Good Magic’s Reincarnate Wires Los Alamitos Derby

Reincarnate (c, 3, Good Magic–Allanah, by Scat Daddy), 13th for trainer Tim Yakteen after racing on a scorching early pace in the GI Kentucky Derby, returned to the Bob Baffert barn with a stylish 2 1/2-length win in Saturday evening's $125,000 Los Alamitos Derby.

The even-money favorite showed the way through early fractions of :23.33 and :47.75. Racing under pressure heading into the far turn, he leveled off nicely into the stretch and was never seriously threatened by last out GI Santa Anita Derby third-place finisher and second-choice Skinner (Curlin). Prince Abu Dhabi (Palace Malice) was third.

Reincarnate made the first five starts of his career for Baffert, led by a game victory in the GIII Sham S. Jan. 8. He made three subsequent starts for Yakteen, including a pair of third-place finishes in Oaklawn's GII Rebel S. Feb. 25 and GI Arkansas Derby Apr. 1. He was beaten by 24 1/2 lengths on the first Saturday in May.

“We used this race as a prep with (3-year-old champion) West Coast (in 2017) for the Travers and we'd like to do the same with this colt with a race like that,” Baffert said. “I told (jockey) Juan (Hernandez) that he was back to how he was when he won the Sham. It was very important to get the win with him especially when you know how good Skinner is. This race always comes up tough and it was a big win for the team.”

The stakes-winning Allanah produced a colt by Goldencents in 2021 ($52,000 OBSMAR '23 purchase by Doug O'Neill) and a colt by Liam's Map in 2022.

Mage Returns To Work Tab

Mage (Good Magic) recorded his first published workout since winning the GI Kentucky Derby when he breezed five furlongs in 1:07.20 at the Thoroughbred Center in Lexington Friday morning. His connections have yet to decide on his next start.

“We gave him 17 days without a saddle or, obviously, going to the track, so he got a really big break,” said co-owner Ramiro Restrepo. “He was kind of getting a bit bored and wanting to do something so it was time to get him rolling. He has been back on the track for a little under two weeks now. This was his first leg-stretcher. It was a little wake up call. This was not a matter of tightening the screws. It was more like his first day back in the gym.”

Restrepo said that no one should read too much into how slow the time of the work was.

“He had a little over two weeks of doing absolutely nothing and kind of laying out,” he said. “The last thing you would want is to rip him out of the gate. It was more of a strong gallop that was recorded as a breeze. It was the first work back, so the time has nothing to do with it.  It was to show we're back in workout mode. We've never cared about his times in works. There's a bigger objective here than the time of a workout. You don't get prize money or trophies for winning in the mornings. It's just a fitness thing to get him up and at them.”

Restrepo said that three options are being discussed regarding where Mage will run next. They are the GI Haskell S., the GII Jim Dandy S. or the GI Travers.

“Whether we point him to the Jim Dandy, the Haskell or go straight to the Travers, there's a 33 percent chance with all three,” he said. “It's going to be a matter of seeing how he's doing once we get him on a steady work pattern. The No. 1 goal is to make it to the Travers. Bar none, the Travers is the big show for us. He's obviously proven at the mile and a quarter. He'll be shipping to Saratoga sooner rather than later.”

Also, yet to be resolved is what Javier Castellano will do in the event that Mage and GI Belmont S. winner Arcangelo (Arrogate) show up in the same race. If both stay healthy, they will likely face each other sometime this summer, perhaps in the Travers.

“So many things can happen and we are quite a ways away from when he races again, so we haven't even broached the subject with Javier regarding what his decision might be or what his thoughts are,” Restrepo said. “Let's not put the cart before the horse. Let's get him in race shape and then we will start having those discussions with Javier.”

Two high-priced maidens will kick off their careers at Ellis Park Thursday. BC Stables paid $1.35 million for DAILY GRIND (Medaglia d'Oro) at last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Yearling sale. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, the bay colt is out of SW Walk Close (Tapit), who also produced his full-brother Anneau d'Or, second-place finisher in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

Lambo (Uncle Mo), trained by Steve Asmussen, brought $950,000 from the Heiligbrodts and Jackpot Farm at OBS March after posting a :10 flat move during the under-tack show. He previously brought $360,000 as a KEENOV weanling and RNA'd for $575,000 as a FTSAUG yearling. His unraced dam Sunshiny Day (Bernardini) is out of champion 2-year-old filly & MGISW Storm Song (Summer Squall), who produced Another Storm (Gone West), dam of MG1SW Order Of St George (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Muth Speeds To ‘TDN Rising Star’ Status After Flashy Debut

Muth (c, 2, Good Magic–Hoppa, Uncle Mo), a $2 million purchase back in March at OBS, certainly lived up to expectations Sunday afternoon at The Great Race Place as he won convincingly in his debut at odds of 1-5 and stamped himself as a newly-minted 'TDN Rising Star' for his efforts.

After settling down in the gate, the bay colt briefly broke outward, but flashed some strong early foot to seize the lead up the backstretch. Immediately distancing himself from the rest of the field, the Bob Baffert trainee poured on the power around the far turn. Into the stretch, despite the efforts of El Magnifico (Street Sense) and Harry Houdini, Juan Hernandez geared his mount down en route to break his maiden by 8 3/4 lengths.

The winner, who tied and OBS sale record when he was purchased by Amr Zedan, breezed during the under tack show in March going a furlong in :9 3/5.

The first of Hoppa's offspring to make the races, she also has a yearling filly by Violence and foaled a filly by Tacitus May 10. Second dam Handoverthecat (Tale of the Cat) passed away in 2017. Third dam Frayne (Red Ransom), who was sent to Saudi Arabia in 2011, is a full-sister to GSW Wandering Star.

Muth is the second 'Rising Star' for sire Good Magic, with other being Blazing Sevens, who was second in this year's GI Preakness S.
