Earthlight Put To The Test

Godolphin’s unbeaten Earthlight (Ire) (Shamardal) faces his first major test of 2020 in a strong renewal of Sunday’s 6 1/2-furlong G1 LARC Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville. Facing the older sprinters for the first time, last year’s G1 Prix Morny and G1 Middle Park S. winner also meets Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}) who was a neck behind him when runner-up in the Middle Park at Newmarket in September. There was no sign that his delayed start to the season had meant a diminishing of his ability when he took the Listed Prix Kistena over six furlongs here on July 12 and Andre Fabre said he is happy with his preparation, if wary of the size of the task ahead. “Earthlight’s juvenile form is among the best around and he comes into this race in excellent condition,” he said. “I’m a bit worried if a race like this might just be coming a bit soon for him, he’s only had one run this season, which he found very easy. He’s having to take on older horses as well, but we’ll see. He had that interruption to the start of his season, which hasn’t been ideal.”

Also from Godolphin is ‘TDN Rising Star’ Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), who is on a roll over seven furlongs having annexed the G3 Prix de la Porte Maillot at ParisLongchamp on June 25 and the G2 Lennox S. at Goodwood on July 28. He was only beaten a length when third in this 12 months ago and is probably an improved performer. “Space Blues has come out of the Lennox S. in good form. He ran well in this race last year and, with the way he has performed so far this year, we are heading back very confident that he can run a big race,” Charlie Appleby said. “Every time he has stepped up in grade this season, he has won more impressively, while he has performed well at Group 1 level on both his previous starts at Deauville. He ran very well in it last year and a repeat performance of that or what he has done this year is going to make him a live player.”

Golden Horde has stepped up this year, winning the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot on June 19 before finishing third in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket on July 11. Trainer Clive Cox commented, “He is drawn 10 of 11, but I’m very happy with the horse. This is a very competitive Group 1, especially with Earthlight in there, who we have form with from last year. In the Morny he beat us quite convincingly, although our horse ran well, and we closed the gap by the end of the year in the Middle Park. I think an extra half a furlong will be no problem for us. I’m quite excited and looking forward to it. I think home territory might be a slight advantage, with the heat we have at the moment, but that said, apart from the journey it will be the same for all of us. He won well at Royal Ascot first time out and ran well in defeat in the July Cup. I’m still full of hope and admiration for our horse.”

Another Royal Ascot winner in the line-up is Haras d’Etreham and Cambridge Stud’s Hello Youmzain (Fr) (Kodiac {GB}), who took the G1 Diamond Jubilee S. on June 20. Only fifth in the July Cup, he has to bounce back. Jockey Kevin Stott said, “I think he’ll like the track, as he didn’t come down the hill particularly well at Newmarket and the extra half a furlong will be right up his street. I’m really excited. He’s a very laid-back horse who takes everything in his stride.” Aidan O’Brien’s duo are the July 12 G1 Prix Jean Prat runner-up Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and Wichita (Ire) (No Nay Never), who drops back in trip after his second in the June 6 G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, third in the G1 St James’s Palace S. at Royal Ascot on June 20 and fifth in the G1 Sussex S. at Goodwood on July 29.

Phoenix Headlines Curragh Card

The Curragh features a fascinating clash of the precocious juveniles in the G1 Keeneland Phoenix S., with Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez’s recent purchase Steel Bull (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) stepping up to six furlongs following his success in Goodwood’s G3 Molecomb S. on July 29. Qatar Racing’s June 19 G2 Norfolk S. winner The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) renews rivalry with Middleham Park Racing’s Ventura Tormenta (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), with the latter denying him by the narrowest of margins in the G2 Prix Robert Papin over this trip at Chantilly on July 19. “The Molecomb winner was very impressive and Group 1s are never easy, but the horse seems in good form so we’ve got our fingers crossed,” trainer Michael Bell said of The Lir Jet. “He was in front before and just after the line in Chantilly, a real case of heads up, heads down, but unfortunately ours was up where it mattered. The horse who beat him is obviously a good horse in his own right. I don’t think he’s an out-and-out 2-year-old–you wouldn’t think it looking at him, as he’s a scopey sort. Hopefully the Commonwealth Cup might be on his agenda next season.”

Richard Hannon is hoping Ventura Tormenta can uphold the Robert Papin and said of him, “He is an Acclamation and he does exactly what it says on the tin. He is a reliable worker and is as good an Acclamation as we have had. They are rock hard and are made for racing and he is no different. In France it looked to me like he was running for second or third, but he stuck at it very well. This is another step up and he needs to find more, but he improved from his last run so hopefully he can do the same again.”

Also in the line-up is the July 18 G2 Railway S. first and second Laws of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) and Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) and that course-and-distance contest has always been a stepping stone to this. The winner’s trainer Ken Condon has a smart collection of juveniles in 2020 and said, “All has been fine with him and we’re looking forward to it. He’ll have to improve and step forward again, but he’s been good since and he’s well entitled to take his chance. He took a big step forward from his first to his second run and then from his second to his third, and has pleased us since.” According to jockey bookings, the one to head the trio bidding to give the current Ballydoyle set-up a 17th renewal is St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), the half-brother to Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) who was second on his sole start over this track and trip on July 26.

Elsewhere on the Curragh card, the story of the G3 Rathasker Stud Phoenix Sprint S. is whether the June 28 G2 Greenlands S. and July 5 G3 Ballycorus S. winner Speak In Colours (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) can give nine pounds to last year’s G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Millisle (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), now that she has served notice that she is back to her best when winning by four lengths in Naas’s G3 Ballyogan S. over this six-furlong trip on July 22. At Salisbury, Shadwell’s June 16 Buckingham Palace H. and July 11 Bunbury Cup winner Motakhayyel (GB) (Heeraat {Ire}) steps into pattern company in the G3 AJN Steelstock Sovereign S., where he meets some established performers headed by the July 28 G2 Lennox S. runner-up Duke of Hazzard (Fr) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).

Goffs UK Unveils Premier Sale Catalogue

Goffs UK has released the catalogue for its Doncaster Premier Sale, with 423 yearlings set to go under the hammer on Sept. 1 and 2. The sale has already enjoyed a fruitful 2020, with Golden Horde (GB) (Lethal Force {Ire}) following on from fellow sale graduate Advertise (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) in winning the G1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot and The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) making it back-to-back wins for the sale in the G2 Norfolk S., with A’Ali (Ire) (Society Rock {Ire}) having taken that prize in 2019. Graduate Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) has won two Group 1s this year, while group-winning juveniles Supremacy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), Cairn Gorm (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}) and Ventura Tormenta (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) were also sourced at the sale.

The latter’s half-brother by Starspangledbanner (Aus) (lot 313) is among this year’s offerings at the Premier Sale. Other highlights on paper include a colt by Invincible Spirit (Ire) out of G3 Firth of Clyde S. victress Distinctive (GB) (Tobougg {GB}) (lot 173) and a filly by the same sire out of G1 Nassau S. winner Favourable Terms (GB) (Selkirk) (lot 206); a No Nay Never filly out of a half-sister to Equiano (Fr) (lot 195); a Cotai Glory (GB) half-sister to A’Ali (lot 322); and a full-brother to G3 Hackwood S. winner Yafta (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) (lot 423). Haras d’Etreham and La Motteraye Consignment offer a Lope De Vega (Ire) colt out of G3 Round Tower S. winner Royal Empress (Ire) (lot 380) as well as colts by Etreham sires Wootton Bassett (GB) (lot 338) and Almanzor (Fr) (lot 31). Barton Stud offers a filly by leading French sire Siyouni (Fr) (lot 361) out of a half-sister to GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Queen’s Trust (GB) (Dansili {GB}).

“It has been a very strong year for the Premier Sale on the track and once again it has proved its ability to produce horses of the highest calibre with A’Ali and particularly Golden Horde,” said Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent. “Both elite 2-year-olds last year, they have progressed in their 3-year-old season to hold strong stallion credentials and look set to follow other top graduates such as Advertise and Harry Angel who have recently secured their place at leading studs in the same way as the likes of Acclamation, Dark Angel, Wootton Bassett etc. Seeing these results is very exciting for the sale and the host of top 2-year-olds we have this year, headlined by the likes of Cairn Gorm, Method, Supremacy, The Lir Jet and Ventura Tormenta certainly puts it in a strong position for the latter half of the season and their Classic season next year.

“We have some outstanding yearlings catalogued this year, including siblings to some of our star performers, and we have plenty to look forward to over the coming weeks with a number of graduates lining up in Group 1 races. We will be busy in the build-up marketing this catalogue to our ever-growing global audience and we look forward to welcoming everyone to Doncaster on Sept. 1 and 2, where we will be strictly following the updated protocols to ensure that we comply with the UK Government’s latest COVID guidelines.”

Darley July Cup: Jockey Kevin Stott Hoping To Continue Dream 2020 Season With Hello Youmzain

A talented field of 13 will head to post for the Darley July Cup at Newmarket's July meeting this Saturday.

The field consists of multiple big-race winners and none more so than the winner of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, Hello Youmzain. The four-year-old was giving jockey Kevin Stott his first Royal Ascot win as well as first Group 1 win and the pair will be well fancied again this Saturday.

Stott is hoping to continue his whirlwind start to the season; the 25-year-old had undoubtedly the biggest day of his career on the Saturday of this year's Royal meeting. He won the Diamond Jubilee Stakes with Hello Youmzain for his first Group 1 and immediately followed it up with a winner in the next race with Hey Jonesey – his first Royal Ascot winners.

The North Yorkshire-based jockey revealed the pure emotion he felt that day and that Kevin Ryan's stable star, Hello Youmzain, has come out of the race well and is ready to go on Saturday, in a race that forms part of the 2020 QIPCO British Champions Series.

“As we crossed the line it was the best feeling in the world. It's something that I've dreamt about since I was a kid,” Stott said.

“It was very emotional for me being my first Group 1. It didn't sink in straight away, I was very overwhelmed with it being my first Group 1 and my first Royal Ascot winner. It didn't sink in until I was sat at home in bed the next morning watching the replay.

“Hello Youmzain has come out of the race brilliantly, his preparation for the July Cup on Saturday has been very good. He's been fresh and well so I'm very happy with him.

“He's a very big horse, he was a late two-year-old. He's extremely balanced and very fast out of the stalls. If I could describe him in one word it would be that he's athletic. He's an absolute pleasure to ride.”

Stott is 12th in this year's Flat Jockeys' Championship with 21 wins from 117 rides at a strike rate of 18%.

The winner of the other six-furlong sprint at the Royal meeting, Golden Horde will also head to post after his commanding victory in the Commonwealth Cup. Clive Cox and Adam Kirby know all about teaming up with sprinters in this race having won it twice before with Lethal Force and Harry Angel.

The past three runnings of the Darley July Cup have been won by 3-year-olds and last year the Classic generation were responsible for the first five home – a good omen for Clive Cox's sprinter.

Last year's champion apprentice Cieren Fallon Jr. is hoping Oxted can provide him with a dream first Group 1 triumph by landing the Darley July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday. Fallon Jr. is still able to claim 3lb in the majority of races but the status of the showpiece sprint, which forms part of the 35-race QIPCO British Champions Series, means he has to compete on level terms.

Fallon Jr. guided Oxted to victory in the William Hill Portland Handicap at Doncaster in September and was also on board him when he won the Group 3 Betway Abernant Stakes on his return at Newmarket last month.

Fallon Jr. believes the absence of any spectators will be a bonus for the horse: “He has his quirks and we have the hood on him in the parade ring. The crowd not being there is a big help to him as he can get a little worked up beforehand.”

Hello Youmzain's win in the Diamond Jubilee could prove to be a good form guide as three of the first four home all re-oppose each other here.

Irish sprint sensation, Sceptical was third in the Royal Ascot Group 1 and will be looking to overturn that result this time out. Trained by Denis Hogan in Ireland, Sceptical changed hands for just 2,800gns last year as an unraced three-year-old and has already proved a lucrative purchase. He will again be ridden by Frankie Dettori, still searching for an elusive first win in the July Cup.

Fourth place in the Diamond Jubilee went to Khadeem and he will also be looking to reverse that form for trainer, Charlie Hills.

Brando, the 2017 Prix Maurice De Gheest winner, will be running in his fourth July Cup for Kevin Ryan. He beat all bar U S Navy Flag in the 2018 renewal and chased home Judicial at Newcastle last time out.

Threat scooped two Group 2 prizes as a juvenile last year – including when beating Lord Of The Lodge in the Al Basti equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes at York – and drops back in distance after finishing fifth on his return over a. mile in the St James's Palace Stakes. Conversely, Equilateral moves up in distance after chasing home Battaash, his brilliant stablemate, in the King's Stand Stakes.

German-trained challenger Namos, winner of two pattern races in his native country this year, adds international flavour, while Sir Dancealot gets the opportunity to try and improve on the fourth place he managed in the 2018 July Cup.

Shine So Bright ounds out the field of 13 and will be looking to return to some sort of form after a disappointing run in the Diamond Jubilee where he could only manage tenth.

Guineas Sale Heads Tattersalls’ July Action

NEWMARKET, UK—This week would normally be one of Newmarket’s finest. Top-class racing, the Tattersalls July Sale, stallion parades and parties.

As Britain reawakes from lockdown, the business end of the bloodstock world has managed to operate almost normally and racing has been back in action since early June behind closed doors, meaning that we have a July Week of sorts, albeit one without all the fun.

The rearranged breeze-up sales have just two fixtures left, Wednesday’s belated Guineas Sale at Tattersalls which leads straight into two days of a reduced July Sale, and the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Sale on July 24.

It’s been a long haul for the majority of the breeze-up consignors who left Ireland almost three weeks ago and have been on the move between sales in Newmarket and Doncaster since then. Generally, the breeze-up market has held up better than most dared to dream, and, naturally, the hope is for that trend will continue on Wednesday when trade gets underway for the single session at Park Paddocks.

After withdrawals, around 120 2-year-olds will be offered including a full-sister to the G2 Lancashire Oaks winner Lady Tiana (GB) and listed-winning stayer Blakeney Point (GB), both of whom are by Sir Percy (GB). The filly is offered as lot 25 through Tally-Ho Stud and is fairly typical of the profile of horse usually found in the Guineas Sale, which tends to include a later-maturing type. Indeed, the sale’s most famous graduate is the Gold Cup winner Trip To Paris (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}), who was sold by Mocklershill to Federico Barberini for 20,000gns back in 2013. A durable and talented individual who raced until the age of six, earning more than £800,000 during his career, he was however out and winning as early as July of his juvenile season.

The Sherbourne Lodge Stud draft contains a French-bred colt (lot 148) by this season’s leading freshman sire Goken (Fr) who already has ten winners to his name including the G3 Prix du Bois winner Livachope (Fr), while Robson Aguiar, the man behind the G2 Norfolk S. winner The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}) has a colt from the first crop of dual Derby winner Harzand (Ire) (lot 40) whose dam is a Dutch Art (GB) half-sister to recent G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde (Ire) (Lethal Force {Ire}).

On Thursday and Friday the action switches to the mixed fare of the July Sale and it was from here that Golden Horde’s dam Entreat (GB) was sold by Cheveley Park Stud four years ago for just 14,000gns. The dams of fellow Group 1 winners Fairyland (Ire), Ten Sovereigns (Ire) and Watch Me (Fr) have also been sourced from this sale in recent years and breeders are likely to make a beeline for sizeable drafts from Cheveley Park Stud, Godolphin and Juddmonte among others.

Barton Stud consigns the French mare Damdam Freeze (Fr) (Indian Rocket {GB}), who has already produced the stakes winner Kendam (Fr) and Kenfreeze (Fr), both by Kendargent (Fr), and the family has received a further boost this season via Kendam’s son Kenway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}), the winner of the G3 Prix Eclipse. The 15-year-old Damdam Freeze is in foal to Showcasing on a June 3 cover and is offered as lot 373.

The dam of one of the toughest horses currently in training, Prince Of Arran (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}), is also included in Thursday’s session and she is the 14-year-old Storming Sioux (GB), a daughter of Storming Home (GB). Selling through Jamie Railton as lot 229, she is carrying a foal by Elwick Stud’s Mondialiste (Ire) and was last covered on May 18.

Wednesday’s session for the Guineas Sale begins at 12 noon and for Thursday and Friday the July Sale will start at 10am. Live internet bidding is available via the Tattersalls website and prospective buyers are asked to register for this service in advance of the sale.
