Notable US-Breds in Japan: April 24, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Fukushima Racecourses. Group 1 racing in Japan returns next weekend with the stayers center stage in the Tenno Sho (Spring) over two miles, but this Sunday's action sees the return of a pair of very exciting American-bred gallopers at the lower grades:

CUTE VILLAIN (f, 3, Arrogate–She Be Wild, by Offlee Wild) cost Katsumi Yoshida $550K at the 2021 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale on the occasion of her second birthday after the daughter of 2009 Eclipse Award-winning juvenile filly She Be Wild zipped an eighth of a mile in :10 flat (see below). The dark bay began chipping away at that investment when lengthening clear to graduate by seven lengths going this distance on Chukyo debut Jan. 29 (video, SC 10) and figures tough to handle in this second go. 9th-FKS, ¥19,530,000 ($152k), Allowance, 3yo, 1200mT
GRAN APLAUSO (c, 3, Gun Runner–Fiducia, by Medaglia d'Oro) became the first winner on turf from his exciting sire (by Candy Ride {Arg})'s first crop when carrying Yutaka Take to a one-length debut in one of last year's early newcomers' races at Sapporo June 20 (see below, SC 16). Ticketed for group company off that effort, he suffered an injury which has kept him on the sidelines for the past 10 months. The colt's stakes-winning and Group 3-placed dam is a daughter of champion Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), who is also responsible for MGSW & G1SP Gendarme (Kitten's Joy) and MSW & MGSP Faridat (Kingmambo). 11th-HSN, Yomiuri Milers' Cup-G2, ¥114m ($890k), 4/up, 1mT
AIR FANDITHA (h, 5, Hat Trick {Jpn}–Nokaze, by Empire Maker) is one of four winners from four to race out of a winning half-sister to SW Yuzuru (Medaglia d'Oro), whose daughter Yuugiri (Shackleford) will carry the silks of these breeders in the GI Longines Kentucky Oaks after winning the GIII Fantasy S. last time out. Air Fanditha became the second black-type winner out of Nokaze when coming from a near-impossible position to score in listed company over this course and distance Feb. 12 (see below, SC 6). The four winners out of the mare, including GSW Air Almas (Majestic Warrior), have combined to win an impressive 16 times on the extremely competitive JRA circuit. Gun Runner Gets First Japanese, Turf Winner

5th-Sapporo, ¥13,400,000 ($121,612), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT, 1:09.5, gd.
GRAN APLAUSO (c, 2, Gun Runner–Fiducia {SW & GSP-Jpn, $1,425,976}, by Medaglia d'Oro) became the fourth winner for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}) and his first on the turf with a smooth success on career debut. Drawn widest in a field of 16, the homebred raced deep on the course, but tugged his way up into second entering the turn. Poised to strike at the quarter pole, he was roused to the front outside the 200-meter mark and kept on well to score by a measured length as the 16-5 third betting favorite. Gran Aplauso is the first foal from his dam, a listed winner and narrowly beaten in the G3 Ibis Summer Dash over five furlongs. Fiducia is a daughter of North Hills's Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), Japan's champion older mare of 2003 and winner of the country's two major six-furlong sprints–the Takamatsunomiya Kinen and the Sprinters' S.–before they were recognized as international Group 1 events. Believe's other produce include MSW & MGSP multi-millionaire Faridat (Kingmambo) and GSW & G1SP Gendarme (Kitten's Joy). Third dam Great Christine (Danzig) was a half-sister to Horse of the Year Lady's Secret (Secretariat). Fiducia is the dam of a yearling colt by Uncle Mo and a filly by American Pharoah foaled Jan. 28. Gran Aplauso could be a candidate for the G3 Hakodate Nisai S. July 17. The progressive LOTUS LAND (f, 4, Point of Entry–Little Miss Muffet, by Scat Daddy) has finished in the exacta in six of her seven career trips to the post and enters this first black-type attempt on the back of consecutive victories at this track, a first-level allowance going this trip Mar. 28 and a soft win over nine furlongs when last seen Apr. 18 (see below, gate 4). GRAN APLAUSO (c, 2, Gun Runner–Fiducia, by Medaglia d'Oro) becomes the first Japanese starter for his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg}) and is the first foal from his dam, a Japanese listed winner over six furlongs and a near-miss second in the G3 Ibis Summer Dash (1000m). Fiducia is a daughter of Japanese champion Believe (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), who is also responsible for connections' MSW & G1SP Faridat (Kingmambo) and GSW & G1SP Gendarme (Kitten's Joy). 7th-HSN, ¥14,360,000 ($130k), Allowance, 3yo/up, 1800m
ROSE EMPEROR (c, 3, Medaglia d'Oro–Arch Support, by Arch) was bought back on a bid of $220K at the 2019 Keeneland September sale, but was hammered down for $350K at OBS March after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 1/5. The late April foal is a veteran of two starts to date, both going this track and distance, including a runner-up effort on debut Feb. 14 before a narrow maiden victory Mar. 21 (see below, gate 7). Rose Emperor's dam was second in the 2010 GIII Miss Grillo S. for this breeder and trainer Gary Contessa. B-Lee Pokoik (KY)
