Laymon Hopes to Take Front Row at Keeneland January

Steve Laymon watched Goodnight Olive (Ghostzapper) clinch a likely Eclipse Award with her win in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint at Keeneland in November and the founder of the First Row Partners racing partnership will be back at Keeneland Monday to watch that mare's half-sister Katie's Keepsake (Medaglia d'Oro) (hip 55) sell with the Nursery Place consignment during the first session of the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. Laymon purchased the unraced mare, in foal to Tiz the Law, for $65,000 at the 2021 Keeneland November sale. At that time, Goodnight Olive had y made just two starts for the First Row Partners, who purchased her for $170,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton October sale.

“[Trainer] Chad [Brown] had told me Goodnight Olive had a lot of promise,” Laymon said. “She had had some ankle procedures done, but we knew she was very talented. So that's kind of why I bought [Katie's Keepsake].”

Of the then 7-year-old mare's price tag, Laymon said, “There was no guarantee that Goodnight Olive was going to be a Breeders' Cup winner. We had a plan and we had high hopes because Chad's skill at accessing talent is so good and he felt like she was a Grade I athlete, so I felt like $75,000 would have been a really good buy for her no matter, with her being by Medaglia d'Oro. We obviously got her for a little bit less than that.”

After breaking her maiden by 8 1/2 lengths in October 2021, Goodnight Olive romped home a nine-length allowance winner at Aqueduct in November. She resurfaced with a pair of optional-claimer scores in New York in early summer before making the jump to graded company where she had immediate success. The dark bay filly swept to victory in the Aug. 28 GI Ballerina H. before concluding the year with a 2 1/2-length win in the Breeders' Cup.

As the filly continued to improve, the partners began discussing what to do with her half-sister.

“We kicked that around a lot,” Laymon said of the decision to sell Katie's Keepsake. “We thought about keeping her for a while, but then with Goodnight Olive's success, we decided to go ahead and maybe make a profit.”

Asked if it was an emotional decision to sell the mare, whose daughter by Street Sense fetched $600,000 at last year's OBS April sale, Laymon said, “Well maybe not as much with her, but it will be with Goodnight Olive. I know some owners collect them and I tend not to be that way. I do have family that I keep that I've had a long time. But I try to make the right business decisions.”

First Row Partners still maintains the mare's short yearling colt by Tiz the Law, who likely be on offer later in the year.

“We will probably sell him in September,” Laymon said. “He's doing well. The reason this mare and the colt were not in November is that we were just not sure how Goodnight Olive would turn out in November. And so we decided to wait. We felt probably in the January sale, she would be a little more of a stick out.”

Laymon, an optometrist from North Carolina, traces his participation in racing back some three decades to Cot Campbell's Dogwood Racing Stable. While First Row Partners' primary focus is racing, Laymon and partners do maintain a small number of broodmares.

“I have five broodmares,” Laymon said. “Typically, I try to keep five or six. That's about my number. Some I have on my own and some I have with some of the First Row partners and some are First Row. This particular one [Katie's Keepsake] is a First Row. I actually bought her for myself and then I thought to be a good leader and a good manager, I should offer her to them. I didn't want to take advantage. And it's fun to have the guys involved. First Row Partners, there are just six of us, and we are scattered across the country, so it gives them a reason to follow the mare as well. A couple of my guys have never done any breeding before.”

He continued, “We buy only fillies, so sometimes you get into the mare business even though you don't want to. We have another Ghostzapper mare that we felt was a somewhat talented horse that never made it to the races, so we kept her. But we try to keep that number limited.”

Goodnight Olive could give Laymon his second Eclipse champion. He was co-owner of Dayatthespa (City Zip), who won the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Turf before being named the champion grass mare of 2014.

Asked what it would mean to add a second Eclipse statue to his collection, Laymon said, “Oh wow. I just never imagined. I started with Dogwood Stable probably getting close to 30 years ago now. Cot Campbell was such a good mentor and he could see I wanted more. Dogwood Stable had maybe only won one Eclipse Award and I was thinking about who was lucky enough to win one. And here we are with a strong chance of winning two. It's just hard to imagine. At the Breeders' Cup, I said there was one connection, besides myself, between Dayatthespa and Goodnight Olive and that's Chad. He's the connection.”

Goodnight Olive, meanwhile, is back in light training after getting a winter break in Florida.

“I went down to check on her in December with the rest of our horses right before Christmas,” Laymon said. “Chad had given her 45 days of just turn out. She's back in light training. It's a little soon [to have a target race]. But Chad is a second-half-of-the-year guy. I would think springtime. Probably the Madison at Keeneland would be a first target. If she's ready, I would think that would be the target because she's done so well at Keeneland. It just makes sense to start there if she's ready.”

The Keeneland January sale will be held Monday through Thursday with bidding beginning each day at 10 a.m.

New Vocations Breeders’ Cup Pledge Raises Over $140K

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program's early estimate of funds raised during its Breeders' Cup Pledge will be more than $140,000, it was announced Monday. This year's total was driven by a record nine horses with pledging connections–Wonder Wheel, Meditate (Ire), Forte, Victoria Road (Ire), Goodnight Olive, Caravel, Tuesday (Ire), Malathaat and Flightline–winning their races on Future Stars Friday and Championship Saturday.

Additional pledges are still coming in and final donations are still being tallied. Now in its 13th year, the Pledge has raised more than $1 million, with 100% of funds going directly to support the program's rehabilitation, retraining and rehoming efforts, which serves more than 500 horses a year.

“Pledging a portion of my Breeders Cup winnings to New Vocations is the very least that I can do as a horse owner,” said Jay Hanley of Team Hanley. “In our sport, horses–in this particular case for me Goodnight Olive–are the stars of the show. They are the ones at risk, laying it on the line every day for our enjoyment. It is absolutely our responsibility to ensure that our horses are properly cared for after their racing career is over.”

“I applaud the tireless efforts of Anna Ford and her staff at New Vocations and I look forward to supporting them for the rest of my life,” he added. “They are doing the most important work of anyone in the industry.”

In addition to Team Hanley, winning connections include D.J. Stable and the Green Family (Wonder Wheel); Coolmore and Partners (Meditate, Victoria Road and Tuesday); Todd Pletcher and Repole Stable (Forte); Madaket Stables (Caravel); Todd Pletcher (Malathaat); and West Point Thoroughbreds and Siena Farm (Flightline).

This year's pledge participants also include Bass Racing, Bob Baffert, Paul Braverman, Chad Brown, Cannon Thoroughbreds, CHC Inc., Cheyenne Stables, Michael Dubb, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, John D. Gunther, Fred and Debbie Kuntzman, Michael McCarthy, H. Graham Motion, Gatsas Stables, Harrell Ventures, Joe R. Peacock, Jr., LNJ Foxwoods, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, J. Kirk and Judy Robison, Rodeo Creek Racing, Richard Schermerhorn, SF Racing, Spendthrift Farm, Starlight Racing, Stonestreet Stables, Twin Creeks Racing Stables, Wertheimer et Frere and WinStar Farm.

“We are very grateful for the overwhelming support from the owners and trainers who choose to join the Pledge this year,” said Anna Ford, New Vocations Program Thoroughbred Program Director. “With over 60 horses with connections pledging this year, the campaign raises awareness and much-needed funds to continue our mission and grow our aftercare efforts.”

Goodnight Olive Anything But The ‘Pits’ In Filly and Mare Sprint

Breeders' Cup Saturday was off to a good start for chalk players, as First Row Partners and Team Hanley's Goodnight Olive (Ghostzapper) gave those that backed her into 9-5 favoritism a few anxious moments when in tight quarters for a few strides, but she launched a well-timed bid three wide into the Keeneland stretch and drew clear as much the best in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Away to an almost too-sharp beginning from her middle gate, the $170,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling purchase raced in the second flight of horses as the rail-drawn Slammed (Marking) argued the early pace inside of 2021 runner-up Edgeway (Competitive Edge) through a solid opening quarter of :22.10, with Lady Rocket (Tale of the Cat) and outposted 'TDN Rising Star' Echo Zulu (Gun Runner) on the pace three and four deep, respectively. Taken hold of so as not to run up on the heels of Lady Rocket as they hit the turn, Goodnight Olive still traveled well and was given her cue at the five-sixteenths, just as Echo Zulu was launching a simultaneous bid one path to her outside. Goodnight Olive was kicked into the lead by Irad Ortiz, Jr. outside of a tiring Edgeway with a bit more than a furlong and a half to travel and was not in danger from there, as last year's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies heroine closed gamely for second. Wicked Halo (Gun Runner), winner of the GII Lexus Raven Run S. over the course and distance just two weeks back, carved out an inside trip from a high draw of her own and boxed on well to complete the exacta.

Goodnight Olive is the second Breeders' Cup winner for Ghostzapper, whose daughter Judy the Beauty won this event in 2014. It was a second F/M Sprint for Chad Brown, having saddled Wavell Avenue (Harlington) to an upset when Keeneland hosted the Breeders' Cup for the first time in 2015 and his 16th championship victory overall. With the win, Ortiz, Jr. overtakes Jerry Bailey and Joel Rosario with his 16th winner at the Breeders' Cup, good for third-most in history behind Mike Smith (27) and John Velazquez (18).

Goodnight Olive was making just her 10th career trip to the races and has been something of a project for Brown. A wide-margin maiden winner at this track a bit more than year ago, Goodnight Olive romped by nine lengths in an Aqueduct allowance last November before hitting the shelf. Highly impressive in winning her second allowance condition in her first try over this distance in June, she cleared her next level at Saratoga Aug. 7 and was exiting a 2 3/4-length success in the GI Ballerina S. at the Spa Aug. 28.

“With all the stoppages and such, we really utilized her allowance conditions and tried to develop her not throw too much too soon at her,” said Brown. “I think that's why she does have this almost flawless record is just taking it step by step with her.”

Steve Laymon heads up First Row Partners, which includes owners from California and Montana, and was part of the group that campaigned the Brown-conditioned 2014 GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Dayatthespa (City Zip).

“We're so privileged to have a group of guys that–most of my guys have been in the horse business along the way,” Laymon said. “But about five years ago, one of my partners that sits next to me, in the first row at Saratoga, leaned over and said, 'I want to do horses with you.' So I brought two groups together. There's six of us that make up First Row Partners. And we have a wonderful group of guys. And Chad got to know those guys.”

Pedigree Notes:

Sensational winner of the 2004 GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Lone Star Park, Ghostzapper has 14 top-level winners, six of which–remarkably–have scored at least one of those victories over the specialist distance of seven furlongs (Guarana, Paulassilverlining, Judy the Beauty, Better Lucky and Nucky). Goodnight Olive is the second Breeders' Cup winner out of a daughter of the late Smart Strike, joining GI Filly & Mare Turf upsetter Shared Account (Pleasantly Perfect).

Goodnight Olive's dam won the 2011 GIII Dogwood S. and 2012 GIII Gardenia S. for Craig Singer and Ken McPeek and was acquired by Stonestreet for $800,000 in foal to Medaglia d'Oro at the 2013 Keeneland November Sale. Salty Strike is a half-sister to SW Salty Response (Cozzene).

Selections for Breeders’ Cup Saturday

TDN's Senior Editor Steve Sherack reveals his selections for Breeders' Cup Saturday.

Race 3: GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint–#8 Goodnight Olive (3-1)

This is definitely one of my stronger opinions of the weekend. I love Goodnight Olive in this spot. Her win in the GI Ballerina this summer was as good as it gets and she's tactical enough to work out that same kind of trip right off the speed. Have good memories cashing on the Chad Brown-trained Wavell Avenue in this same race at Keeneland in 2015.

Race 4: GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint–#8 Golden Pal (2-1)

Can't see two-time Breeders' Cup winner Golden Pal getting beat here, especially over his home court. Won't get rich with that opinion, but getting longshots #7 Arrest Me Red (15-1) and/or #14 Artemus Citylimits (30-1) involved underneath in the gimmicks can still pay decent.

Race 5: GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile–#3 Pipeline (8-1)

With the defection of Laurel River–he really did look very tough in here–I'll take a shot with Pipeline now. He's fast enough to wire this field, but can also sit right off if necessary. The price should be right.

Race 11: GI Breeders' Cup Classic–#6 Epicenter (5-1)

Can Flightline get upset here? Highly unlikely. But if anyone has a chance to make him work for it, it's Epicenter. After making my largest win bet of the year (and highest in quite some time) in the Kentucky Derby, it's been rewarding sticking with him throughout the summer at Saratoga. I'm gonna need higher than the morning-line quote of 5-1 to be a player here though.
