Catching Up with 2013-14 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Winner Goldencents

The only two-time winner of the Dirt Mile to date, Goldencents had gameness written all over him. The Equibase chart for his second Breeders' Cup win summed up much of his career: “gunned hard,” “met the oncoming challenge,” and “dug in tenaciously.”

“Goldencents was a special horse for us because he is the first horse that really began to put Into Mischief on the map,” said Ned Toffey, general manager of Spendthrift Farm. “He and [MGSW & MGISP] Vyjack came out of Into Mischief's first crop. Obviously he went on to be a Breeders' Cup Dirt mile winner, the second win of which was in incredible fashion. He really began to elevate Into Mischief into the status of being a truly elite sire, and then he came to stud, had success, and began to set the stage for Into Mischief to become a sire of sires. He has really meant a lot to Into Mischief's career and to Spendthrift.”

Vino Rosso’s Laugh Now On Cue Breaking Maiden as Sire’s First Winner

2nd-Horseshoe Indianapolis, $34,000, Msw, 5-15, 2yo, 4 1/2f, :52.90, ft, 2 lengths.
LAUGH NOW (c, 2, Vino Rosso–Little Pao, by Tiznow) had the last laugh here, and broke his maiden as well as tallied the first victory as a sire for Vino Rosso (by Curlin). The stallion also had  the third place finisher Zaino in the Royal Palm Juvenile S., a qualifier for Royal Ascot. Eighth last out at Keeneland Apr. 27 after breaking inward and tiring on that unveiling, conditioner John Ennis armed his colt with a pair of first-time blinkers here, and the 2-1 shot did not disappoint. Dueling briefly with firster Untroubled (World of Trouble) before drawing away from that challenger, the bay held firm over his early shadow by two lengths on the wire in :52.90 for the trip.

The second to the races for a young mare, Laugh Now is her last registered foal thus far, though the mare did visit Goldencents for 2023. Dam Little Pao is a half-sister to SW Carson City Babe (Carson City)–herself dam of SP Monster Wave (Stormy Atlantic); SW Pressed (Chester House); stakes-placed Silver Indy (Silver Charm) and Court Mischief (Empire Maker); and the dam of SP Diva Treva (Outwork). Seven Horses Supplemented To Keeneland April Sale

A total of 121 horses, including seven horses in the latest round of supplements, have been cataloged to Keeneland's April Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale.

“We've been able to recruit some recent winners to the April Sale, and several horses have won during the Keeneland Spring Meet,” Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “There's a lot of quality through the catalog, so it's a very dynamic sale that has evolved nicely over the last couple of years.”

The latest group of seven supplements to the April Sale includes: Commissioner Dan (Constitution), Curlin Serenade (Curlin), Linguistic (Flatter), and Mailman Money (Goldencents).

Veteran Trainer Howard Zucker Passes At 74

Veteran trainer Howard Zucker, a well-respected Southern California horseman, passed away Thursday at USC Keck Hospital in Los Angeles at age 74.

Based in New York prior to coming to Southern California in 1980, Zucker trained for a brief time for NBA Lakers owner Jerry Buss. Born May 20, 1948, Zucker saddled his last winner July 24, as his 3-year-old filly Gracelund Gray (Goldencents) won at Del Mar.

Affable and a dedicated Yankees fan, Zucker was also a staunch advocate for the horse, evidenced by his multiple leadership roles with the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA). Zucker joined the board of directors of CARMA in May 2009 and served in many leadership positions including as CARMA President from 2016-2019.

“I am devastated by the news of Howard's passing yesterday,” Lucinda Lovitt, CARMA Executive Director. “He was a tireless champion for the horses and believed so strongly in CARMA's mission, I just can't imagine our board without him. I know I speak for the entire CARMA Board of Directors when I say he will be greatly, greatly missed.”

Zucker's top horse was Crafty C.T. (Crafty Prospector), who won the 2001 GII San Rafael S. with Eddie Delahoussaye aboard and was subsequently second to Point Given in the GI Santa Anita Derby. Zucker had 2,223 career starts as a trainer and 246 wins. He is survived by his wife Lorraine. Memorial services are undetermined at this time.
