed for the rebuild.”

BGFC provides health and human services to those who work in the Central Kentucky area. One of the most popular programs each year is the 'back-to-school backpack program. This year the charity will distribute 1,100 backpacks to farm and backstretch workers' children from kindergarten to eighth grade.

“We are grateful for this grant award by the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels to help with the cost of such an important tool for students to have when school starts,” states Julie Kwasniewski, director of BGFC.

TERF Awards $12,000 to Cornell’s Vet Program

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) has awarded $12,000 to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. In alignment with a mission to support and promote equine education by supporting organizations that are educating the public on the proper care of horses, TERF's scholarship recipients are Brooke Schiltz and Kaitlin Dullea. Schiltz hopes to go into racetrack practice in Florida and Dullea hopes to pursue a surgical residency.

“The Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine is very grateful for the support TERF is providing to its students, especially those planning to pursue equine medicine,” said Sheila Reakes, Director of Annual Giving at Cornell. “The College is embarking on a concerted effort to help students lower their debt-to-salary ratio, and generous scholarships like these can make a big difference in the lives of new graduates.”

TERF Awards $10K To TRF

The Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation (TERF) has awarded $10,000 to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) to be used for educational reasons.

In 2021, TERF funding provided for the accreditation of the vocational instructors in the Groom Elite Program. In alignment with their mission to support and promote equine education by supporting organizations that are educating the public on the proper care of horses, TERF offers their financial assistance in 2022. TRF will use the funds to purchase teaching aides and equipment to enhance the learning experience as the incarcerated individuals move through the Groom Elite Curriculum offered at the TRF's Second Chances Programs. TRF's goal is to provide standardized level of education at each

facility, educate inmates on proper care of thoroughbreds, and create higher skilled individuals who can receive gainful employment upon release from prison.

TRF Executive Director Pat Stickney comments, “The staff and board of TRF are extremely grateful to the Thoroughbred Education and Research Foundation for their continued support of our Second Chances Program. This funding enables us to enhance the learning experience of the men, women, and youths who participate in this transformational program. With the assistance from TERF, we can further expand our Second Chances Programs so that we can continue to change lives while saving more horses.”
