Classy Godolphin Runners to be Sold at ERA Racing in Dubai Sale

Royal Ascot and Dubai Carnival winners feature among 48 lots set to be offered by Godolphin at the 2024 Emirates Racing Authority (ERA) Racing in Dubai Sale, which will be staged at Meydan Racecourse on Tuesday, March 26, four days before the Dubai World Cup meeting.

Godolphin have sold over 450 horses at the ERA Racing in Dubai Sale since it was introduced in December 2015. They include the former Charlie Appleby trainee North America (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who later won at the top level for Satish Seemar having been bought for AED140,000 (approximately €35,000) in 2016.

Drafted (Field Commission) was another high-profile graduate after being purchased for just AED40,000 (€10,000) in 2017 as he went on to become a five-time winner at Meydan, notably landing a pair of Group 3 races at the track. He was trained by Doug Watson, who has since enjoyed more success with a similar recruit in Golden Goal (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), a Group 2 winner following his sale for AED210,000 (€53,000) in 2018.

Of the 48 lots consigned by Godolphin this year, 22 of them are by Dubawi, including the five-year-old Secret State (Ire) (lot 41), who gained his biggest success when winning the 2022 King George V H. at Royal Ascot. His sire is also represented by the likes of Goldspur (Ire) (lot 32), who won the G3 Zetland S. at Newmarket as a juvenile and still has relatively few miles on the clock for one of his age, and First Ruler (GB) (lot 36), a full-brother to Ghaiyyath (Ire) who was successful at last year's Dubai Carnival. Venetian Style (GB) (lot 40), who topped the 2021 Tattersalls December Foal Sale at 1.8 million gns, is also catalogued after being placed recently at Chelmsford.

As for proven performers at the 2024 Carnival, Ruling Dynasty (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) (lot 46) is set to go under the hammer having been among the winners at Meydan as recently as last month, while Highbank (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) (lot 47) should also attract plenty of interest having been beaten just a length when filling the runner-up spot on his most recent outing at the track.

“Marie Sullivan [Godolphin's bloodstock sales manager] said that these are the best of the horses that Godolphin are selling,” summed up Sam Shinsky, the ERA's head of integrity and regulation. “They sell a lot of horses, but the best ones that they're going to sell are kept for this sale.

“I think there are 22 sons of Dubawi and they're obviously well sought-after, versatile horses who go on both surfaces. A lot of the time with these horses–as we've seen with North America–they're untried on dirt, so some of them really take to it and end up having a second lease of life out here. Every year a decent horse or two comes out of it. This year we've got 48 lots and I'm sure something from it will go on to be a success.”

The ERA Racing in Dubai Sale was first introduced with the main objective being to increase racehorse ownership within the UAE. As such, there is a condition in place which prevents horses purchased at the sale from being exported until the completion of the 2024/25 racing season [April 2025].

Explaining why the restriction is in place, Shinsky added, “These horses could be sold back in the UK and probably make more money there. But the idea is to try and increase or maintain our thoroughbred population and give people who are living over here–or anybody who wants to race a horse over here–an opportunity to buy a well-bred horse at a discounted rate compared to what you'd have to pay elsewhere.”

Mike Kaye, the founder and principal of Touch Gold Racing, is a big advocate of what the ERA is trying to do with a sale which has been the source of two of the syndicate's most successful horses, Raven's Corner (Ire) (Raven's Pass) and Leading Spirit (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}).

G3 Dubawi S. winner Raven's Corner was bought for AED135,000 (€34,000) by trainer Satish Seemar in 2016, while Leading Spirit was secured for AED400,000 (€101,000) in 2018 and now has his sights set on the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen on World Cup night having guaranteed his place in the field with victory in the G3 Mahab Al Shimaal on Super Saturday.

“It's a great opportunity for a syndicate like us,” Kaye said of the sale. “The horses are very well-bred and every sale produces a few horses that go on to be competitive at Group level and even run on World Cup night.

“The sale has definitely become more popular, and the prices seem to rise year on year, but hopefully we'll still be able to find some value. More importantly, the sale helps boost the quality of the local horse population, so it's definitely important that they continue to enforce that the horses can't be immediately exported to race elsewhere.”

Looking ahead to this year's sale, Kaye added, “We'll do the work as usual and then see how the prices are. There are plenty of nice types on paper, but you never really know until you see them in the flesh whether they look like they will take to training and racing on dirt. It would certainly be nice to find another Raven's Corner or Leading Spirit, though!”

Kodiac’s El Bodegon In Group 1 Breakthrough

Already well-acquainted with France, with two prior visits culminating in a success in the nine-furlong G3 Prix de Conde at Chantilly Sept. 29, Nas Syndicate and Anne O'Callaghan's El Bodegon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) made all to collect in Saturday's G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. Providing up-and-coming trainer James Ferguson with a first top-level win in the process, the 9-1 shot dominated the mile-and-a-quarter contest under 2021's supersub jockey Ioritz Mendizabal and after shaking off the threat of Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in early straight hit the line with 1 1/2 lengths to spare over Ballydoyle's Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). The 7-5 favourite Goldspur held on for third, 1 1/4 lengths away.

Dubawi’s Goldspur Wins The Zetland

Labelled a TDN Rising Star on his winning debut at Sandown Sept. 15, Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) got Godolphin and Charlie Appleby's Future Champions Day at Newmarket off to a flyer on Saturday as he mastered Unconquerable (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) and stablemate Hafit (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in a thrilling finale to the 10-furlong G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S. Unable to gain extra experience following his debut 6 1/2-length romp when withdrawn from Epsom's Cazoo Derby “Wild Card” EBF Conditions S. after becoming upset in the stalls, Goldspur put that behind him here to travel sweetly for James Doyle away from the 6-4 favourite Hafit as the pair led the way. With Unconquerable joining in two out, they were in line with the lead swapped between them but near the line it was the 5-2 second favourite who gave extra to beat the Irish challenger by a head, with Hafit only a short head behind. “It felt as if he had improved since Sandown and there was no real second to him that day, but that form had taken a couple of knocks since and he'd had that minor mishap at Epsom in between,” the winning rider said. “Today, he was foot-perfect and travelled really well–those other horses had the advantage of experience over him and probably ran straighter down into the 'dip', so to finish off best is pleasing.”

Doyle revealed that Goldspur had been hard for Charlie Appleby and William Buick to weigh up at home. “He's been difficult to assess and when they galloped together Hafit was far better. Charlie didn't expect what he did at Sandown, as he hadn't shown that at home but that's not a bad way to be. For a big fellow, he's going to be versatile I think regards to the ground. It's still a little bit dead here, but he's a good mover. He actually travelled best of the three, but wobbled under pressure in the dip and then got going again when he met the rising ground. He's a big relentless galloper who clearly sleeps at home.”

Appleby added, “Full credit to Jerry and Tom and the team back at home; they've done a great job with this horse. He's a nice homebred with a nice staying page. He's only come of late and it's all about next year with him. We'll start off with some of the trials in the spring maybe. I think that he could make up into a Derby horse, as he has definitely got the page for it and he has done nothing wrong at the moment apart from one little blip which has been ironed out.”
Donnacha O'Brien said of the runner-up, who was advertising the form of the Sept. 25 G2 Royal Lodge S. in which he was third last time, “He ran a cracker and is still learning. He's a big horse and there is a bit of improvement in him as well. We could look at the 10-furlong race in France [the Oct. 23 G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud] next time–it didn't look like he was stopping there and he's a big tough horse who is clear-winded so usually when they have those qualities they go on any ground.”

Goldspur is the fourth foal out of the talented G2 Lanchashire Oaks and G3 Prix Minerve winner Pomology (Arch), who was also runner-up in the G1 Prix Vermeille. She is kin to the Listed Garrowby S. winner Tommy Taylor (Mizzen Mast) and the GI Just a Game S. and GI American Oaks runner-up Sassy Little Lila (Artie Schiller). This is also the family of the GI Turf Classic Invitational-winning sire Apple Tree (Fr) and the G3 Prix de Royaumont runner-up American Apples (Fr) (American Post {GB}). Pomology's filly foal is by Night of Thunder (Ire).

Dubawi Colt A New Rising Star At Sandown

Godolphin's annus mirabilis shows no sign of halting, with Wednesday's “Breeders' Day” card at Sandown playing host to one of the operation's more promising juveniles seen out so far. Debuting over a mile on soft ground in the Time Test EBF Novice S., the Charlie Appleby-trained colt Goldspur (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) streaked to a 6 1/2-length success to become the 16th TDN Rising Star by his sire sensation. Out of the G2 Lancashire Oaks and G3 Prix Minerve winner Pomology (Arch), the bay raced in second throughout the early stages under James Doyle behind another newcomer in the Andrew Balding-trained Wolsey (Kitten's Joy). Sent past that rival with under two furlongs remaining, the 2-1 favourite surged clear for an emphatic success, with Tying the Knot (Noble Mission {GB}) two lengths further behind in third. “We were on a fact-finding mission, rather than knowing exactly what he could do,” Doyle admitted. “He didn't begin all that well, but he was quickly into stride. He was very straightforward and he seemed to be a quick learner. We didn't go very quick, as we were mindful of these testing conditions, but I got him on the move around the two there and he stretched really nicely on that ground. His dam stayed very well and was a high-quality mare, so it gave us confidence that he would hit the line today.”

Appleby was thinking about the 10-furlong G3 Godolphin Flying Start Zetland S. at Newmarket Oct. 9 for Goldspur. “I was pleased with that run. He is a horse that has got plenty of stamina in his pedigree there, so he will be a mile-and-a-half horse for next year,” he said. “Going forward, we look at stepping him up to a mile and a quarter and point him at something like the Zetland Stakes, as that will suit him. I'm very pleased that he is a big-margin winner, but soft ground has come into play for him there.”

Goldspur is the fourth foal out of Pomology, who raced for John Gosden and won her first four starts, including the aforementioned Minerve and Lancashire Oaks, before running second on what would be her career finale in the G1 Prix Vermeille of 2014. The stakes-winning second dam Sharp Apple (Diesis {GB}) also produced the listed-winning sprinter Tommy Taylor (Mizzen Mast) and Sassy Little Lila (Artie Schiller) who was runner-up in the GI Just a Game S. and GI American Oaks. From the family of the GI Turf Classic Invitational-winning sire Apple Tree (Fr) and the G3 Prix de Royaumont runner-up American Apples (Fr) (American Post {GB}), Pomology's 2021 filly is by Night of Thunder (Ire).
