MGSW Mr. Money Retired to Journeyman Stud

Mr. Money (Goldencents–Plenty O’Toole, by Tiznow) has been retired from racing and will enter stud in 2021 at Brent and Crystal Fernung’s Journeyman Stud in Ocala, Florida. Mr. Money will stand as the property of Allied Racing LLC and Spendthrift Farm for $5,000 live foal in the 2021 breeding season.

During his juvenile season, Mr. Money hit the board in his first two starts before breaking his maiden by 3 3/4 lengths going a mile and a sixteenth at Churchill Downs. The bay rounded out the season with a fourth behind Game Winner (Candy Ride {Arg}) in the GI Sentient Jet Breeder’s Cup Juvenile.

At three, the Bret Calhoun trainee annexed the GIII Pat Day S., GIII Matt Winn S., GIII Indiana Derby and GIII West Virginia Derby before finishing second, beaten a nose, by Math Wizard (Algorithms) in the $1,000,000 GI Pennsylvania Derby, finishing ahead of GI Preakness S. winner War of Will (War Front), GISW Improbable (City Zip), and GI Breeder’s Cup Dirt Mile winner, Spun to Run (Hard Spun). This term, the 4-year-old won the GIII Ack Ack S. and retires with six wins from 18 starts and earnings of $1,360,430.

“Mr. Money is as well named as a horse can be,” Brent Fernung said. “He went where the big money was and took home a bunch of it. He won four consecutive graded stakes as a three-year-old and probably should have won the Pennsylvania Derby as well!”

He continued, “As a son of leading third crop sire, Goldencents, Mr. Money brings that super prolific Into Mischief sire line to Florida in the form of a truly top racehorse.”

Mr. Money is the second foal out of the Tiznow mare, Plenty O’Toole. She has three other foals of racing age, including additional winner Julia’s Kitty. Plenty O’Toole’s stakes producing dam, O’Toole (Distorted Humor), is a full-sister to G1 Dubai World Cup winner, Well Armed who earned over $5 million.

Chester Thomas, whose Allied Racing LLC raced Mr. Money in partnership with Spendthrift Farm said, “I couldn’t be more proud to stand Mr. Money at Journeyman Stud. He was an incredibly talented race horse with tons of class coupled with speed and endurance. I intend to breed a dozen or so of my own mares to Mr. Money. I have a huge amount of confidence in him.”

What’s In a Name: Incitato

Mad Roman Emperor Caligula tried to make his favorite horse INCITATUS a consul, according to legend–and the accounts of maybe partisan historians Suetonius and Cassius Dio.

Clearly aware of this spectacular milestone of executive overreach, Dante Zanelli’s wife Yolanda Del Rosario gave the Italian version of the name–INCITATO–to the colt by GOLDENCENTS out ZABEEL SARAY (by GIROLAMO) her husband bought at Fasig Tipton as a yearling last October. INCITATO, whose literal translation would be “incited” or “spurred”, won his maiden spectacularly in Peru in October and now goes for a Grade 2 on Saturday. Let’s hope this tenacious colt with a powerful closing style creates his own legend.

IN PERU: Incitato, c, 2, Goldencents–Zabeel Saray, by Girolamo. Monterrico, 10-17, Maiden, 1900mT. B-Columbiana Farm LLC (KY). *$7,000 Ylg ’19 FTKOCT.

‘We Are All In This Together’: Spendthrift Reduces Most Stud Fees For 2021

Wayne Hughes' Spendthrift Farm announced reduced stud fees for most of its current roster of stallions set to stand at the Lexington-based farm in 2021.

“Breeders are the backbone of our industry, and the bottom line is that stud farms only go as breeders go. We are all in this together,” Hughes said. “Our team recognizes the challenges of the times and how the entire breeding community has been affected this year. If we had room to lower a stud fee, we did it. We wish every participant in this great industry the best of luck and the best of health in 2021.”

Reigning champion general sire Into Mischief heads the roster yet again at a previously announced fee of $225,000 S&N and is booked full. He represents the only stallion with an increased fee in 2021.

Perennial leading sire Malibu Moon and popular second-season sire Omaha Beach will both stand for $35,000 S&N. Fellow second-season sire Vino Rosso, last year's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) hero, will stand for $25,000 S&N. Multiple Grade 1-winning juvenile Bolt d'Oro, 2019 Eclipse Champion Sprinter Mitole, and the Northern Hemisphere's No. 1 Third-Crop Sire Goldencents will all stand for $15,000 S&N.

Spendthrift will also add multiple Grade 1-winning millionaire Vekoma new to its stallion ranks. The Met Mile-winning son of Candy Ride (Arg) is set to compete in the Breeders' Cup next month at Keeneland. His fee will be announced upon retirement.

Mr. Money Rides Rail To Victory In Ack Ack At Churchill Downs

Allied Racing Stable and Spendthrift Farm's 4-year-old Goldencents colt, Mr. Money, saved ground throughout under Gabriel Saez, coming from off the pace to win Saturday's Grade 3 Ack Ack Stakes by 1 1/4 lengths at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

Bourbon Calling finished second, with Thirstforlife third and Dinar fourth in the field of 13 older runners going a one-turn mile on a fast dirt tracksa. Mr. Money covered the distance in 1:34.85, a stakes record, and paid $14.80.

Mr. Money is trained by Bret Calhoun.

Warrior's Charge, the 6-5 favorite, broke from the rail and set a quick pace, going the opening quarter in :22.61 and half mile in :44.48. American Anthem and Pioneer Spirit applied pressure on the frontrunner as the field turned into the stretch after six furlongs in 1:09.11, with 65-1 shot Pioneer Spirit poking his nose in front briefly at the top of the stretch.

Mr. Money, never far back, found a perfect spot on the rail in the long run down the backstretch and never left the wood, going through an opening in the stretch when  Warrior's Charge drifted out and hitting the front inside the furlong pole.

“We sat a perfect trip,” said Saez. “This horse hasn't had things go his way this year and showed us the real Mr. Money today.”

The victory was the first for Mr. Money in five starts this year. He put together a four-race win streak of Grade 3 stakes in 2019 – the Pat Day Mile, Matt Winn Stakes, Indiana Derby and West Virginia Derby – then was beaten a neck in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby before finishing seventh in the G1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

Bred in Kentucky by Spruce Lane Farm, Mr. Money has now won six of 17 career starts.

“Gabe worked out a perfect trip on him,” said Calhoun. “I thought his last few tries weren't a fair assessment of who this horse is. He showed us who he was today. He loves this track and got to run out of his own stall.”

Calhoun said Mr. Money may make a second run in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, to be run at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

“Fingers crossed that will take us to the Breeders' Cup,” Allied Racing's Chester Thomas said. “We are so thrilled for this horse, Bret, his entire team and Gabe.”
