Goldencents Colt Graduates Nicely at Keeneland

LUGAN KNIGHT (c, 2, Goldencents–Sly Roxy, by Speightstown) was outfinished by the impressive Protege (Good Magic) on Churchill debut Sept. 21 and was off at 97 cents on the dollar to go one better Friday afternoon. Away a touch slowly from the inside gate, the homebred tucked in just behind the leading trio in fourth down the backstretch and traveled on the bridle on the turn. The favorite was ridden for luck into the stretch and was stymied with about three-sixteenths of a mile to race, but he punched through gamely three off the inside entering the final furlong and fought on gamely for the victory, the second of the meet for these connections. Carcano (Bolt d'Oro), the second betting choice at 38-10, raced farther back in the field and in a fair amount of kickback over what appeared to be a loose surface for the opening half-mile. Produced wide into the stretch, he stood to be the chief beneficiary when Lugan Knight was short of room, taking the lead between calls, but he was outgamed to the line. Lugan Knight is the first offspring for his dam, a daughter of two-time Sovereign Award winner Roxy Gap (Indian Charlie), whose four winners from five to race include Peter Brant's GIII Pucker Up S. heroine Cafe Americano (Medaglia d'Oro). Sly Roxy is the dam of a yearling colt from the second crop of Mendelssohn–a half-brother to Into Mischief– and most recently visited Instagrand (Into Mischief). Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $80,575. Into Mischief Tops Spendthrift’s 2023 Stud Fees

Into Mischief once again leads Spendthrift Farm's roster for 2023 with his stud fee remaining at $250,000 S&N, the operation announced Thursday.

Spendthrift has added four new stallions including MGISWs Jackie's Warrior (Maclean's Music) and Cyberknife (Gun Runner), who are both pointing for the Breeders' Cup. The other new additions are GI Belmont S. winner Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) and GSW Greatest Honour (Tapit), who are both available for inspection at the farm.

Champion Jackie's Warrior, the likely favorite in the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint, will command a fee of $50,000 S&N. GI Arkansas Derby and GI Haskell Invitational S. winner Cyberknife's fee will be determined after he runs in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic. Mo Donegal, who retired shortly after his Classic victory, will stand for $20,000 S&N. While regally bred Greatest Honour will be at an introductory fee of $7,500 S&N.

“We are extremely excited about the new stallions we are bringing in for 2023. They represent exactly what we hope to do each year, in terms of offering quality and value at all levels of the market,” said Ned Toffey, Spendthrift general manager. “Jackie's Warrior is a brilliantly fast champion and one of the most decorated racehorses to come around in recent years. Mo Donegal is a graded winner at two and classic winner at three. Cyberknife won two of the most high-profile Grade Is for 3-year-olds, and Greatest Honour has a rare combination of talent, looks and pedigree that you don't find often at his level of the market. From $50,000 on down to $7,500, all four of these horses were precocious, displayed immense talent, are tremendous physicals, and possess the sire power breeders are looking for.”

Into Mischief's GI Kentucky Derby-winning son and Horse of the Year Authentic will stand for $60,000 S&N for his third season, down $10,000 from last year. Meanwhile Bolt d'Oro will see his fee increase on the back of a strong freshman season, going from $20,000 to $35,000 S&N.

Omaha Beach and Yaupon will remain at $30,000 S&N. Omaha Beach's yearlings have proven quite popular, making him the leader in his class at the recent yearling auctions. Yaupon is standing his second season this year.

Spendthrift's stallions under $20,000 are led by champion Vino Rosso at $15,000 S&N, down from $20,000 last year. MGISW Vekoma and champion Mitole will also stand for $15,000 S&N. Mitole's fee is unchanged from last year and Vekoma is down slightly from $17,500. Goldencents, Known Agenda, Rock Your World and Jimmy Creed will all stand for $10,000 S&N.

Not Her First ‘Rodeo’

For the second year in a row, Going To Vegas (Goldencents) led past every pole and proved an easy winner of the GI Rodeo Drive S. at Santa Anita, punching her ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf in Lexington four weeks down the road. Kentucky raider Family Way (Uncle Mo), narrowly second in the wagering ahead of Going To Vegas, ran on late to complete the exacta, while longshot Bellamore (Empire Maker) spiced up the exotics in third. Fluffy Socks (Slumber {GB}), the 3-2 chalk, could manage only fourth after covering stacks of ground on the bend.

Going To Vegas bounced well from gate three and had some early company in the form of Neige Blanche (Fr) (Anodin {Ire}), but that one backed off a bit and Umberto Rispoli did his best to put Going To Vegas to sleep through an opening couple of furlongs in a moderate :23.82. Ears pricked as they turned up the backstretch, Going To Vegas continued to lob them along, having gotten a nice breather in the middle furlongs, and took the Rodeo Drive field into the second turn after three-quarters in 1:13.42. Rispoli began to up the tempo as they hit the three-eighths, and his mare kicked smartly when asked for her best in upper stretch and proved not for catching.

“We were expecting to go to the lead,” said Rispoli. “We had the same plan and everything worked well. I haven't been on her since last March, but she gave me that same feeling as the last time. At the top of the stretch, she took off. She felt good, was really relaxed and she did everything. She always responds. I think she really loves this track. It's on to Keeneland.”

Going To Vegas was 11th of 12 in last year's Filly & Mare Turf, an 11-furlong race at Del Mar and a distance that was always going to stretch her. Campaigned over more suitable trips this term, the one-time claimer was runner-up in the one-mile GII Buena Vista S. Mar. 5 and again in the GIII Santa Ana S. at this distance three weeks later. Beaten a half-length into second in the GI Gamely S. going nine panels May 30, she was a troubled third when last seen in Del Mar's GII John C. Mabee S. at a mile and an eighth Sept. 10.

Pedigree Notes:

One of two winners from two to race for her dam, Going To Vegas is a half-sister to the 2-year-old filly Brand Loyalty (Grazen). The stakes-winning Hard to Resist foaled a colt by Om (Munnings), then was purchased by Matt Dorman's Determined Stud for $350,000 when offered back in foal to Grazen at last year's Fasig-Tipton November Sale. The mare produced a colt Feb. 20 of this year and was among the first book sent to Charlatan.

Mr. Money Relocated to Louisiana

MGSW & GISP Mr. Money (Goldencents–Plenty O'Toole, by Tiznow) will relocate from Florida to Louisiana's Clear Creek Stud. Spendthrift Farm also is a partner in Mr. Money with owner Chester Thomas.

“I just really like the way the Louisiana program is heading,” said Thomas. “I think Mr. Money has everything it takes to be a successful sire, and I believe having him at a top farm in a growing regional market gives him the best chance to show what he can do. Most of my horses race in New Orleans in the winter anyway, and I'm sure going to have a lot of Louisiana-bred Mr. Money babies. I thought I might just as well take advantage of having Louisiana-sired as well as Louisiana-born Mr. Moneys.”

Mr. Money won six of 18 starts and amassed over $1.3 million in earnings. Five of those six victories came in Grade III events and he also finished second in the GI Pennsylvania Derby.
