INS Celebrates Class of 2021

The Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeding Course, which celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year, enjoyed a more low-key event than usual Friday, June 25 to celebrate the graduation of the class of 2021. Heading this season's award winners, Jake Scott Campbell, Co. Kildare received the Gold Medal, which is presented to someone who has demonstrated an outstanding performance in all aspects of the course. The Silver Medal being awarded to Lachlan Pethica from Australia.

The INS 'Jonathan Fitzpatrick Internship' was awarded to Benjamin Shoare from West Sussex, England, who will commence his internship with the INS in July. Alexis Navet, France, who was the recipient of the Irish Field “Blue Hen” Award, was presented with a cheque for €250 and a trophy by Leo Powell for his winning article on Blue Hen broodmares, which will be published in The Irish Field. The Veterinary Exam award was presented to Sarah Kelly, Kildare, and the CEO award for the highest score in the Equine Business exam went to Conor Mahon, Co. Kilkenny. Best Portfolio of Assignments went to Benjamin Shoare and the Continuous Assessment award was presented to Niamh Walsh, Kilrossanty, Co. Waterford.

Presented annually by the Class of 84, the John Durkan Scholarship went to Grace Kerr (Class of 2020), who will take her placement with former course graduate, horse trainer Brian Meehan. The award is granted to a student who has shown an interest in pursuing a career in training racehorses.

2021 National Stud Graduating Class

The graduation ceremony for the 2021 National Stud Diploma took place Friday, June 25. Numbers were limited due to the extension of COVID-19 restrictions, however, students were joined by staff and parents with additional guests joining via a live stream from the Joan Westbrook Lecture Theatre. The assessment of the Diploma is comprised of practical work, an exam based on the Evening Lecture Program and a commercial broodmare selection project.

“We feel really lucky to have been able to have some, if not all guests, in attendance this year,” said Anna Kerr COO. “The students arrived in the midst of the post-Christmas lockdown, and have been a really fantastic group. It is always brilliant to see how quickly they all connect and support each other.”

Among highlights of the ceremony, Julie Harrington of the BHA served as a guest speaker. Additionally, Emeric Guetin received The Tim Dunlop Memorial Award for Top Student while The Watership Down Stud Best Practical Award was presented to Sam Goyette for outstanding horsemanship. Among other awards presented were The Duke of Roxburghe Award (Jagger Crawford); The Alborada Trust Most Improved Student (George Crossfield) and The John Pearce Foundation Award of Merit (Isobel Smith). A travel bursary was presented to Lilly Sahla, on behalf of the Gerald Leigh Trustees, to expand her future career by travelling overseas.

2020 Godolphin Flying Start Class Graduates

The 2020 Godolphin Flying Start Class graduated via Zoom Webinar on July 1, Godolphin announced on Wednesday. The two-year programme is accredited by the University College Dublin Michael Smurfit Business School as a Graduate Certificate in Management. The 12 trainees were virtually presented with their graduation certificates by Godolphin USA Chief Operating Officer Dan Pride. Led by Anna Power (Australia) who compiled the highest grade, the 11 other trainees are: Nico Archdale (UK), Lucy Blake (Ireland), Corbin Blumberg (USA), John Bourke (Ireland), Samantha Cripps (USA), Luke Evans (UK), Liza Hendriks (USA), Amelie Lemercier (France), Annise Montplaisir (USA), Niall O’Connor (UK), and Isabella Paul (UK).

“There are few life experiences as all encompassing, as varied and as sustained as the two years of Godolphin Flying Start,” said Godolphin Flying Star Executive Director Clodagh Kavanagh speaking from Kildangan Stud in Ireland on the Thoroughbred Industry Leadership and Management Programme. “As very many graduates have said, it is truly life changing. The development, maturity, and the experiences gained during the programme mean that this group come to graduation today as self-aware, resilient and skilled individuals. Ready to apply their many learnings and ideas to the Thoroughbred industry of which they are now part of the fabric.”

Added Tattersalls Chairman and Godolphin Flying Start Trustee Edmond Mahony, “From early beginnings the course has developed and grown and prospered, not only thanks to its excellent management but also thanks to the exploits of its graduates who are now contributing to our industry as leaders themselves. The course has become a byword for quality and its success has been achieved by the diversity of nationality, age, gender and the personality of its graduates and all involved in Godolphin Flying Start can look back in satisfaction, if not a little pride, at what has been achieved.”

National Stud Class Graduates

Despite the ongoing restrictions due to the coronavirus, the 2020 National Stud Diploma ceremony took place via live stream from the Joan Westbrook Lecture Theatre on Friday, the stud announced on Saturday. Besides receiving a National Stud Diploma in Stud Practice and Management, the graduates also earned a 1st 4 Sport Level 3 Certificate in Thoroughbred Stud Practice. Chairman Nicholas Wrigley presented the certificates, as well as the annual prizes, including the Tim Dunlop Memorial Award for the top student-Anna Hodgson, who will be joining the team at the Castlebridge Consignment. The National Stud Award fo Merit was presented to Zoe Glendinning, while Penny Hunt received the Best Practical Award and Harry Snellgrove was presented with the Alborada Trust Most Improved Award. A special recognition award was also given to Alessandro Taccioli. A travel bursary was presented to Sophie Mellett, on behalf of the Gerald Leigh Trustees, to assist her career in traveling overseas.

“It has been a tricky year with the coronavirus restrictions however this group of students have been great throughout and should be proud of what they have achieved,” said National Stud Director Tim Lane. “They have all progressed hugely from where they were when they first arrived, both practically and academically. It is also fantastic to see that so many have already secured full-time positions in the UK and overseas. We all look forward to following their careers in the future.”
