Gun Runner Sets All-Time Earnings Record For First-Crop Sire

Three Chimneys' Gun Runner, the 2017 Horse of the Year and the Leading Sire of Two Year Olds worldwide as well as the Leading Freshman Sire in 2021, has established an all-time progeny earnings record for a first crop sire, eclipsing super sire Uncle Mo's first crop earnings record established in 2015. To put the significance of this accomplishment into perspective, Uncle Mo's first crop earnings surpassed the previous record established by the legendary Tapit back in 2008.

The previous first crop progeny earnings record of $3,670,354 as reported by the Blood-Horse and $3,717,490 as reported by the TDN, was surpassed today when the Tom Amoss-trained Shotgun Hottie won a $92,000 MSW race at Churchill, becoming winner number 22, boosting Gun Runner's earnings over $3.8 million. Gun Runner's milestone earnings record mirrors that of Uncle Mo's, having sired two Grade 1 winners including a Breeders' Cup champion. Their records differ, however, in that Gun Runner has sired one more graded stakes winner than Uncle Mo, with fewer starters.

“Gun Runner's record start at stud is a crowning achievement for the farm and its philosophy.” said Three Chimneys' owner Gonçalo Torrealba. “To surpass a record established by Uncle Mo, and Tapit previous to that, clearly compares Gun Runner favorably at this point in time with two of the most influential sires at stud today. He not only established a new progeny earnings record but he is also the leading sire in America by percent stakes winner to runners among all sires, pretty astonishing. Three Chimneys' whole team is grateful to the breeders who continue to support him with great mares, and a special thanks to partner Ron Winchell. He has been fantastic. I am grateful for his continued commitment to breed his best mares and race their progeny. Trainer Steve Asmussen has created his legacy through Horse of the Year Gun Runner and his progeny. Thank you, Steve.”

Gun Runner Breaks Freshman Progeny Earnings Mark

Three Chimneys' Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) set a new record for progeny earnings for a first-crop sire when his total moved past the $3.8-million mark Sunday. Coolmore's Uncle Mo held the previous record of $3,717,490, which he established in 2015. Prior to Uncle Mo, the first-crop progeny earnings record had been held by Gainesway's Tapit, who set the mark in 2008.

Gun Runner took over the record earnings figure when the Tom Amoss-trained Shotgun Hottie won a $92,000 maiden special weight at Churchill Downs Sunday, becoming the stallion's 22nd winner.

Gun Runner's record start at stud is a crowning achievement for the farm and its philosophy,” said Three Chimneys' owner Goncalo Torrealba. “To surpass a record established by Uncle Mo, and Tapit previous to that, clearly compares Gun Runner favorably at this point in time with two of the most influential sires at stud today. He not only established a new progeny earnings record, but he is also the Leading Sire in America by percent Stakes Winner to runners among all sires, pretty astonishing. I am grateful for his continued commitment to breed his best mares and race their progeny. Trainer Steve Asmussen has created his legacy through Horse of the Year Gun Runner and his progeny. Thank you, Steve.”

From his first crop to race this year, Gun Runner has been represented by GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and expected champion Echo Zulu, as well as GI Hopeful S. winner Gunite and graded winners Pappacap and Wicked Halo.

Echo Zulu, Gunite and Wicked Halo are all trained by Asmussen, who conditioned Gun Runner to a Horse of the Year title in 2017, and are owned or co-owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds, which, along with Three Chimneys, campaigned the stallion to six Grade I victories.

Gun Runner will stand the 2022 breeding season at $125,000.

Three Chimneys Reduces Stud Fees for 2021

Three Chimneys Farm is the second stud farm in as many days to release a roster of reduced stud fees for the 2021 season due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The historic farm’s 2021 roster is headlined by Horse of the Year Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) at $50,000 LFS&N. The six-time Grade I winner, who was represented by his first yearlings this season, stood for $70,000 in 2020.

“The industry finds itself in unusual times,” said Three Chimneys Chairman Goncalo Torrealba. “One can take comfort in knowing that notwithstanding the challenges of this past year, the thoroughbred industry proved that it can adapt by working together. In that spirit, we have made the decision to lower stud fees for the upcoming breeding season to accommodate fellow breeders.”

Palace Malice (Curlin) was up from $15,000 in 2019 to $25,000 in 2020 courtesy of Structor, a colt from his first-crop who won the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf last year. He was reduced to $20,000 LFS&N for 2021.

New to the roster is the recently retired Grade I winner Volatile (Violence), who was given an introductory fee of $17,500 LFS&N.

The rest of the 2021 roster is as follows with all fees LFS&N: Fast Anna (Medaglia d’Oro), dropped from $10,000 to $5,000; Sky Mesa (Pulpit) who went from $15,000 to $12,500; Sharp Azteca (Freud), reduced from $10,000 to $6,500; champion Will Take Charge (Unbridled’s Song), cut from $15,000 to $5,000; and Funtastic (More Than Ready), who remains at $5,000.

Gun Runner Leads Three Chimneys’ 2021 Stallion Roster

Three Chimneys Farm announced its stud fees and roster for the 2021 breeding season.

“The industry finds itself in unusual times,” said Three Chimneys Chairman Gonçalo Torrealba. “One can take comfort in knowing that notwithstanding the challenges of this past year, the Thoroughbred industry proved that it can adapt by working together. In that spirit, we have made the decision to lower stud fees for the upcoming breeding season to accommodate fellow breeders.”

Horse of the Year Gun Runner enjoyed extraordinary success in the sales ring again this year with 40 yearlings averaging $267,750, with yearlings selling for up to $775,000. He was the leading first-crop sire at both Fasig-Tipton and Keeneland September.

As a group, his yearlings were consistently well-balanced, athletic and looked precocious and fast. The right buyers signed the tickets which means they will end up in the hands of the world's best trainers. The farm holds high hopes for the six-time Grade 1 winning son of Candy Ride.

Palace Malice ended last year with a Grade 1 winner in Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Structor who was hammered down as a 2-year-old for $850,000. He was one of five first crop stakes winners along with other Graded Stakes Winners Mr. Monomoy and Fly on Angel.

“Three Chimneys is also very pleased to introduce Volatile as the newest addition to the roster,” said Three Chimneys board member Doug Cauthen. “An absolutely gorgeous horse who sold as a yearling for $850,000, he truly has what every commercial breeder is looking for – brilliant speed, a top pedigree and a great physical. His sire Violence, the likely successor to Medaglia d'Oro, is currently the leading sire of Grade 1 winners this year. His pedigree further recommends him as a stallion being out of a stakes-winning Unbridled's Song daughter of the legendary and lightning fast Lady Tak.

“The model of consistency as a racehorse, Volatile posted a 112 Beyer, the fastest of the year, while winning the Aristides at Churchill by eight lengths, stopping the clock for six panels in 1:07.57,” Cauthen continued. “His win in the Grade 1 Vanderbilt at Saratoga, against a field loaded with all Grade 1 winners, saw him with the fastest final quarter in the history of the race.”

The 2021 fees are as follows:

Gun Runner – $50,000 LFS&N

Palace Malice – $20,000 LFS&N

Volatile (NEW) – $17,500 LFS&N

Sky Mesa – $12,500

Sharp Azteca – $6,500 LFS&N

Fast Anna – $5,000 LFS&N

Will Take Charge – $5,000 LFS&N

Funtastic – $5,000 LFS&N
