APB: Spendarella Targeting Keeneland’s Jenny Wiley

In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Editor Steve Sherack tracks down top horses on the sidelines.

Gainesway homebred Spendarella (f, 3, Karakontie {Jpn}–Spanish Bunny, by Unusual Heat)–sidelined since posting a dominating 4 1/2-length victory for trainer Graham Motion in the GI Del Mar Oaks in August–will return for a 4-year-old campaign with an early-season target of the GI Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland.

“She came out of that last race with a couple of little issues and we gave her some time,” said Alex Solis II, Gainesway's Director of Bloodstock and Racing.

“She actually just got back to Graham about two weeks ago at Fair Hill. He'll get her back going and the goal I'm sure is going to be to try to run her in that Grade I at Keeneland during the spring meet. It will be up to Graham if he wants to prep her or if she'll just go straight into that.”

After beginning her career with two wins over the Gulfstream lawn, including a front-running tally in the GIII Herecomesthebride S. Mar. 5, Spendarella made it a perfect three-for-three in Keeneland's GII Appalachian S. Apr. 9. She lost very little if anything while suffering the lone defeat of her brilliant career thus far, finishing a respectable second behind three-time Group 1 heroine Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot June 17. Spendarella returned two months later and posted a career-best 91 Beyer Speed Figure in her aforementioned win at Del Mar.

“From the beginning, we had high hopes,” Solis said. “She's such an important filly for [Gainesway CEO] Antony [Beck]–she's a homebred and she's by his sire. He's enjoyed it the whole way through.”

Already responsible for GI American Oaks heroine Spanish Queen (Tribal Rule), the winning California-bred mare Spanish Bunny brought $130,000 from Gainesway at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale.

Currently in foal and carrying a full-brother to Spendarella, Spanish Bunny has also produced the MSW & MGSP 4-year-old filly Spanish Loveaffair (Karakontie {Jpn}), who brought $600,000 from Shadai Farm at last month's KEENOV sale. Spanish Bunny had a colt by Uncle Mo in 2022.

As for Spendarella, Solis concluded, “The Breeders' Cup is in California [at Santa Anita] next year and we know she'll handle firm ground. She proved it in the Del Mar Oaks that she really likes it. There's a lot of options out there on the table for next year and the whole team is really looking forward to it.”

Speaking Scout Pounces Late to Capture Hollywood Derby

Speaking Scout came running late to upset the GI Hollywood Derby Saturday at Del Mar. Cold on the board at 8-1, the gelding broke well from the 10-hole, but was content to race near the back as longshot Evan Harlan (Temple City) carved out opening splits of :24.51 and :49.86. Asked for more approaching the far turn, the bay launched a powerful four-wide rally in the lane, forging clear late to score. Spycatcher held second over Wit.

Fourth in both the GIII Kent S. and Bald Eagle Derby this summer, Speaking Scout could only manage seventh in the GIII Dueling Grounds Derby Sept. 5. A decisive winner of the Hawthorne Derby Oct. 1, he came up a half-length short of Cabo Spirit last out in the GII Twilight Derby at Santa Anita Oct. 29.

Speaking Scout is the second Grade I winner and fifth graded scorer for Mr Speaker. A daughter of SW It's Over, SP Miss Scout failed to get in foal to Cross Traffic for 2020, but had a Laugh Track filly in 2021. She did not get in foal to Runaway Ghost for 2022 and was bred back to that stallion this year.

HISA Announces Membership of Horsemen’s Advisory Group

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) has announced the members of its Horsemen's Advisory Group, who were selected from among the more than 250 applications received from hands-on racing participants from across the country. Starting in November, the Advisory Group will convene on a monthly basis to provide feedback to the Authority's executive team and Standing Committees on the implementation and evolution of HISA's Racetrack Safety and Anti-Doping and Medication Control regulations. Members will serve between 1-2-year terms to stagger changes in the composition of the group and to maximize the opportunity for participation across the industry in the coming years.

“I want to thank everyone across the horseracing community who expressed interest in joining the Horsemen's Advisory Group. I am particularly grateful to its distinguished and highly qualified new members who have agreed to collaborate with us on an ongoing basis,” said Lisa Lazarus, HISA CEO. “I know that HISA will benefit immensely from this group's extensive, hands-on experience in Thoroughbred racing as we continue to work with all industry stakeholders to advance the safety and integrity of our sport.”

The following individuals have been selected to serve as members of the inaugural Horsemen's Advisory Group:

Mark Casse is a trainer and the founder of Casse Racing based in Ocala, Florida. He has been inducted into both the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame and the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame.
Kelsey Danner is a trainer based at Palm Meadows in Boynton Beach, Florida and at Delaware Park.
Tom Drury is a trainer from Louisville, Kentucky and a board member of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association (KTA) and Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders (KTOB).
Linda Gaudet is Vice President of the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (MTHA), where she has been a member since its inception in 1994. She will serve as the Horsemen's Advisory Group's Backstretch Worker Representative given her history of advocacy on behalf of Backstretch workers.
Rick Gold is chair of the Thoroughbred Owners of California's Integrity and Safety Committee and a Thoroughbred racehorse owner in California and Australia.
Donnie K Von Hemel is a trainer based in Piedmont, Oklahoma and operates Von Hemel Racing, founded by his father Don Von Hemel. He races in Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma.
Fred Hertrich III is the former chairman of the Breeders' Cup Board of Directors and proprietor of Watercress Farm in Paris, Kentucky. He has been a breeder and owner of standardbred racehorses for the last 35 years and is also the Treasurer of the Hambletonian Society. He will be serving as the Advisory Group's Harness Racing Representative.
David Ingordo is a Thoroughbred racehorse owner and Bloodstock agent.
Frank Jones serves as Vice Chairman of both the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. He is also a Thoroughbred racehorse owner and an avid horseplayer.
Tim Keefe is President of the MTHA and a trainer stabled at Laurel Park in Maryland.
Sara Langsam is an equine veterinarian with Teigland, Franklin and Brokken DVMs who is based at Belmont Park. She is one of the Advisory Group's two Veterinarian Representatives.
Ron Moquett is an Oklahoma native and trainer based in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He races in Arkansas, Kentucky, New York and Oklahoma.
Maggi Moss is a former chief Prosecutor from Des Moines, Iowa and a practicing attorney who is also a Thoroughbred owner with horses racing in Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana and New York.
Graham Motion was born in Newmarket, England and is a trainer based in Fair Hill, Maryland and the owner of Herringswell Stables.
John Piehowicz is an equine veterinarian and founder of Cincinnati Equine, LLC. He will serve as the second Veterinarian Representative.
Tom Robbins is Executive Vice President, Racing and Industry Relations at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and will be serving as the Advisory Group's Racing Office Representative.
Rick Schosberg is a trainer and Vice-President of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (NYTHA), President of Take2 Second Career Thoroughbreds, and Director on the Board of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.
Thomas Trosin is a second-generation Farrier and past President of the American Farriers Association. He has been licensed as a plater in both California and Oklahoma and will serve as the Advisory Group's Farrier Representative.
Kirk Wycoff is a Thoroughbred racehorse owner and the proprietor of Three Diamonds Farm.

Caravel Skips Clear in Franklin

Caravel, purchased for $500,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton November sale, captured her second graded win for the new connections this year when she sauntered clear to the wire to win the GIII Franklin S. at Keeneland Sunday. Sent off the 2-1 favorite, the gray mare sat settled in a tracking third along the rail behind and opening quarter in :21.40. She charged up four wide into the lane and collared pacesetting second-choiceTwilight Gleaming (Ire) (National Defense {GB}) with a furlong to run before skipping clear late.

“The mare ran a great race,” said winning rider Tyler Gaffalione. “She broke alertly today. I knew [jockey] Johnny [Velazquez's] horse [Twilight Gleaming] was the one to beat, so I worked my way out to get behind her, and coming into the stretch, I attacked her as soon as I could. My horse was game, and she finished the job well.”

Caravel began her career racing in the silks of her breeder and trainer, Elizabeth Merryman, for whom she won four stakes. Bobby Flay joined the ownership line ahead of her first graded score in last summer's GIII Caress S. at Saratoga and the mare moved to the barn of trainer Graham Motion to finish third in the Aug. 22 GI Highlander S., sixth in the Sept. 25 GIII Turf Monster S. and 12th in the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

Fergus Galvin of Hunter Valley Farm signed the ticket to acquire Caravel for $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton November sale. Transferred to Brad Cox, she took the Queen S. at Turfway in March in her first start for the new owners. She added wins in the June 10 GIII Intercontinental S. at Belmont Park and Aug. 20 Smart N Fancy S. at Saratoga and was coming off a fourth-place effort in the Sept. 19 GII Presque Isle Downs Masters S.

Asked whether Sunday's win had earned Caravel a return trip to the Breeders' Cup in three weeks, Cox said, “That will ultimately be up to the owners [Qatar Racing, Marc Detampel and Madaket Stables], but we'll talk to them about it. I do know she's in the [Keeneland November Breeding Stock] sale, but there's been some talk about possibly running her next year as well, so who knows? At the end of the day I'm just proud of what she's been able to accomplish, and congratulations to the ownership group. She's a tough filly. She always brings it.”

Caravel is entered in the Keeneland November sale as hip 224.

Caravel is the first foal out of Zeezee Zoomzoom, who is also the dam of multiple stakes winner Witty (Great Notion). The 10-year-old mare produced a colt by Great Notion in 2021 and a filly by Street Boss this year. She is a daughter of multiple stakes winner and multiple graded placed Zee Zee.
